Lidar deployed on board of Hurtigruten s MS Midnatsol
Oil pollution discovered Findings from MS Midnatsol 30th October 2015 : pollution near Gautøya, 4.1 ppm, light oil.
Lidar on board of ice breaker Sampo, Kemi Arctic 2015
Tests in icy waters OWL on board of ice breaker Sampo Tests in collaboration with Finnish Environmental Institute, Syke Test took place during the Arctic Oil Recovery Exercise 2015 in Kemi, Gulf of Bothnia, Finland The Lidar was tested in different ice conditions for real time measurements: between ice floes, broken ice, ice slush and solid ice during 12 km test path Some water contamination by marine diesel (2-5 ppm) was detected in the port area both in water and in ice floes Conclusion: The OWL has been tested in real conditions in Arctic waters and is effectively operated in harsh environmental conditions like low temperature and strong wind. The tests confirmed that the HLIF LiDAR is able to provide information on water quality, including oil detection, in icy waters at different ice conditions.

Lightweight HLIF LiDAR for aerial operation Development of HLIF LiDAR as a payload of Unmenned Aerial Vechicle (UAV) or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Combined use of HLIF LiDAR with SAR and other aerial sensors Parties in dialogue: Airbus D&S, Norut APPLICATIONS Environmental surveillance Operations in harsh environment (Arctics) Oil spill response management
OWL product Summary Real-time data feed for early warning of oil spills, available 24/7 Classifies type of oil Measures the thickness of the oil on water Detects oil under the water surface (submerged oil) down to 3 m in the water column Operates in complete darkness Operates in harsh weather conditions Parts per million (ppm) measurement sensitivity level, if needed Complete solution: oil detector and software Detects oil between the ice floes and ice slush, thus suitable for Arctic conditions No false alarms due to the fact that OWL detects oil specifically by sensing direct light response induced by laser beam hitting oil molecules in water
