4 Electrical security systems Part 2-2: Access control systems: Central processor 1 Scope 1.1 This part of SANS 2220 specifies the characteristics of central processors for use as part of access control systems. 1.2 SANS specifies general characteristics of access control systems. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. 5 4 Requirements 4.1 General A central processor shall include the following components: a) a micro-processor; b) software; c) a computer terminal; d) a printer; and e) an enclosure. 4.2 Environmental requirements When a central processor is tested in accordance with 6.4, it shall continue to function as intended. 4.3 Functional requirements Processor hardware A central processor shall: a) have an MTBF (mean time between failures) (guaranteed by the supplier) of at least h, assessed in accordance with IEC and IEC (all relevant parts); Amdt 1 b) be of a modular design; c) contain a hard-disk drive or similar device with an MTBF (guaranteed by the supplier) of at least h under continuous operation; d) be capable of retrieving and reinstating data; e) contain random access memory circuits; f) contain a real-time clock circuit capable of maintaining and displaying real time (month, day, hour, minute and second); g) contain circuitry that provides an interface with the peripheral devices (such as readers and reader controllers) by means of standard communications protocol (handshaking protocol between central processor and reader controllers in both directions is recommended); and h) be so configured that the system completes the decision-making process at the controller or processor and has a transaction time (excluding biometric data evaluation) not exceeding 1 s Processor software General An access control application program shall: a) when tested in accordance with 6.5, cause the central processor to comply with the requirements of and 4.3.3; 4
