TGM1 Section 1 General Information Section 1 General Information Introduction This manual contains instructions for the MSA TGM1 Series. Description: The TGM1 Series is a microprocessor-based monitoring system designed to interface with a wide range of MSA Sensors. One (1) Sensor can be connected to the TGM1. The system comes complete with audible and visual status indication, relay outputs and adjustable warning and alarm levels, complete with reset. The alarm relay is selectable for non-latching or latching with H1-9. Standard factory configuration is the non-latching mode. Sensor Failure Condition: The TGM1 Monitor has Sensor OK LED. If the remote sensor fails, the Sensor OK LED (Green) goes out and the sensor fail relay is activated. The sensor fail relay is non-latching. LED Indicators & Relays & Audible Alarm Warning Condition: When the gas concentration exceeds the warning setpoint, the AMBER warning LED turns on and the warning relay is activated. The warning relay is non-latching. When the Warning conditions disperse below the setpoint, the relay will re-set. Alarm Condition: When the gas concentration exceeds the alarm setpoint, the RED Alarm LED turns on, the alarm relay is activated and the audible alarm sounds. 1-1

TGM1 Section 2 Operating Specifications OR Field adjustable delays for 0 to 10 minutes. Audible Alarm: Solid ON-Standard Factory Setting ( ft.) OR Variable Sound Pulse Calibration: Remote Sensors: One (1) remote sensor can be connected to the TGM1. The Sensor may be a 4-20 ma analog signal type or an RS-485 serial communications type. The RS-485 type sensor may be any gas type and range. The TGM1 will automatically interpret the sensor operating range. Use shielded cable for wiring installation. Signal wiring must not be installed in the same conduit with power or relay wiring. Refer to sensor wiring diagram (page 5-5, 5-6 or 5-7) and sensor instruction manual for more details. All units are tested and pre-calibrated at the factory. Enclosure: Standard - Metal NEMA 1 Optional - Fiberglass NEMA 4 Dimensions: Height: 11.5 (292 mm) Width: 10.0 (254 mm) Depth: 3.75 (95 mm) External Connections Perform all wiring and conduit installation in accordance to the Canadian Electrical Code or the National Electrical Code or to local electrical requirements. Use separate conduits for power wires, relay wires and signal wires. WHEN CONNECTING THE REMOTE SEN- SORS, MAKE SURE THAT ALL WIRING IS CORRECT AND THE FOUR LEADS OF THE RS-485 BUS ARE NOT INTERCHANGED, OR PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE SEN- SOR MAY RESULT. NOTE MAKE SURE THAT THE SENSOR IS GIVEN ADDRESS 1 ON ITS ADDRESS JUMPERS, OR THE TGM1 WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE TO IT. (FOR RS-485 ONLY) 2-2

TGM1 Section 2 External Connections Signal Output (optional): The 4-20 ma analog signal represents the gas concentration level within the designated dynamic range. Relays: When jumper H1-3 is OUT, all relays are normally de-energized when inactive, and energized when activated. When jumper H1-3 is IN, all relays are normally energized when inactive and de-energized when activated. This provides fail-safe operation of the TGM1. Each relay has an LED associated with it that shows if the relay is energized. The fuse at the input is a 150 ma SloBlo type fuse (BUSSMAN MDL 15/100 or equivalent). REPLACE FUSE ONLY WITH ONE OF SAME RATING AND TYPE NOTE DO NOT USE MONITOR POWER WHEN CONNECTING ANY EXTERNAL DEVICES TO THE RELAY CONTACTS. USE A SEPARATE POWER SOURCE. DO NOT EXCEED THE CONTACT RATINGS MARKED ON THE RELAYS. Power: Connect power supply (110 Vac 50/60 Hz) to terminal strip G, N and L. (Refer to page 5-7). Follow the applicable electrical code requirements when installing and wiring the unit. The power wiring must be separated from the signal wiring and relay wiring; use different conduit run for power, signal and relay wiring. 2-3

TGM1 Section 2 Setup & Calibration Setup & Calibration Warning & Alarm Setpoints: There are two methods for setting the warning and alarm setpoints. The first uses pre-programmed, fixed setpoints of 35% for warning and 50% for alarm. The second allows for adjusting the setpoints anywhere from 0% to 100% Full Scale (FS) via two potentiometers (labelled: WARNING, ALARM). To select the fixed setpoints, jumpers H1-7 (warning) and/or H1-8 (alarm) must be removed. To select the adjustable setpoint, jumpers H1-7 (warning) and H1-8 (alarm) must be inserted. Inserting a jumper activates the associated potentiometer and test point (TP1 for warning and TP2 for alarm). The test points show a voltage of 0-5 Vdc for a setpoint of 0-100% Full Scale. Using a voltmeter from the test points to TPCOM, the setpoint can be adjusted using the following equation. Warning & Alarm Delays: There are two methods for setting the warning and alarm delays. The first uses preprogrammed, fixed delays of 5 minutes OFF delay for warning and 5 minutes ON delay for alarm. The second allows for adjusting the delays anywhere from 0 to 10 minutes via two potentiometers (labelled: WARNING DELAY, ALARM DELAY). To select the fixed delays, jumper H1-5 must be inserted. To select the adjustable delays, jumper H1-5 must be removed. Removing the jumper activates the associated potentiometers and test points (TP3 for warning delay and TP4 for alarm delay). The testpoints show a voltage of 0-5 Vdc for a delay of 0-10 minutes. Using a voltmeter from the testpoints to TPCOM, the delay can be adjusted using the following equation: TP = Setpoint % x 5 Vdc 100% Example: TP = Example: Delay (min.) x 5 Vdc 10 To set up a warning setpoint of 40% and an alarm setpoint of 60%, TP1 should read: 40 x 5 = 2.0 Vdc 100 and TP2 should read: 60 x 5 = 3.0 Vdc 100 To set up a warning delay of 4 minutes and an alarm delay of 6 minutes, TP3 should read: 4 x 5 = 2.0 Vdc 10 and TP4 should read: 6 x 5 = 3.0 Vdc

TGM1 Section 2 Setup & Calibration Alarm Latch: Normally, all relays return to their inactive state once their condition has cleared. The alarm relay can be made to latch in the activated position even after the alarm has cleared. By inserting jumper H1-9, the alarm relay will remain latched after the alarm clears until the reset button is pressed. NOTE Pressing the reset button during the alarm condition does not affect the latching. The reset button must be pressed after the alarm condition has cleared in order to deactivate the alarm relay. Display Mode: The display of the TGM1 is auto-ranging for all RS-485 type serial sensors. The display mode jumpers have no effect for an RS-485 type sensor. The display mode jumpers take effect only if a 4-20 ma analog sensor is installed. Then the incoming analog signal is scaled to the full scale setting of the display mode jumpers. There are two sets of display ranges available: Range A and Range B. Jumper H1-4 selects which display range is active. If jumper H1-4 is OUT, Range A is selected; if jumper H1-4 is IN, Range B is selected. The following table shows the various jumper positions for the different display modes; Range A: Range B: Full Scale H2-2 H out out 200 out in 75 in out 50 in in Audible Alarm Device: The TGM1 has two audible alarm modes. The first is a solid-on mode that sounds the audible alarm continuously while the TGM1 is in an alarm state. The second is a variable- ON mode that sounds the audible alarm in an eight second interval pulsed fashion. The time between pulses is fixed, but the on-time of the audible alarm is determined by the amount that the alarming sensor is exceeding the alarm setpoint. For example, if the setpoint is at 50% and an alarm comes in at 55%, the audible alarm would give short beeps every eight seconds. As the alarm level increases from 55% to 100%, the beeps become longer in duration until a solid tone appears at 100%. To select the solid-on audible alarm mode, jumper H1-6 must be inserted. To select the variable-on audible alarm mode, jumper H1-6 must be removed. In both modes, pressing the reset button will silence the audible alarm, but will not have any effect on the alarm LED on the front panel or the alarm relay. Full Scale H2-2 H out out 250 out in 100 in out 10.0 in in 2-5

TGM1 Section 2 Setup & Calibration Analog Output Adjustment: (Optional) The analog output (4-20 ma) is factory calibrated and should not require adjustment. It does not drift because it is digitally controlled by the micro-processor. If adjustments are required, a ZERO and SPAN potentiometer can be used to perform these. To adjust the output to 4-20 ma for 0-100% input (factory setting) apply a 0% (4 ma) signal to the input and adjust the ZERO potentiometer until the output reads 4 ma. Then apply a 100% (20 ma) signal to the input and adjust the SPAN potentiometer until the output reads 20 ma. If using RS-485 type sensors, a 0% and 100% input can be obtained by making sure the sensor is not exposed to any gas, or ideally by disconnecting the sensor (the Sensor Fail will then activate - ignore it) for a 0% signal and by inserting the 100% jumper on the back of the sensor board for a 100% signal. 2-6

TGM1 Section 3 General Operation Section 3 General Operation Auto-Ranging: The TGM1 automatically detects the type of sensor connected on an RS-485 bus and determines its full scale value. All setpoints and the display are adjusted accordingly to match the various sensors full scale levels. If an analog sensor is connected, the display must be manually adjusted for the appropriate sensor scale using the display mode jumpers (see Setup and Calibration). Sensor Failure: If the TGM1 loses communications with the RS-485 sensor, or if the sensor fails, the sensor OK LED will turn off and the sensor fail relay will activate. If an analog sensor is used and the impulse is less than 3 ma, the sensor OK LED will turn off and the sensor fail relay will activate. Warning and Alarm: If the level of the sensor exceeds the warning setpoint, the warning LED will turn on and the warning relay will activate. No alarm is sounded. If the sensor input drops below the warning setpoint, the warning LED will turn off and after a delay defined by jumper H1-5 (and the potentiometer), the relay will return to its inactive state. If the level of the sensor exceeds the alarm setpoint, the alarm LED will turn on and after a delay defined by jumper H1-5 (and the potentiometer), the relay will activate. At the same time the relay activates, the audible alarm is sounded. The audible alarm may be silenced by pressing the reset button. If the sensor drops below the alarm setpoint, the alarm LED will turn off, the alarm will silence (if not silenced already by reset button) and the alarm relay will deactivate if jumper H1-9 is not inserted. If jumper H1-9 is inserted, then the alarm relay will not deactivate automatically once the sensor drops below the alarm setpoint. The relay will only deactivate once the reset button is pressed. 3-1
