Circuit Protection Devices Definition: A device used to protect circuit cables, people and livestock against electric shock and fire resulting from an overload or fault current 16
Overcurrent Definition: A current exceeding the rated value. For conductors the rated value is the current-carrying capacity. Overcurrent Overload An overcurrent occurring in a circuit which is electrically sound. Fault current A current resulting from a fault. 17
Overload 10A 10A 10A = 30A 2.5mm 2 cable current carrying capacity = 24A - too many appliances on a socket outlet circuit. - mechanical overload of an electric motor. - an electric motor becoming jammed. 18
Fault current - Mechanical damage. - Breakdown in insulation. - Accidental contact with live conductors. 19
Earth Fault Current * A fault current flowing to earth. A small earth fault current can arc eventually cause fire. An earth fault current could result in electric shock. 20
Circuit Breaker A device capable of making, carrying and breaking normal load currents and also making and automatically breaking, under pre-determined conditions, abnormal currents such as short-circuit currents. Circuit breakers to IEC (MCB) Circuit breakers to IEC (MCCB, ACB) 21
Circuit Breaker Arc splitter plates Magnetic coil Arc chute Bi-metal mechanism 22

* Earth Fault Protection 35
Why use RCDs (Residual Current Devices)? Direct contact - Supplementary protection only against contact with normally live parts, will reduce the risk of electric shock Indirect contact - Main protection where circuit breakers or fuses will not disconnect within specified times Protection against fire - I n < 500mA to equipment other than that essential for the welfare of livestock. 36
Direct contact Contact of persons or livestock with live parts Basic protective measures - protection by insulation of live parts - protection by barriers or an enclosure - protection by obstacles - protection by placing out of reach RCD used as supplementary protection against contact with live parts - I n < 30mA; disconnection time < 40ms at 150mA. 37
Indirect Contact Contact of persons or livestock with exposed-conductive-parts which have become live under fault conditions. 38

Selection of Enclosures Number of modules needed IP rating Surface or Flush mounting Metal or Plastic Plain or Transparent Door 47
Glow Wire Test IEC Safety test to evaluate the flame resistant properties of plastic materials used in electrical devices. Protect against the risk of fire from overheated or electrically energised parts which may cause the plastic material to ignite. The glow wire simulates an over-heated part which then comes into contact with plastic materials. 1) What happens if you don t use flame retardant material. Test - Non Fire Retardant.MOV 2) Tests with flame retardant material and self-extinguishing. Test - Fire Retardant.MOV IEC dictates that the material must achieve a 650 C GWT for surface & flush installations. 48
