1 Technical Update August 2014 ZITON/EDWARDS DEVICE BASES REPLACEMENT OR REWORK REQUIRED INTRODUCTION We have become aware of a field issue with Ziton and Escape base terminal connections which can potentially result in detectors not making sufficient contact with the base to connect it electrically to the loop or zone. This bulletin is to inform installers how to recognise a base from the affected batches, which parts are affected and how to resolve any problems experienced in the field. This manufacturing issue has already been addressed in the factory and so newly produced bases are not affected. ISSUE It has been reported to us that Ziton and Escape loop devices may not connect properly in some cases when installed in certain device bases. This is due to a mechanical misalignment between the detector and base contacts. The misalignment is caused by the gap being too wide between the terminal grips that make electrical contact between the plugged in detector and the base. In such cases the detector will not be detected by the fire alarm panel as it is may not be powered correctly. The loop device will report as offline if the detector is configured in the panel device configuration. The solution is for installers either to return the detector base for free of charge replacement or re-work, or to make an adjustment of the terminals in the field as described. This issue has been resolved through implementation of enhanced quality procedures at our plant in China and shipments from 24 July 2014 onwards are not affected. In order to recognise the potentially affected bases, please check the label on the detector boxes as shown in figure 1 below. Figure 1 Box label showing Made in China TOOLS REQUIRED Terminal screw driver Engineering gauge with diameter 3.9 mm Engineering gauge with diameter 3.4 mm (An engineering gauge or chuck end of HSS drill bits can be used for this purpose.) EVALUATION In order to evaluate the correct spacing between the legs of the clips, a gauge with diameter of 3.9 mm is required. Every clip in the base must be checked. If some clips are found to be outside the engineering specification, these clips can be reworked as described below under REWORK. Page 2 of 5

3 Figure 2 - Base clip with correct clip spacing Figure 3 - Base clip with incorrect spacing REWORK To ensure proper electrical contact between the detector and base, the terminals in the base may be reworked with a screw driver as shown in figure 6, 7 and 8 below. The difference between a problematic and correct base terminal can be seen by comparing figures 2 and 3 above. In the correctly aligned terminals there is a visible gap between the outer metal clip and the plastic ridge in the base. Where there is no gap there may be a poor or no connection when a detector is installed in the base. The solution is essentially to create a gap using a screw driver to force the outer clips inwards.
