Hydrants shall be visible and accessible from the required access road. All combustible framing must be kept within 150 feet of an acceptable access road serviced with active fire hydrants. An acceptable fire access road shall have a minimum clear width of 26 feet and a vertical clearance of 13 feet, 6 inches, be an all weather paved surface and support a 75,000-pound fire apparatus. After the hydrant location plans are approved, the engineered underground supply piping plans, with hydrants shown at the approved locations, are required to be plan checked and approved prior to installation. The installation is inspected by the City of Oxnard Public Works Department. All hydrants shall be Public Hydrants located in a public right-of-way or City of Oxnard easement and maintained by the City of Oxnard Public Works Department. Private and System Side Hydrants are not allowed in The City of Oxnard. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS All new hydrants shall be 6" wet barrel with National Standard Thread, NST outlets. 2 A sufficient number of hydrants shall be installed to concentrate the required fire flow within 400' of any structure. Hydrants shall be placed at least 50' from the structure being protected. Where this is not possible, they shall be placed where the possibility of injury from building collapse is limited. Installation locations shall be approved by the Fire Prevention Bureau. Any changes or relocation of fire hydrants from the approved hydrant location plan shall be approved by the Fire Prevention Bureau prior to installation or relocation. Streets with medians of more than four lanes of traffic shall have hydrants placed on each side of the median so that fire lines will not have to cross the street. Tactical considerations may require additional hydrants and will be considered on a project-by project basis. Onsite hydrants shall not be connected to the fire sprinkler system. When any portion of a building is more than 150 feet from a fire hydrant provided on a public street, onsite hydrants capable of providing the required fire flow will be required. Residential A spacing requirement of 500 feet with no structure more than 300 feet from a hydrant. Multiple family residential spacing is 300 feet with no structure more than 200 feet from a hydrant. Industrial and Commercial A spacing requirement of 300 feet and located so that no structure is more than 150 feet from multiple outlet hydrants (onsite hydrants are included). Schools California Fire Code Appendix C shall be used to determine distance/spacing, and number of hydrants. The State Fire Marshal (SFM) requires the Division of State Architect (DSA) to request water and access requirements and approval from the local jurisdiction. Private schools shall comply with all the requirements for commercial buildings. Local requirements are applicable to private schools. NOTE: Fire flows listed are guidelines and specific projects may require different fire flows depending on occupancy, size, and construction of a particular building. Fire flow for a project will be based on the largest building within the project. Be aware that the City Water Department has reduced the city water pressure during periods of conservation. A Fire Protection Engineer may be required to assist us with your project.

6 Fire hydrants shall be painted yellow. Prior to occupancy of any structure, fire hydrant locations shall be clearly identified by the installation of blue reflective markers in the middle of the street in accordance with Fire Department standards. If the final asphalt cap is not in place at the time final occupancy is desired, the hydrant markers shall still be installed and replaced when the final asphalt cap is completed..

ACCESS POINT: An approved access is required for all new buildings and shall reach to a point (Access Point) within 150 feet of all exterior areas of each building. CBC: California Building Code, California Code of Regulations Title 24, Part 2 CFC: California Fire Code CFC Appendix B: Fire-Flow Requirements for Buildings. EXISTING PARCELS: Parcels (or lots) that were legally divided prior to October 1, FLOOR AREA: The area included within the surrounding exterior walls of a building or portion thereof, exclusive of vent shafts and courts. The floor area of a building, or portion thereof, not provided with surrounding exterior walls shall be the usable area under the horizontal projection of the roof or floor above. Ref: CBC FIRE FLOW: The flow rate of a water supply, measured at 20 pounds per square inch (PSI) (137.9kPa) residual pressure that is available for firefighting. FIRE AREA: The total floor area, in ft 2, used to determine the required fire flow. LOCAL ORDINANCE: Amendments to the CFC adopted by City of Oxnard. NFPA 13: National Fire Protection Association, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. OCCUPANCY TYPE: The purpose for which a building or part thereof is used or intended to be used, as determined by Chapter 3, CBC. PUBLIC HYDRANT/ON-SITE HYDRANT: Maintained by City of Oxnard Public Works Department in the public right-of-way or City of Oxnard easement. PRIVATE HYDRANT: Located on private property and not within the City of Oxnard Public Works Department s easement. Not allowed. SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING (SFD): One and two family dwellings, including attached or detached private garages. SYSTEM SIDE HYDRANT (or YARD HYDRANT): Connected to underground piping between the Fire Department Connection (FDC) and the sprinkler riser of a fire sprinkler system. Not allowed. TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION: Determined from Chapter 6 of the CBC.
