5 Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. 8 WORKING DRAFT ISO/WD Safety identification Escape and rescue plan signs 1 Scope This International Standard establishes design principles for displayed escape and rescue plans that contain information relevant to fire safety and evacuation escape for use by a facility's occupants and intervention forces in case of emergency. These plans are intended to be displayed as signs in public areas and workplaces. This International Standard is not intended to cover intervention plans to be used by external safety services nor detailed professional technical drawings for use by specialists. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. 9 3.3 escape route designated route beginning at the place where the user is and ending at a place of intended safety 3.4 escape plan detail layout of the escape and rescue plan based on floor plans 3.5 fire safety notice instructions for occupants to be followed in case of fire 3.6 intervention plan plan intended to facilitate the intervention by external safety services 3.7 overview plan simplified graphical representation used to relate the detailed escape plan to an overall facility or site 4 General Before applying the design principles, the fire safety management procedures shall have determined a number of key elements to be shown on the plan. The plan designed shall be a reflection of the study of the following key elements given in fire safety manuals and procedures: a) current, updated site plan with key features of the facility as verified by site visit; b) escape routes clearly identified and any secondary escape routes; c) evacuation plan including expected people movement and any instructions given and the way they are to be given; d) location of all fire fighting equipment and alarms; e) location of emergency equipment and evacuation aids; f) required actions to be taken in case of emergency or fire. The purpose of escape route plans is to give people a wider perspective of the facility's escape route layouts than the one they are located in. In this way, the escape route plan compliments the facility's emergency way guidance system (see ISO 16069). In principle, the escape route plan should illustrate the primary escape route from the user's position and at least one alternative escape route. 5 Design requirements The following requirements shall be met by any escape and rescue plan: a) The exact location of the user shall be indicated on the escape and rescue plan. b) Escape and rescue plans shall use colour. c) The minimum scale for the escape plan detail shall be 1:250. NOTE 1 It is recommended that, where possible, especially in the case of small to medium sized facilities, a larger scale should be used (e. g. 1:100, 1:150). 2 ISO 2006 All rights reserved

10 ((Table to be elaborated by Willem Heijboer, small/medium/large)) NOTE 2 Detailed elements such as stairs or corridors may be enlarged for conspicuity or to accommodate the placement of safety signs on the plan. d) In a set of facility plans all defined areas shall be illustrated consistently. e) The recognizability of escape and rescue plans can be achieved in case of a failure of the normal lighting by the use of phosphorescent material, luminated or illuminated. f) If escape and rescue plans are to be read under emergency lighting conditions, the plans shall be illuminated at a minimum of 5 lx by the emergency lighting. g) The background of an escape and rescue plan shall have the safety colour white or phosphorescent white as defined by ISO h) For escape and rescue plans, phosphorescent material shall be classified according to ISO i) Escape and rescue plans shall have standardized formats according to ISO 216. The minimum size is 300 mm x 420 mm. j) Escape and rescue plans shall be up-to-date. k) Escape and rescue plans shall be oriented so that the direction of escape is unambiguous from the viewers position. l) When safe condition and fire fighting equipment is indicated on the escape and rescue plan, they shall use safety signs consistent with their installed location in the facility. m) Escape and rescue plans shall have a legend. n) Escape and rescue plans shall have a standardized header, see Figure x, including the words "Escape plan" in the language(s) of the country in which the plan is used. ((proposals for Figure x to be provided by WG 1 members)) 6 Size of plan elements The following requirements shall be met: a) Information presented on escape and rescue plans shall be legible at the intended viewing distance. The minimum lettering height shall be 2 mm (8 points). NOTE It is suggested that the minimum viewing distance be 0,5 m, which under normal lighting conditions corresponds to a 2 mm lettering height. b) The header's minimum character height shall comply with the values given in Table 1 and shall be at least 7 % of the height of the plan(?) c) Safety signs shown on the plan shall have a minimum height of 7 mm. ((Remind: When legibility can be maintained a safety sign height of 5 mm may be used.)) d) If a circle is to be used to indicate the point of location of the user ("you are here"), it shall have a minimum diameter of 10 mm. e) The line width for the graphical representation of the facility's structural walls shall be at least 1,6 mm. Interior partition walls shall be represented by lines of a minimum width of 0,6 mm. If detailed elements are shown on the plan (e.g. stairs, shelves, windows), they shall be shown by lines of a minimum width of 0,15 mm. f) For all escape and rescue plans of a certain facility the same scale shall be used. 11 NOTE In the representation of long escape corridors, it is advisable that architectural features or equipment are shown to give the user a sense of scale/distance. Table 1 Lettering height for headers Intended viewing distance in m Character height in mm a ) 0, a ) based on the height of the capital letter X 7 Contents and representation 7.1 Header The header shall use the safety colours white and green as shown in Figure x. 7.2 Overview plan Except when a small facility's escape plan detail is itself an overview perspective of the facility, every escape plan shall incorporate an overview plan. An overview plan shall incorporate: a) the assembly point location(s); b) the overall facility/site plan with the specific section covered by the escape plan detail highlighted. ((Figures to be provided by Geoffrey Peckham/Willem Heijboer showing examples of highlighting)) The size of the overview plan shall never exceed 10 % of the escape plan. 7.3 Escape plan detail The escape plan detail shall incorporate: a) the floor plan of the relevant part of the facility that is modified to eliminate non-essential details highlight important elements increase legibility and ease of comprehension orient the plan to the position of the viewer selectively scale elements, e. g. enlarging the width of corridors and stairs, to be able to incorporate safety signs and graphical symbols b) all relevant exits and escape routes, horizontal and vertical c) the point of location of the user ("you are here") as illustrated in Figure x ((Figure x to be included showing blue dot and blue "triangulated" shape. 12 d) the location of stairs, if the facility has more than one floor e) any specific provisions made available for people with disabilities f) the location and type of the first intervention fire equipment and emergency and rescue equipment, e.g. fire alarms, fire extinguisher, fire hoses, first aid equipment g) the location of the lifts as an architectural feature and shall, when required, incorporate a prohibition sign to indicate that the lifts are not to be used 7.4 Safety notices Escape plans shall always be associated with fire and emergency safety notices which may be on the escape plan or displayed in close proximity to the escape plan. 7.5 Legend The legend shall appear on the escape plan and shall give the meaning of the safety signs, graphical symbols and colour coding used on the escape plan. Preferred formats of the legend are given in Annex x ((escape plan formats)). 7.6 Other information The following information shall be part of the plan: a) plan designer, b) name of the facility, c) floor designation, d) date of plan design and e) plan number. 7.7 Use of colours Escape routes Escape routes shall be highlighted in bright green. ((references to come in an Annex related to colours, RAL 6019)) Safety signs Safety signs shall be reproduced in safety colours according to ISO and ISO Point of location of the user The point of location of the user shall be safety blue according to ISO Background colour The colour of the background shall be white or photoluminscent white according to ISO ISO 2006 All rights reserved 5

13 7.7.5 Outline of facility structural elements The colour of the outline of facility structural elements shall be black Header The colour of the header shall be safety green according to ISO Text The colour of the text shall be black. 8 Materials Escape plans shall be made of material that resists the environmental influences at the site of the application (e.g. light resistance and resistance to humidity). If required, durability characteristics shall be measured by methods described in ISO Installation and location Escape plans shall be located so that they are conspicuous in their environment of use. These plans shall be permanently fixed and are intended to be located a) at positions where occupants can learn the means of escape and b) at strategic points of the escape route, which can include: on every floor at primary entry points near lifts and stairs in every room, e.g. hotel rooms at appropriate training points, e.g. cafeterias, office centres, meeting places 10 Inspection and revision Regular inspections of the escape plans shall be conducted at regular intervals, to ensure they are legible, conspicuous and comprehensible. Any change of the facility or its fire safety or emergency procedures shall result in a review of the escape plans and, when necessary, revision to the escape plans. 6 ISO 2006 All rights reserved
