Standards weigh in the risk of new demands on end users and manufacturers against the need for an ever safer workplace. In this presentation, Shankar will supply an overview of the ISA standards development process and describe some of the salient changes to combustible and toxic performance standards for point and open path instruments. Shankar Baliga is Manager, Research & Development, at General Monitors in Lake Forest, CA. He is responsible for the development of new optical, acoustic, and chemical sensing technologies for gas and flame detection. Recent examples of his research interests include flame detection with neural networks and open path gas detection for ppm levels. He is a Senior Member of SPIE, IEEE and ISA and a voting member on the ISA and ISA-92 committees for combustible and toxic gas detectors respectively. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Ohio State University. The first 15 minutes are delegated to opening remarks and an opportunity for the meeting sponsors to give a few minutes talk on their products/services. The allotted time for the speakers is 45 minutes. Attached for your reference, please find our meeting guidelines. JPL has been making quite a few headlines since its engineers successfully landed the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity rover on the Red Planet on Aug. 5. The ISA tour included a stop at a life-size model of Curiosity, where the ISA visitors had the opportunity to ask questions about the mission. In addition, there was a stop in mission control, officially known as the Space Flight Operations Facility, where engineers talk to Curiosity and a whole fleet of NASA spacecraft that are currently studying our solar system and the cosmos During the JPL tour, ISALA members gathered around a life-size model of Mars Curiosity, the rover that landed on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 and is currently beaming back images and data. Photo from Jane Platt. beyond. The building has been designated a National Historic Landmark and made for an excellent photo opportunity for the tour participants. A stop in the von Karman Museum and Auditorium included a brief documentary about JPL s exploration of space, and a chance to get up close and personal with models of such spacecraft as Voyager. 6 ISA Las Vegas Section The 2012 Fall Classic By Jeff Blue The 2012 Fall Classis started off with a golf tournament at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The weather was not cooperating at all that day and we had to cut the tournament short. The staff at Stallion Mountain did work to provide the best service possible under the poor weather conditions. We completed the weather shortened round at about 10:45. At about noon we headed to the Boulder Station Hotel and Casino for a lunch buffet and awards presentations in the second floor conference area. Photos courtesy of Jeff Blue The First place team, shot a 6 under for the round, from Ultimate Alarm Company and comprised of Angel Yumart, Jim Lemar, Vic Hickly, and Marty Huerta. The Second Place team that shot a 5 under for the round was from Cortech Engineering and was comprised of Denny McCollum, Sean Patterson, Ray Gallegos, and Jim Zidow. The Third place team shot a 4 under par was from EMA and comprised of Cal Rooker, Dave Johnson, Larry McKenzie, and Todd Pickle. Congratulations for you efforts and hopefully we can get a full round in next year. There was one other notable team, and they were recognized for their golf style and course performance. They were from Emerson Reliability Services and Convergent Systems. The team of, Steve Bisaha, Pam Bisaha, Kevin Cunningham, and Ray Wooge were presented the MAXIMUM COURSE USE award. (You can only guess why the won that award.) This year we had two Longest-Drive holes. The #13 hole, Longest-Drive sponsored by Generant, was won by Brian Shafer. 7 #6 hole, Longest-Drive sponsored by Rockwell Automation, was won by B. Shafer. We had two Closest-to-The-Pin holes as well this year. Closest-to-The-Pin hole #11, was sponsored by Keller Electrical Industries and it was won by Bob Blackman. Closest-to-The-Pin Hole #3 was sponsored by Control Solutions and was won by Jim Murray. Thanks again to Stan Spence for volunteering to help at the golf registration this year. A special thanks goes out to Dave Raper along with the whole Stallion Mountain Golf Course staff for their efforts in pulling the tournament together. We raffled off two drivers, two putters, and one wedge. I believe a special thanks to Dave Raper from Stallion Mountain for donating the more that generous amount f golf passes for our event. Also, I would like to thank Steve Appleton, from the Las Vegas Golf and Tennis Green Valley Store, who deserves a special note for supporting our event with the goodie bags and the donation of a Cleveland Golf 54 degree wedge. Also, Troy Gentry from GMI donated a couple of clubs and golf balls in support of the event. After the golf trophies and raffles were handed out we opened the show. We had all the tables sold this year plus two technical presentations scheduled for the afternoon. We had 60 guest names on the register this year and over 20 product representatives in attendance. We re getting better! We usually have two technical presentations, but due to circumstances beyond our control we only had one this year. The early presentation was Large System Remote Site Surveillance-Techniques and Sensors by Kevin Hillmon, Electrical Engineer from Las Vega Valley Water District. The slot was from 2:15 P.M. until 3:15 P.M. Kevin discussed the Elements of a Protection System, including a Vulnerability Assessment. The discussion also covered Emergency Response, Security Systems - Descriptions, Pros & Cons and Local Networking. The later presentation was cancelled because the speaker moved to Texas with short notice and we were not able to find a replacement. After the presentation was made, professional development hour certificates were issued to the attendees, it was time for the Happy Hour portion of the Continued on page 11 The Interface Solution Experts When you need to interface field processes with computer-based systems, readout equipment and other instrumentation... our technology, service and expertise help you do it efficiently, safely and cost-effectively. ISALA tours Mars rover model and mission control at JPL, continued from page 5 Voyager mission includes two spacecraft that are currently at the edge of our solar system, on their way to interstellar space. The group donned 3-D glasses for a brief movie about the NASA missions that observe our home planet, Earth, and via another movie, they learned about the history of JPL and its role in kicking of America s space program in the 1950s. Since JPL is nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, the tours included unplannedopportunities to see some of the deer that frequently visit the campus-like facility. While the autumn sun shone brightly on the Oct. 10 tour, Mother Nature put on quite a show for the Oct. 11 tour attendees, when a dramatic storm rolled through the area, bringing heavy rain and thunder. Rain or shine, the tours provided a memorable experience. Plans are underway for more tours to JPL.
