15 ADCP Issue 3 August 2000 Section 3: Description 1 GENERAL 2 CHASSIS This section provides functional, physical, and technical descriptions of the DS3/STS-1 Protected Repeater System plus basic application information. The DS3/STS-1 Protected Repeater System provides a cost-effective means of distributing and rerouting DS3 or STS-1 signals. Designed to operate from a 48 Vdc office supply, this system can be configured as either a fully-protected hot standby system or with a mixture of protected PIOR or PBOR modules and non-protected IOR or BOR modules. The only restriction is that the PIOR modules must be installed in pairs in adjacent odd-even slots. (See Figure 4-3.) Repeater chassis are designed to be installed in a standard equipment rack or cabinet located in a Central Office or other restricted access area. The repeater chassis can be installed in a 19-inch or 23-inch rack, or on an interior wall. All the repeaters in this system are the same size 1.3" wide, 6.0" high, and approximately 9.0" long (3.2 cm 15.0 cm 22.8 cm). 2.1 Rack Mounting Chassis The 19-inch chassis shown in Figure 3-1 can be configured with up to 12 modules. Protected and non-protected modules may be intermixed in the same chassis. The standard 23-inch chassis shown in Figure 3-2 can be configured with up to 16 modules. The horizontal 23-inch chassis shown in Figure 3-3 can be configured with up to three modules. Protected and non-protected modules may be intermixed in the same chassis (15.2 CM) (48.3 CM) (29.7 CM) 9004-B Figure Inch Rack Mount Chassis Page 3-2

Wall Mount Chassis 2.3 System Powering To provide redundant power and full alarm capability, all DS3/STS-1 chassis are powered from two separate 48 Vdc office battery power sources. The power inputs to the chassis should be fused externally at a convenient, nearby fuse and alarm panel. Power is applied to the chassis through a screw-down terminal block at the left end of the chassis backplane. See Figures 4-3 and 4-4. Module interfaces to 48 Vdc office battery power sources are via the 96-pin connectors located within the chassis and the 96-pin mating connector on each repeater module. An onboard DC-to-DC converter within each repeater module produces the voltage required to power the regeneration circuits. An internal non-user-replaceable fuse within each repeater module provides overcurrent protection should an internal failure cause the repeater to draw excessive current. A green POWER LED on the front panel of each repeater indicates whenever the repeater module is powered. Page 3-4

18 ADCP Issue 3 August 2000 Section 3: Description 2.4 Remote Alarming The PIOR and PBOR repeaters report major and minor alarms through alarm relays and front panel LED indicators. The front panel LED indicators for IOR, PIOR, BOR, and PBOR modules are shown in Tables 3-2, 3-6, 3-10, and 3-15, respectively. Separate sets of alarm LEDs are provided for each regenerator channel (A and B) in the IOR, PIOR, and BOR, and for circuits 1 and 2 in the PBOR. Each alarm relay consists of a set of contacts with normally open (NO) and common (COM) contacts. Alarm signals from individual modules are routed through the 96-pin connectors, through the chassis backplane, to the screw-down terminal block at the left end the chassis backplane. Four pins of the terminal block are wired to local alarm surveillance equipment. For more detailed information concerning alarm indications, refer to individual repeater module descriptions. On PIOR modules, all faults activate the minor alarm relay. On all other modules except the PIOR, loss of a received signal activates the minor alarm and causes the front panel RX LOS LED to light yellow. On all modules except the PIOR, the major alarm relay is activated by loss of both external A and B power feeds, failure of the power converter, a blown fuse, or loss of the output signal in the presence of an input signal. The TX LOS LED will also be red for loss of output only. On the PIOR module, the major alarm relay is activated by the same conditions that cause a major alarm on the other modules but these conditions must be present on both modules. 3 PORTABLE CHASSIS The 13-inch-wide portable chassis (Figure 3-5) holds a total of nine BOR or PBOR modules and is powered directly from a grounded, 110 Vac wall socket. The portable chassis has a cover to protect modules during transport. A storage area within the cover holds the power cord, patch cords and manual. The portable chassis has no remote alarming capabilities. Page 3-5

Portable Chassis 4 IOR MODULE 4.1 General The DS3/STS-1 Dual Intraoffice Repeater Modules (IOR) shown in Figures 3-6 and 3-7 are used in DSX-3 applications where the maximum distance allowed between DSX-3 crossconnect bays, or the distance between a DSX-3 cross-connect bay and DS3/STS-1 equipment, is exceeded. The maximum length allowed for cross-connect cables between DSX-3 bays is a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table 3-1. The maximum allowed input and output cable length between a DSX bay and a network element is also a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table 3-1. These distances should be used as general approximations for system planning. Actual distances will vary depending on the loss characteristics of the specific cable used. Page 3-6

An onboard DC-to-DC converter within each repeater module produces the voltage required to power the regeneration circuits. An internal non-user-replaceable fuse within each repeater module provides overcurrent protection should an internal failure cause the repeater to draw excessive current 4.5 Front Panel LEDs A green POWER LED on the front panel of each repeater indicates whenever the repeater module is powered. The alarm indicators on the IOR module include the front panel RX LOS (receive loss of signal) and TX LOS (transmit loss of signal) LEDs. Loss of input signal to channel A or channel B causes the associated RX LOS LED to light yellow and closes the module minor alarm relay. Loss of a channel s output signal in the presence of an input signal causes the associated TX LOS LED to light red and closes the module major alarm relay, assuming the other channel is operating. The M ALARM ON/OFF (enable/disable minor alarm) switch on the RP3-A20000 module front panel allows the user to enable or disable lighting the RX LOS LEDs and open or close the minor alarm relay. 30 ADCP Issue 3 August 2000 Section 3: Description 5.4 Switching Capabilities A fault condition within a PIOR module will cause the regenerator function to switch to its partner (protect) module. A green ON LE LED on the front panel of the module identifies which of the PIOR modules is operating in the working mode. Table 3-5 lists the various switching criteria for the PIOR modules. The switching function can also be performed manually by pressing the SELECT pushbutton on the PIOR module desired to be brought on line. The SELECT pushbutton is located on the front panel of the module and is recessed to prevent inadvertent activation. Table 3-5. Note: Fault condition = one or all of the following conditions: Loss of 48 Vdc battery power On-board power failure Transmitter failure 5.5 Power Connections The 48 Vdc office battery power is applied from the chassis backplane through the 96-pin connector located on the rear panel of the repeater module. An onboard DC-to-DC converter within each repeater module produces the voltage required to power the regeneration circuits. An internal non-user-replaceable fuse within each repeater module provides overcurrent protection should an internal failure cause the repeater to draw excessive current. 5.6 Front Panel LEDs A green POWER LED on the front panel of each repeater indicates whenever the repeater module is powered. The alarm indicators on the PIOR module include the front panel OPT ERR (option error), RX LOS (receive loss of signal) and TX LOS (transmit loss of signal) LEDs. If the OPT ERR LED indication on the online or working PIOR module is anything other than green, the minor alarm relay also closes. See Table 7-1 for descriptions of the conditions indicated when the OPT ERR LED is either yellow, red, or off. Loss of input signal to a channel A or channel B causes the associated RX LOS LED to light yellow and closes the module minor alarm relay. Loss of a channel s output signal in the presence of an input signal causes the associated TX LOS LED to light red and closes the module major alarm relay, assuming the protect partner module is operating. Table 3-6 lists the PIOR module LED colors and their corresponding conditions. Page 3-17

The maximum length allowed for cross-connect cables between DSX-3 bays is a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table 3-8. The maximum allowed input and output cable length between a DSX bay and a network element is also a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table 3-8. These distances should be used as general approximations for system planning. Actual distances will vary depending on the loss characteristics of the specific cable used. The BOR module consists of a printed circuit board, front panel, and sheet metal enclosure. The catalog number of the repeater is printed on the front panel for identification purposes, and the common language equipment identifier (CLEI) label is also mounted on the front panel. The BOR module has a separate monitor (MON) jack for each channel (A and B). The DS3/STS-1 mode select switch and all visual indicators (LEDs) are on the repeater front panel. (The mode select switch is recessed into the front panel to prevent inadvertent activation.) Functions of all the front panel indicators, switches, and coaxial jacks are listed in Table 7-1. 35 ADCP Issue 3 August 2000 Section 3: Description 6.2 Application The DS3/STS-1 Dual Bridging Office Repeater (BOR) Module is used to patch a signal from the monitor jack (MON) on a DSX-3 module through the repeater to the jack on a second DSX-3 module. The Dual BOR module has two regenerators (channel A and channel B) for patching bi-directional or unidirectional signals. The maximum cable distance allowed between the BOR repeater and a DSX-3 bay, or between the BOR repeater and a network element, is defined by the cable type selection, the setting of the channel A and B line build-out (LBO) switches (see section 6.7), and the operating mode selection (see section 6.6). The first application shown in Figure 3-17 illustrates a repeater situated between two DSX-3 bays. This application allows a maximum cable separation of 900 feet (274.3 meters) between bays. The second application in Figure 3-17 illustrates a repeater situated between a DSX-3 bay and a network element, such as a multiplexer (Mux) or a digital cross-connect system (DCS). This application allows a maximum cable separation of 1,350 feet (411.5 meters) between the bay and the network element. The protection feature inserts a redundant regenerator into the single data path provided by the PBOR module to ensure continuous service on the DS3 or STS-1 circuit. The maximum length allowed for cross-connect cables between DSX-3 bays is a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table The maximum allowed input and output cable length between a DSX bay and a network element is also a function of the cable type selected and the operating mode as shown in Table These distances should be used as general approximations for system planning. Actual distances will vary depending on the loss characteristics of the specific cable used. The PBOR module consists of a printed circuit board, front panel, and sheet metal enclosure. The catalog number of the repeater is printed on the front panel for identification purposes, and the common language equipment identifier (CLEI) label is also mounted on the front panel. The PBOR module has a monitor (MON) jack on the output of the on-line regenerator (circuit 1 or circuit 2). Page 3-26

41 ADCP Issue 3 August 2000 Section 3: Description 7.2 Application The DS3/STS-1 PBOR module is used in the same applications as the BOR module; to regenerate a DS3 or STS-1 signal from a DSX-3 monitor (MON) jack when in-service rerouting or patching of that signal is required at the DSX-3 bay. The PBOR module has two regenerators providing the working and standby function for a single DS3 or STS-1 data path. Two PBOR modules are required to regenerate bi-directional DS3 or STS-1 communication. Each PBOR module contains two regenerators (labeled CIRCUIT 1 and CIRCUIT 2), one regenerator operating in the working mode and the second regenerator operating in the protect mode. Should a fault condition occur in the working circuit, the protect circuit takes over the regeneration of the incoming signal. A green ON-LE LED on the module front panel indicates which PBOR circuit (1 or 2) is operating in the working mode. The other PBOR circuit can be forced online by pressing the module's front panel SELECT pushbutton with a fine tipped tool or a pencil. A typical in-service patch is illustrated in Figure 3-21 and described in Section 7 of this manual. Caution: In-service patching at DSX-3 circuit modules may result in a momentary hit that will cause reframes. These are usually short enough to avoid loss of service. Data transmission may be affected; therefore, proper precautions should be taken when circuit patching is required.
