Fixed High Volume Water Spray System We believe the key to understanding fire suppression is not only understanding the machinery, but understanding how it will be used and in what environment it is going to be operating in. Almost all cases of static installations are different. This could be because of building design, layout design of the plant, throughput and the material that is being processed. Fireward uses third party certified technology to detect and suppress difficult fires in extreme environments. We have consulted manufacturers, dealers, technicians and end users as to the causes and locations of previous fires and their associated ignition sources. This valuable information has helped us in the development of our static high volume water system. This information is important as the majority of small fires which cause little or no damage are not reported. However, we have forged working relationships with its customers in the waste management industry to gain this knowledge, thus giving our customers the benefit of continual improvement. We are here to protect our customers. 3

What s the risk? For example when we are asked to protected a static shredder we consider the following to be the main risks that are possible sources of fuel and ignition. Side Cabinets Hopper At either side of a shredder there are often voids which separate the shredding chamber from important machine parts such as motors, bearings, drive belts and hydraulic components. These voids are often a magnet for fine dust created by shredded materials. This fine dust, if not cleaned continually, works its way through into hidden and concealed areas and whilst doing so, is exposed to sources of high friction, heat from motors, bearings and other sources of heat and ignition. It is not uncommon for this material to begin to combust and ignite surroundings. We have seen a number of fires start inside these voids, often growing rapidly. An additional risk is embers making their way into ventilation systems often used with these machines. The hopper is the point at which material is channelled into the shredding chamber. Depending on the design of the shredder in-feed and the material being processed, it is possible - and in many cases, not uncommon - for material to be ejected back through the hopper area. Additionally large quantities of dust and other fibres are present in the hopper area, making it difficult to suppress fire with limited suppression agents such as stored pressure. Our system is designed to detect sparks and flames in the hopper area. This will activate our system, discharging around 70 litres per minute into the hopper. Surround Even with the high standards of plant design, excess material spillage buildup, on and around the machine is still commonplace. Within hours there is often a large amount of fire supporting material in various places around these machines, especially near service doors. Although rare for a fire to start on the surrounds of a machine, smaller fires from hoppers and internal areas can quickly spread to these areas and having done so, produce a very large fire that is often beyond the capabilities of anybody other than the emergency services. Suppression in this area is achieved by high volume delivery nozzles that are placed around the machine. They produce a curtain of water that deluge the built up material, the outsides of the machine and surrounding areas, making it difficult for fire to spread. Discharge Belt Shredding Chamber The shredding chamber is the point at which the state of the material is changed. The forces involved causes material to heat up due to the friction involved within the chamber and cutting faces, with the material that is fed to the high speed shredder varying from installation to installation. The key to reducing the fire risk is to supply the shredder with material that is free from contaminants, such as inert material, metals and highly flammable material. Ignition is often caused by one of the above materials producing a spark. High speed shredding produces a fine dust that is very fine particles of waste grouped together by static electricity. When shown a spark, they ignite extremely easily. Once ignited, a fire from this part of the machine will often spread to the hopper and discharge belts. We protect the shredding chamber by discharging high volumes of water at over 70 litres per minute into the hopper of the machine. This eliminates fire quickly and cools the internals of the shredder. With the right selection of nozzles and pump, we achieve high volumes with a very small droplet size of just 800 microns. This helps suffocate fires. It also increases the surface area of the water to aid cooling. Volume and droplet size are the key to an effective solution in tackling these types of fire. If a fire starts in the shredding chamber, the burning material will drop onto the discharge belt and is carried away further into the site process or to a stockpile. This is a key part of our system. We have fast and accurate flame detection in this area. Past this point there is often further processing, such as baling and wrapping or more dangerously, stockpiles. Beneath The Machine We are able to monitor closely the waste passing our infrared cameras. Once our predetermined threshold is met, our system will activate nozzles placed along the belt, cooling and suppressing fire before it reaches other critical parts of the plant. Our systems work on high speed moving conveyors. Depending on each installation, we will position nozzles and nozzle types to ensure that entire coverage of the waste is achieved. This means that deep seated fires are still suppressed effectively. Often a very difficult area to detect and suppress fire, we use our trace detection tubing along with flame detection cameras. This allows fast detection in areas often unnoticed by employees. A place where fires often start out of hours, this occurs after machine shutdown resulting in smouldering. Our system will be monitoring these areas 24/7. Even without manual intervention, our system will activate, flooding the area with water and stopping fire spreading, while quickly alerting operators to the detection. 4 5

Protecting Your People And Assets From Fire Fire Suppression Early Detection Introduction To Fireward Systems Our fixed fire suppression is a system designed for static plant and MRFs. It uses some of the highest quality components in the industry, ensuring that you get 24/7 protection. Please continue reading for an in depth summary of our static system. We don t believe sprinkler systems are the answer for our customers. A large amount of damage has already occurred before a typical sprinkler system will activate. This will often lead to lengthy downtime and large insurance claims. Our systems detect and suppress the fire while it s small, not to mention that our system costs a fraction of the price of an ineffective sprinkler system. No recharge costs after an activation ensures that the system can be used as often as required, without the worry of large refill costs. The System Is Broken Down Into 3 Active Parts 1. Fire detection - Flame Detectors, Linear Cable, Trace Detection and Manual Activation These detectors will be positioned at predetermined points around your equipment to provide the earliest possible fire detection without nuisance of false alarm. They provide 24/7 detection even during a power cut. 2. Monitoring And Control - Fire Panel System The fire panel systems consists of one main fire panel with remote status panels. The panel can be integrated into most other fire systems and Red Care monitoring systems. A wide range of shutdown options are also available to provide the safe shutdown of most machinery. Includes battery backup for 24/7 detection. 3. Suppression - High Volume Water System Our pump and tank manufacturer are experts in the design and supply of water systems globally, from multimillion pound sprinkler systems to portable and fixed water distribution on a city scale. Detection Components & Equipment Ember Detectors Ember detectors respond to energy in the infrared spectrum of wavelength 10 to 50μm and do not react to visible light. The detector has spectral response of microns. It will report an ember within 80 milliseconds once in the field of view. It can detect a 1 inch square ember at a distance of 3.25ft (1 m) on a belt moving at 6 m/s. Direct Mount The 120 spark is a high speed, ultra-sensitive optical radiant energy detector, designed to detect small sparks or particles of burning or smoldering material being processed in transportation Systems. They have a sensitivity of 100 Nanowatts and respond in less than 1 millisecond. Flame Detection Camera Our FM Approved 20/20M Flame Detection Cameras are high performance, unique IR3 and UV/IR flame detectors. The mini detectors are highly resistant to harsh environments, immune to false alarms and are designed for use in outdoor or indoor applications. They provide an excellent solution to protect open areas such as machine hoppers or shredding chambers. NOZZLE MAIN CONTROL BREAKER FLAME DETECTOR FIRE PANEL WATER PUMP & TANK 6 7

Fire Suppression You Can Rely On Stopping Fires Where They Start Linear Heat Detection Cable Fire Panel There are many scenarios where conventional detection methods - smoke, heat or flame - are not suitable, are inappropriate or can even be more expensive compared with Linear Heat Detection Cable, or Trace Detection Tube. Environmental conditions, including dusty or dirty areas, areas with exhaust fumes, areas with high humidity, areas subjected to high vibration or areas outside the temperature parameters of traditional detectors, may mean that conventional detection methods only work to a limited degree - or even not at all. The protection area may also have physical restrictions in terms of access during or after installation, so a flexible and maintenance-free sensor is desirable. Linear Heat Detection Cables use two twisted and tensioned tin plated, copper coated, steel conductors. Each conductor is then extruded with a temperature sensitive polymer, before the application of an outer sheath of flame retardant high temperature material. For certain applications a corrosion and abrasion resistant extrusion or grade 316 stainless steel braid may be provided. The design of Linear Heat Detection Cable is extremely robust. Detecting a fire in its early stages means that it can be dealt with efficiently and effectively, leading to less downtime and damage to the asset or environment Reacton Detection Tube The tubing is manufactured from specially processed polymer materials to achieve the desired heat detection and delivery characteristics. Fireward s fire panels are designed and manufactured to the highest standards and are kite marked with all relevant EN approvals. The Fireward monitoring and control panel ensures that your system is constantly monitored for fire and fault, 24/7. With up to eight detection zones divided into 4 extinguishment areas, including manual extinguishment release, it is a highly scalable fire control panel. It can be configured to activate the water system from any combination of detection inputs. The extensive configuration options of the Fireward panel allow us to provide unparalleled fault monitoring of our entire system. Approved to EN , EN54-2 and EN54-4 2, 4 or 8 detection zones 1 to 4 extinguishant areas Dual extinguishant outputs for each area (configurable as main/ reserve) First and second stage sounder outputs for each area First and second stage volt free changeover contacts for each area Released volt free contact per area Fault volt-free contact per area Programmable extinguishant delays Programmable output duration Extract fan control Countdown indicator shows time until release in seconds Mode select and manual release controls per area Monitored remote manual release input Monitored remote hold input Monitored remote mode select (door interlock) input Monitored remote released pressure switch input Monitored remote low pressure switch input Monitored abort input Trace detection tubes should be considered as a linear heat/flame detector. When the temperature is increased to above 120 C, or the automatic detection tube is touched by a flame, the tube bursts and initiates the diffusion of the extinguishing medium either directly or through pressure switches. Trace Detection Tubes do not need any external energy/power supply. The system is always operational, even during energy breakdown. The various methods of installation of the Trace Detection Tube allows adaptation to almost any object or fire risk that requires protection. Both types are very fast to install and integrate seamlessly into our control systems, which allows Linear Heat Cable and Trace Tube Detection add to an extra and powerful dimension to the protection of your business. Control Panel As part of our FM approved Spark and Ember extinguishing System, our remote status panel gives users who are not located at the main panel all the information they need to make an informed decision during a fire event. It also allows users to remotely activate the fire suppression from a distance if fire is seen or a condition that will lead to a fire is present. Additionally, remote panels housed in IP rated enclosures to protect against the harsh environment can be located near operators to allow them access to system status and remote activation. 8 9

Reduce Your Insurance Drastically Maximising Protection Minimising Cost Conventional Stored Pressure System Comparison Suppression System Conventional fire suppression systems using stored agents are limited by three important factors:- Fire pumps with monitoring capability for fault and fire condition signals can be provided to ensure that regular maintenance of the system is automatically supervised and interlocks and evacuation alarms can be tied into house alarm and BMS depending on the risk or process. The area which they can effectively cover Stored pressure systems are best suited to micro environments such as engine compartments, electrical cabinets or, in the case of a fixed shredder, side panels. The cost of protecting external parts, hopper and discharge parts become quickly cost prohibitive. This often means that hoppers, discharge belts, external surfaces and the waste, have little or no protection to prevent a fire growing larger and spreading. The water tank will be fed by mains pressure and continually topped up as required by the use of float valves. Discharge times and volumes deliverable Because of the low cost of water, it means that our suppression system is not limited by its stored volume. A typical conventional mobile system would use between litres of foam, the static suppression system comes with a minimum of 1000 litres. We typically discharge, depending on specification, between litres a minute per system. Dual pump arrangements can provide the fastest possible discharge times while each pump runs at 50% capacity. In the unlikely event of a pump failure, the second pump is still capable of delivering the required volumes and pressure. Re-charge costs Once a stored pressure system has been activated or discharged, the system needs refilling, recharging and re-commissioning. Nozzles Fireward High Volume Static Se nsor Se nsor Pumps are connected to a common manifold and extending from this, distribution pipework is routed along the belts and terminates in nozzles at predetermined distances. Each nozzle will deliver preset volumes of water per minute onto the risk, utilising different spray patterns to ensure maximum penetration of the waste and the best suppression performance. Nozzles at the ejection point of a bail splitter, ballistic separator and shredder will produce a flat blade of water to turn over the waste as it passes through the spray pattern. Nozzles positioned further along the belts will be produce a full cone of water for maximum saturation and fire knock down. On receipt of a fire signal from the fire panel, the pump control panel will start the system automatically. 10 This cost can be as much as 50%-70% of the original cost of the suppression, meaning ongoing high maintenance costs throughout the lifetime of the system. A fixed water-based suppression system can often be re-commissioned by someone onsite, and because it relies on water, it will automatically refill the tank after a discharge. In comparison a Fireward high volume static water system provides unparalleled detection in and around the machine, high delivery rates and volumes of water, ensuring not only is the fire suppressed directly, but the chance of the fire spreading is eliminated. The minimal service costs with no recharge costs and zero down time of the system following a discharge event makes the perfect solution for energy-to-waste plants LINEAR TRACE CABLE 11
