I'm not convinced that the statement in the last sentence is accurate for all requirements associated with the application of newer editions of a standard.

4 A.1.4 It is the intent of the committee to recognize that future editions of this standard are a further refinement of this edition and earlier editions. The changes in future editions will reflect the continuing input of the fire protection community in its attempt to meet the purpose stated in this standard. Compliance with all requirements of a future edition could be considered as providing an equivalent level of system integrity and performance of the system.

For fire protection purposes, A system that consists of an integrated system of underground and overhead network of piping designed in accordance with fire protection engineering standards. The installation that includes one or more automatic a water supplies supply source, a water control valve, and a drain. The portion of the sprinkler system above ground is a network of specially specifically sized or hydraulically designed piping installed in a building, structure, or area, generally overhead, and to which sprinklers are attached in a systematic pattern. The system is usually commonly activated by heat from a fire and discharges water over the fire area. Although PI #35 specifically addresses section 6.1.5, the only other mention of an automatic water supply was in this section. This definition of a sprinkler system is extracted from NFPA 13 and doesn't include the term "automatic". However, it can't be a straight extract since NFPA 13D doesn't require a water flow alarm. A specific example of an unlisted hanger that has been witnessed to fail is the talon clamp with nail. This hanger clamp has a lower melting point than the required sprinkler head activation temperature and actually caused an entire section of the system piping to collapse, rendering the sprinkler system ineffective. If listed hangers are required, this potential hazard can be avoided with little impact to the overall system cost, in keeping with the intent of the standard to provide affordable protection from fire for residents of one- and two-family dwellings. Van Walraven, Ed Victor, Terry L. Viola, John F. Webb, Ronald N. Affirmative with Comment Asp, Roland A. Although I agree with FR-47 which will outline components that do not need to be listed in a list, the substantiation for this FR appears to be incorrect as it it is calling for hangers to be listed and hangers are not required to be listed per this FR. Bell, Kerry M. The new text in addressed in First Revision 16 indicates that nonmetallic hangers intended for use with exposed piping are required to be listed. The new introduces a correlation issue with since this section appears to allow for the use of non-listed hangers in all situations.

20 17 of /7/2016 1:02 PM Deegan, Thomas G. I agree with the intent of the changes to this section. However, the committee statement appears to be inconsistent with the text of It comments on reasons why hangers should be listed while the text identifies that hangers do not need to be listed. Skare, Eric J. The committee statement isn't appropriate for the changes made in this first revision. Public Input #56 intended to remove hangers from the exempt list, and this action wasn't taken. The substantive change was to include piping from remove water supplies and the rest of the change is basically editorial converting the items to a list. Negative with Comment Nickelson, David A. The original intention of Public Input No. 56 was to remove Hangers from the listed of items not requiring listing in The committee revised this section without removing Hangers. The committee statement on this change would indicate that hangers do need to be listed and therefore should be removed from the exemption for listing in section Yu, Hong-Zeng The committee statement indicates that low quality pipe hangers can render sprinkler systems ineffective. But the hanger is included in the list of non-listed components. Furthermore, FR No. 16 requires that hangers should be listed for certain applications.

FEMA uses this arrangement when providing sprinkler systems for many of their manufactured housing units. This arrangement could also be used when retrofitting an existing dwelling or home. By doing this, bedrooms and other similar sized rooms can be protected with a single sprinkler. It is not uncommon for the single sprinkler compartments to be designed at 20'x20' spacing, with a 20 gpm flow, and the multiple sprinkler compartments to be designed to 12'x12' spacing with a 16 gpm flow for a two-sprinkler calculation. There was no intent to eliminate this allowance as long as the sprinkler was within its normal allowable distance from the ceiling. The requirement for a door on the compartment opening was only intended to apply when the sprinkler deflector is installed as much as 18 inches down from the ceiling. The requirements have been clarified so that the door is only necessary now for the 18 inch distance, returning to the intent of the 2013 edition.
