1 ARGUS movement detectors Working principle Almost all movement detectors, including the ARGUS, function according to the principle of passive infrared technology. They measure and compare the infrared radiation in their detection range, which means they are passive and do not emit any radiation themselves. All objects (human beings, animals, vehicles, trees etc.) emit infrared heat radiation. Recognition of a movement in the detection range is dependent on several factors: Direction of movement for the object in the surveillance area. The largest range is achieved if the active and passive zones are at right angles. Difference in temperature of the object compared to the surroundings (the reaction threshold of the movement detector and therefore the range expands as the difference increases). Size of the object to be surveyed. Speed with which the object moves through the detection range. Atmospheric influences such as rain, snow or mist absorb infrared radiation and reduce the range. A function on the appliances regulates the duration of a detected switching process, which returns to zero whenever movement has been detected in the surveillance area. This ensures that illumination is uninterrupted even when objects remain in the surveillance area for a longer period of time. Installation: The correct location for the ARGUS 1. Installation height The installation height has a direct influence on the range of the movement detector. The optimal height is 2.50 m. If the movement detector is installed at any other height, this will affect the range. 2. Secure installation The ARGUS must be installed on a solid foundation because if the detector moves in any way, this can also result in switching. 3. Distance away from the controlled lamp To avoid unintentional user switching, an installation location should be chosen which ensures that the lamp is not positioned in the direct ARGUS detection range. 5. Distance away from sources of interference Sources of interference such as roads and neighbouring properties should be outside the detection range of the ARGUS to avoid movements from there unintentionally triggering the switch. It should be noted that large and very fast-moving objects such as cars, lorries or buses can also be detected when they are further away. The temperature of branches, twigs or bushes can also be temporarily different to the surroundings. If these are moved by the wind, this movement will trigger the ARGUS. This influence is weaker if the objects are further away (5-6 m). 6. Protected installation Raindrops running over the lens of the movement detector and direct sunlight can influence the temporary infrared image of the ARGUS. As is true for any other passive infrared detector, the ARGUS should be protected as far as possible from rain and direct sunlight to avoid unwanted switching. 7. Installing several ARGUS detectors If several ARGUS detectors are installed next to each other on a long façade, care must be taken to ensure that the beam paths of the individual movement detectors overlap. This is the only way to guarantee uninterrupted surveillance. The utilisation of large groups of appliances with more than movement detectors is unfavourable with respect to both technical and functional operation and is not recommended. 8. Switching of inductive loads If inductive loads such as transformers, relays, protection and fluorescent lamps are switched with the ARGUS, this creates voltage spikes which can result in load reactivation ( permanent lighting effect ). Parallel switching of a capacitor (Art. no ) relating to the inductive load can reduce the voltage spikes. Operation of ARGUS with alarm systems ARGUS movement detectors can be successfully used as an addition to an alarm system. The ARGUS switches on lights even before intruders break open the windows or doors and thus trigger the alarm. In most cases, this means that intruders are frightened off even before they can inflict damage on the property. However, the ARGUS is not suitable as an alarm component in the sense of the Association for Property Insurers as the ARGUS is dependent on a power supply, and the automatic operating test which is performed whenever the power supply has been interrupted can activate the alarm. Installation of the movement detector above a lamp should also be avoided. The heat radiation from the light can influence the functionality of the movement detector, which might result in permanent lighting. If the controlled lamps are installed in the ARGUS detection range, a sufficient distance must be maintained. With high connected loads, this distance can be 3 m. If the distance is not achievable, the ARGUS should be blanked out by fitting the blank inserts provided in the direction of the lamp.. Lateral installation to the direction of motion Optimal movement detection is only provided if the ARGUS is installed laterally to the detection range. This ensures that the zones are cut through as vertically as possible. Installation locations in which the objects to be detected move directly towards the movement detector result in a considerable reduction of the range. 20

They are accessed by pushing open the cover until you feel that it has opened all the way, and then removing the cover. The preset values can be read using the arrows. A = Inner security zone with a surveillance area of 360 in a radius of approx. m. B = Middle security zone with a surveillance range of 220, with a detection range of approx. 9 m x 18 m. C = Outer security zone with a surveillance range of 220, with a detection range of approx. 16 m x 28 m. The range values are based on average conditions with an installation height of 2.50 m and are therefore only of an orientational nature. The range can vary greatly due to temperature changes. A = Function display: lights up whenever a movement has been detected B = Brightness sensor: should not be covered C = Brightness: usage during the day (sun symbol/right stop) D = Time adjustment: 1 second (left stop) E = Sensitivity: infinitely adjustable F = Adjustment function for sensor head G = Interface for extension with a radio module H = Semi-automatic timer function: for adjusting the switch-on time in the morning, e.g. 5 a.m. I = Semi-automatic timer function: for adjusting the switch-off time in the evening, e.g. 11 p.m. The ARGUS functions can now be easily adapted to prevailing conditions. Adjust the sensor head to match the surveillance area (the direction of rotation must be changed when it cannot be turned any further) and check whether the ARGUS switches the user and the function display by walking into the surveillance area from the edge. The sensor head can also be adjusted axially by 12. In the case of ceiling installation it is possible to adjust the sensor head in a horizontal direction, towards the left or right by 25, and in a vertical direction, upwards by and downwards by 29. If the ARGUS is installed on the ceiling, the lens must be turned as shown and the direction of rotation must be changed when the lens cannot be turned any further (see illustration). A centring ridge on the upper half of the spherical head can be utilised as an aid to orientation. 6 Lateral installation to the direction of motion Optimal movement detection is only provided if the ARGUS is installed laterally to the detection range. This ensures that the zones are cut through as vertically as possible. Installation locations in which the objects to be detected move directly towards the movement detector result in a considerable reduction of the range. Areas which should be blanked from the surveillance remain intact in the cover. Care should be taken to ensure that the frame is not cut away as this reduces the stability of the cover. The new ARGUS movement detectors are equipped with improved temperature compensation which provides nearly constant properties despite changing weather conditions. To enable optimal adaptation of the detection range to prevailing conditions, it is possible to adjust the lower section of the sensor head both in a horizontal direction, towards the left or right by 30, to adjust the sensor head in a vertical direction, upwards by 10 or downwards by 30. The sensor head can also be swivelled. 27

Adjusting the range of the three 100 sectors The adjusting screws F1, F2 and F3 are used to set the maximum and minimum range for each 100 sector. If min is horizontally visible, this means that the range for this sector has been reduced by 60%. The sensitivity adjustment affects all three sectors. 29

If it is necessary to change sides, push the U-shaped release clip at the bottom of the ARGUS all the way into the openings. Pull off the sensor head. Turn the wall mount by 180 and push the sensor head back into place. Installation of the lengthening piece In order to avoid interference in the 300 detection range by objects such as downpipes or similar when installing the movement detector on corners, the ARGUS 300 can be fitted with a lengthening piece (length 117 mm: polar white, Art. no and dark brazil, Art. no ). The integrated function display can be used to check the ARGUS very quickly and easily at the installation site. If the brightness drops below a preset threshold ( lux), the slightest movements in the room are sufficient to activate the lighting automatically via channel 1 (presence channel). If, however, the room is sufficiently bright or if no presence is detected any more, the ARGUS Presence switches off the light and thus saves energy. Let us assume a room has daylight measuring 200 lux. ARGUS Presence, however, is set to a brightness threshold of 500 lux. If it switches on the artificial light of 00 lux on detecting movement, there will be a total of 600 lux in the room. Normally it should switch off the light again. But as the ARGUS Presence is "thinking", the artificial light stays on. If the daylight increases by a further 300 lux (900 lux measured in room), the device will switch off the 00 lux artificial light. The device is designed for use in offices, schools, public buildings or in the home. The detection range is divided into 5 levels with 71 zones and 28 switching segments. ARGUS Presence (Art. no ) and ARGUS Presence for use as an extension (Art. no ) have got a second relay channel. This channel controls - very efficiently and irrespective of the brightness - all connected systems such as heating, ventilation or alarm systems. So the ventilation or heating, for example, stays on while the light is turned off because of adequate outside brightness. Or when entering the office, the lights and the heating/ ventilation are switched on automatically. If there is adequate outside brightness, the presence channel switches off the light while the heating/ventilation continue to work. The INSTABUS EIB units have got up to two further channels depending on the application. For surface-mounted installation, the insert is installed in the surface-mounted housing (Art. no ) which is available as an accessory. ARGUS Presence 1h Channel 2 5 min 2h Test 2 min Channel 1 10s Test 30min 300 LUX Flush-mounted installation: Test When connecting the unit to the mains or when there is a brief interruption (> 1 s) in the mains supply (e.g. by using a pushbutton as break contact), the outputs are switched on immediately. Surface-mounted installation: The control elements for the two ON times and the brightness threshold are located on the back of the sensor head. In test position, channel 1 has an ON time of 1 s and brightness dependence is switched off. Channel 2 has an ON time of 3 s. Surveillance range Installation of INSTABUS ARGUS Presence The base plate supplied with the unit is fixed with two screws to a size 60 mm flush-mounted installation box or fitted in the surfacemounted housing (Art. no ) available as an accessory. 16 ARGUS Presence detector ARGUS Presence System (Art. no ) Power unit ARGUS Presence System Sensor head Length = 2.5 m The system comprises a sensor head and a power unit with a fixed lead (length 2.5 m), the other end of which is plugged into the sensor head. The sensor head has 2 sockets to permit throughconnection. Up to eight sensor heads (Art. no ) can be connected to one power unit (master-slave principle). Several sensor heads can therefore be installed for continuous surveillance of long corridors or large rooms. The ON time is determined by the sensor head which detected the last movement. Control is also possible via an extension input. The sensor heads are fitted in 68 mm openings in the ceiling (socket drill) by means of spring retainers. When fitted to the ceiling of a room, each sensor head detects the presence of people within its surveillance range and at the same time measures the intensity of the natural daylight at the installation site. If the brightness drops below the threshold set on the sensor head ( lux), the slightest movement in the room will suffice to activate the lighting automatically via channel 1 (presence channel) of the power unit. The switching function of the presence channel in the power section is signalled to all connected sensor heads via the connecting lead. In this way, each sensor head can determine the proportion of artificial light present at its installation point. If there is sufficient ambient brightness, the light will be switched off via the power unit to save energy and money, even when movement is detected. The power unit has a second relay channel with a floating connector. Channel 2 is equipped with enhanced protection against false alarms and reacts only to movements, irrespective of the ambient brightness. Any number of conventional push-buttons (make contacts, Art. no ), up to ten extension inserts (Art. no ) or up to 10 extension TELE inserts (Art. no , with the Distance 2010 and 2050 IR remote controls) can be used individually or in combination to operate the system. The operating terminals and the power unit must be connected in phase. The maximum length of the control line to the extension input must not exceed 20 m. Channel 1 is activated by briefly pressing the push-button or touching the sensor plate. The ON time set on the sensor for channel 1 is started when activated via the extension input. Relay 1 cuts out upon expiry of this time. The longest ON time set for channel 1 is always effective when several sensor heads are installed. The control elements for the two ON times and the brightness threshold are located on the back of the sensor head. Channel 2 Channel 1 In test position, channel 1 has an ON time of 1 s and brightness dependence is switched off. Channel 2 has an ON time of 3 s. The sensor beams should overlap in order to ensure complete surveillance. Dimensions 36

18 ARGUS flush-mounted movement detectors ARGUS flush-mounted movement detector Function: If the ARGUS flush-mounted movement detector detects such an object, it switches on the downstream load, e.g. a filament lamp. The ARGUS flush-mounted movement detector switches off again after the set time has elapsed. The switching duration is variable in steps from 1 second to 8 minutes. If movement is detected repeatedly within the time interval, the set time starts again from zero. As with all devices in the ARGUS safety program, the ARGUS 180 flush-mounted movement detector also combines comfort and efficiency with an attractive design. The ARGUS 180 flushmounted movement detector was designed specially for indoor use and can be replaced easily and quickly with light switches. Capable of detecting persons at a radius of approx. 8 m exhibiting a temperature difference with respect to the background, e.g. a wall. The ARGUS 180 flush-mounted movement detector has an integrated light sensor, which makes automatic switching possible depending on the ambient brightness. With the model which includes a switch, it is also possible to switch over to permanent light or manual operation. A maximum of two ARGUS flush-mounted movement detectors with electronic switch insert and a maximum of four ARGUS flushmounted movement detectors with relay switch insert can be connected in parallel on the output side. Our power boosters Art. no. : can be used to enhance the performance of the ARGUS flush-mounted movement detectors with electronic switch inserts. Only capable of switching ohmic loads. The ARGUS flush-mounted movement detector with relay switch insert requires a neutral conductor and has a relay output. Capable of switching ohmic, inductive and capacitive loads. In terms of design you can choose between various Merten switch programs. The flush-mounted programs to choose from are: M- SMART, M-ARC, M-PLAN, ARTEC, M1, ATELIER, OCTOCOLOR, EPOCA, ANTIK and TRANCENT. And as far as use in damp rooms is concerned, the ARGUS 180 flush-mounted movement detector is also available as a splashproof model: AQUA CLASSIC. Note No switched lamps should be positioned within the detection range of the ARGUS because the heat emitted by the lamp may adversely effect the movement detector. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight because in extreme cases the sensor may be destroyed. When mounted on walls at a height of approx m, small animals such as dogs, cats etc. are generally not detected (dependent on spatial conditions). The light emitter and receiver are arranged in the measuring chamber in such a way that the light beams from the emitter cannot reach the receiver directly. Only the light scattered by suspended particles (Tyndall effect) actually reaches the receiver, where it is converted into an electrical signal. This design means it does not need any radioactive material. Smouldering fires in particular are rapidly detected by the smoke detector which triggers the alarm. The built-in acoustic alarm is triggered as soon as smoke enters the measuring chamber. Battery-powered basic unit with integrated interface for additional functions. Automatic self-test of smoke evaluation, making it extremely reliable and unlikely to develop faults. Weak battery indicator (LED and a short acoustic warning signal) typically indicates a weak battery for a period of 30 days. Dirt/fault indication with LED and a short acoustic warning signal once per minute. Integrated test button. If the smoke detector is functioning properly, it will emit a warning signal when you press the test button. All wire-bound or radio-linked devices are tested. Loud pulsating warning signal, approx. 85dB(A). Plug-in extension modules permit expansion to a complete smoke detector system. The integrated wiring terminal in the device makes creating a system easy by interconnecting up to 0 smoke detectors via a two-wire line. When a fire is detected by one of the smoke detectors, the alarm is triggered on all interconnected smoke detectors. The plug-in relay module (Art. no ) has a voltage-free two-way contact via which the smoke detector can be connected to external signalling devices, alarm systems, fire alarm loops or the INSTABUS EIB building management system (break current monitoring). Several smoke detectors can be interconnected without wiring via the plug-in radio module (Art. no ). The module uses the 868MHz frequency band. Wire-bound and radio-linked smoke detectors can be combined. When a fire is detected by one of the smoke detectors in the interconnected system, the alarm is triggered on all smoke detectors connected via the extension modules. Existing Merten smoke detector systems with radio or relay modules (Art. no with or ) can be integrated into this system. Installation points Minimum protection - One smoke detector should be installed in the corridor between the living and sleeping areas. - In long corridors more detectors may be required. The distance between detectors should not be greater than 8 m. - Where there are several separate sleeping areas, a detector should be installed in front of every sleeping area. - In buildings with more than one floor, a smoke detector should be installed in the corridor on every floor. Increased protection - In addition to the minimum protection, a smoke detector should be installed in every room. Each detector can monitor a room with an area of up to 60 m 2 and a height of up to 6 metres. The detector should be installed on the ceiling, preferably in the centre of the room. If this is not possible, it should be installed at least 50 cm away from any walls. Recommended installation We would recommend the following: At least one smoke detector in the corridor (to monitor escape routes) between living and sleeping areas. One smoke detector in every living room and bedroom for maximum protection At least one smoke detector in the corridor on every floor of a multi-storey building One smoke detector above the stairs if the attic rooms are used On boats and in caravans, smoke detectors can also be installed on the ceiling. When travelling, simply take the smoke detector with you for use in your hotel room. Unsuitable installation points Smoke detectors should not be installed in the following places: Near ventilation shafts and strong draughts Directly under the top of the roof (keep a distance of 30 cm from the top of the roof) In rooms where considerable steam, dust or smoke are generated under normal conditions (for instance in workshops, bathrooms, wash-rooms) In rooms in which the temperature can rise above +0 C or fall below +5 C. 0

Information on radio transmission The radio module uses the 868 MHz frequency band ensuring that there is very little interference. The free field range is over 100 m. In buildings the range is approx. 30 m, enough to cover two storeys. The range can be optimised by aligning the smoke detectors. The range within buildings very much depends on the type of structures (e.g. materials used for walls and ceilings). Reception can be impaired by - harmonic interference from 33 MHz equipment - receivers being overdriven by mobile telephones in their direct vicinity - sporadic interference from transmitters on adjacent channels (+/-200KHz) 1. In the event of an alarm, the smoke detector that detected the smoke will give out an acoustic warning signal. 2. If the alarm lasts longer than 5 seconds, the detector that detected the smoke will give out an alarm signal for at least 60 seconds. 3. The receivers connected in line (same address) are activated by a self-test signal roughly every 50 seconds and check whether a signal has been received from an alarm-generating detector. This means that not more than 50 seconds can elapse between the first alarm triggered and activation of all smoke detectors connected in line..
