KD-1230 Innovative extinguishing with Novec TM 1230 by 3M TM
KD-1230 fire extinguishing system The next generation in fixed fire protection is the fire extinguishing system KD-1230 engineered for use with 3M TM Novec TM 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. KD-1230 offers fast and effective fire protection. It is space-saving, environment-friendly, and poses no safety risk to personnel in occupied spaces at the normal design concentration. The Kidde 42 bar KD-1230 system achieves optimal distribution of the Novec 1230 fluid with maximum design flexibility. Function When a fire is identified by the automatic detector (1) or on release of the manual push button (2), the fire detection panel (3) activates the alarm devices (4/5). After the elapse of an object-related delay time, the cylinder (6) of the extinguishing medium is opened electrically and the Novec 1230 extinguishing medium is discharged through extinguishing nozzles (7) into the room
Novec 1230 Fluid The The Novec 1230 fluid has been developed by by the the company 3M as a long-term alternative and and is an is an environment-friendly extinguishing medium. In In the the event event of of an an activation of of the the extinguishing system, Novec 1230 fluid possesses the unique characteristic of of having an an atmospheric lifetime of of only only five five days. days. Novec 1230 fluid contains carbon, fluorine and and oxygen that that is is stored as as a a colourless and and almost odourless liquid. Due Due to to its its excellent extinguishing capabilities and and a short a short discharge time time of of a a maximum of of seconds, a fire a fire is is extinguished in the the shortest possible time. time. Novec 1230 fluid is is a C 6 6 fluoroketone with with the the chemical formula CF 3 CF 32 CF 2 C(O)CF(CF 3 ) 2. 3 ) It 2. is It liquid is liquid at at room room temperature. When When Novec 1230 fluid is is discharged under under pressure by by an an extinguishing nozzle specially developed for for the the KD-1230 system, it is it is evaporated instantly and and distributed as as a a gaseous extinguishing medium in in the the protected area. area. Novec 1230 fluid possesses a high penetration capacity and and achieves a a homogeneous (uniform) mixture of of the the required extinguishing concentration in in the the protected area. area. The The extinguishing effect effect of of Novec 1230 in in the the fire fire is is founded on on a a physical basis: basis: by by heat heat retraction of of the the flame flame up up to to a point a point at at which which combustion reactions can can no no longer take take place. place. There There is no is no impairment of of vision vision when when discharging. Novec 1230 is is a non-corrosive, electrically non-conductive extinguishing medium. It It neither damages nor nor leaves leaves residues on on sensitive equipment. Safety There There is no is no risk risk of of human asphyxiation with with Novec 1230 fluid since it it does not act act by by oxygen depletion in in the the hazard zone. zone. Novec 1230 has been assessed positively by by the the German Hygienic Institute in in Gelsenkirchen and and the the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). (EPA). The The EPA EPA programme for for significant new new alternatives classifies Novec 1230 fluid as as harmless for use as as an an extinguishing medium for for discharge in in rooms occupied by by people. At At the the required design concentration, Novec 1230 fluid has a high safety factor factor before the the NOAEL value value (No (No Observable Adverse Effect Effect Level) Level) is is achieved. The The work work cycle cycle of of the the Employers Association confirms that that Novec 1230 fluid fluid is an is an effective extinguishing medium, in in particular for for use use in in areas areas frequented by by people.
KD-1230 fire extinguishing system Advantages Highly environment-friendly Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1 Simple and fast refilling, also possible on site Atmospheric lifetime of only five days Highly effective on Class A, B and electrical fires Safe application in areas occupied by people Accepted by the work cycle Fire Protection of the Employers Association Non-corrosive and electrically nonconductive No residues of extinguishing medium System pressure: 42 bar Low installation and maintenance costs Computer-aided design of the distribution network and discharge nozzles increases the effectiveness of the system Approval by the Saxon State Ministry of Affairs for the fire classes A and B. Approval number SP 45/03. Inert gases CO 2 KD-1230 min. up to 0 = Fire detection Pre-warning time Novec 1230 Time advantage KD time (s) Discharge time Fire extinguished KD-1230 Engineering Components
Applications KD-1230 fire protection systems engineered for use with Novec 1230 fluid are well suited for the protection of high-value assets and for the avoidance of fire hazards, as well as the disastrous system failures which they cause. Areas of application Computer rooms EDP areas Telecommunications equipment Control rooms and permanently occupied measuring and control stations Storage rooms and archives Medical facilities and laboratory equipment
KD-1230 fire extinguishing system Feuerlöschanlage mit KD-200 Environment Novec 1230 fluid presents an environmental long-term alternative. It does not fall under the regulations of the Kyoto Protocol. It has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0, an atmospheric lifetime of only five days, and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1. When Novec 1230 fluid has been discharged into the protected room after the detection of a fire, it prevents the consequences of an uncontrolled fire because it is distributed in the room in the shortest possible time. On decommissioning a KD-1230 system, the Novec 1230 fluid can be readily reused. System design KD-1230 systems are custom designed using software approved by VdS for optimum performance. Novec 1230 fluid is stored as a liquid and discharged as a gas pressurized with nitrogen at 42 bar. The KD-1230 system has minimal space requirements compared to inert gas systems.
Refilling Novec 1230 is a liquid at room temperature and so quick refilling of the extinguishing system is possible, even on site. Following activation of the extinguishing system, the cylinders are refilled with Novec 1230 using pumps and re- pressurized with nitrogen to 42 bar. Re-commissioning of the system is therefore possible in the shortest time, and so consequential losses associated with downtime are kept to a minimum. Novec 1230 storage container Approvals VdS Schadensverhütung conducted tests to determine the required extinguishing concentration according to ISO and to VdS System and installer approvals by VdS Schadenverhütung under the approval numbers S and E The fire extinguishing media and devices are approved by the Saxon State Ministry of Affairs under the approval number SP 45/03.
