1 SECTION FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. Section includes labor and materials for the installation of a hydraulically calculated automatic, wet-pipe sprinkler system(s) and pre-action sprinkler systems in areas as specified, and as shown on the Drawings, complete in all respects and ready for operation. 1. Work includes the design of an automatic sprinkler system, complete and ready for operation. 2. Design and installation of the sprinkler system shall be such that no parts interfere with general construction, doors, windows, heating, plumbing, air conditioning systems or electrical equipment. B. System components for each zone shall include, but not be limited to: 1. Zone control valve and test/drain assembly. 2. Drain valve. 3. Waterflow switches. 4. Valve supervisory switches. 5. Piping. 6. Sprinkler heads SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. The automatic sprinkler system shall be fixed water type or pre-action type fire protection sprinkler system with piping supply to fusible sprinkler heads for control of fire. B. The sprinkler system shall be designed to meet the more stringent of the requirements of NFPA 13 and FM Global requirements. C. All sprinkler heads in general shall be in a straight line, parallel to the lines of the building and shall be located in the approximate center of ceiling tiles. 1. Sprinkler head quantities, where shown, are the minimum, which must be provided. If additional heads are required to meet NFPA 13, the location of additional heads must be approved by the Architect. 2. Contractor shall submit Sprinkler Head locations to the Architect for location and type approval prior to completing the sprinkler system design, unless otherwise instructed, in writing, by the Architect. D. Work shall be installed in accordance with the Drawings, Specifications and FM Global. Devices and equipment shall be listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. or Factory Mutual-approved, individually and as a system, as applicable. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

2 E. Sprinkler heads shall be spaced, located, and positioned as shown on the Architectural reflected ceiling plans, where shown, as specified and as required to suit the building partition layout according to Sections 8.5 and Section 8.6 of NFPA 13. F. Piping sizes and configurations shall be on the basis of hydraulic calculations. Where head layouts shown on the Drawings or requirements specified are more stringent than NFPA requirements, the more stringent requirements shall apply. G. Zone the wet-pipe sprinkler system with a maximum 52,000 sq. ft. area limitation per zone. H. Coordinate the location of sprinkler heads and piping such that it does not interfere with the installed ceiling configuration or other building construction and equipment HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS A. Prepare hydraulic calculations in accordance with Chapter 22 of NFPA 13 and FM Global with the following exceptions: 1. Pipe frictions losses may be calculated by using the nearest foot for all piping over one foot in length. Vertical length less than one foot shall be included for elevation purposes only. 2. Calculate flows to the nearest whole gallon. 3. Velocities in underground piping shall not exceed 16 feet per second. Velocities in all other piping shall not exceed 20 feet per second. Velocities in standpipes must be calculated based on the combined sprinkler flow and hose flow. 4. Total sprinkler system flow shall not exceed 110 percent of the required flow. 5. Provide a minimum safety factor of 10 percent on all hydraulically calculated sprinkler systems. B. Sprinkler system hydraulic calculations shall be based on the following: 1. Offices, Conference Rooms, Entries, Hallways, Multipurpose Rooms, Classrooms, Assembly Areas, Junior Surgery, Common Areas and Similar Areas: FM Global Hazard Category HC1 with design density of 0.10 gpm over the most remote 1500 square foot, with a maximum coverage area, per head, of 225 square foot 2. Storage Rooms, Mechanical Rooms, Communication Rooms, Kitchen (Food Prep), Loading Dock, Chemical Storage Rooms, Future Kitchen, Laboratories such a Microbiology, Pathology, etc. and Janitor Rooms,: FM Global Hazard Category HC2 with a design density of 0.20 gpm over the most remote 2,500 square foot with a maximum head coverage of 130 square foot per head Provide dry pipe sprinkler coverage for the Attic space in Building 1812 as indicated on the Plumbing drawings. The attic space sprinkler sprinkler system shall be hydraulically designed based on FM Global Hazard Category HC2 with a design density of 0.20 gpm over the most remote 3500 square feet with a maximum head coverage of 130 square foot per head Provide 250 gpm hose stream allowance Maximum spacing between heads of 15-foot on center. 3 C. Hydraulic calculations shall be performed by a State of Texas Licensed Responsible Managing Employee (RME) in the direct employ of the fire protection contractor. D. Hydraulic Calculations shall be based on flow test conducted by this contractor or flow test information provided by the Owner. This Contractor is responsible for basing the hydraulic calculations on the most current conditions. The flow test information furnished from the Owner (TAMU) in December 2012 is as follows: Located at flow Hydrant #245 and Residual Hydrant #246, located southwest corner of Vet Medicine, static pressure 80 psi, residual pressure of 74 psi at 1389 gpm SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. B. Shop Drawings: Provide total hydraulically designed sprinkler system with plans, elevations, sections, details, and related attachments including Wiring Diagrams for power, signal, and control wiring. C. All submittals shall be provided to FM Global and A/E for review and approval prior to any work. D. Delegated-Design Submittal: For sprinkler systems indicated to comply with performance requirements and design criteria, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation. E. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer and Professional Engineer. F. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction, FM Global, including hydraulic calculations if applicable. G. Welding certificates. H. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping." I. Field quality-control reports. J. Operation and maintenance data QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: 1. Installer's responsibilities include designing, fabricating, and installing sprinkler systems and providing professional engineering services needed to assume engineering responsibility. Base calculations on results of fire-hydrant flow test. a. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified professional engineer. 4 B. Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. D. NFPA Standards: Sprinkler system equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing shall comply with the following: 1. NFPA 13, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems." 2. NFPA 13R, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies up to and Including Four Stories in Height." 3. NFPA 24, "Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances." PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 SPRINKLERS A. Approved Manufacturers: Viking, Victaulic, Tyco or Reliable. B. Unless otherwise specified, sprinkler heads shall be a quick response type with standard (155 F) temperature rated fusible link, 1/2 inch orifice and a 5.6 K factor. 1. Heads located within the air streams of heat emitting equipment and serving Elevator Machine Rooms, Elevator Shafts and Boiler Rooms shall have a intermediate (200 F) temperature rated fusible link. 2. Install corrosion-resistant sprinkler heads where they are exposed to weather, moisture, or corrosive vapors. 3. Heads installed where they might receive mechanical injury or are less than 7 feet above the floor level shall be protected with approved guards in accordance with Section of NFPA Sprinklers in areas with suspended ceilings shall have pipe and fittings located above the suspended ceiling. 5. Sprinkler heads in finished areas, with ceilings, shall be Quick Response concealed type sprinkler head, manufactured by Victaulic Model V38 or approved equivalent. All concealed heads shall have white finish, except in wood ceilings where a factory painted custom dark brown finish shall be provided. 6. Sprinkler heads in Junior Surgery and Anesthesia Prep shall be a concealed gasketed type sprinkler heads consisting of a dust tight seal, manufactured by Reliable Model G4FR, or approved equal. C. Sprinkler heads in unfinished areas shall be Quick Response upright or sidewall with a brass finish, manufactured by Viking Microfast Model VK300 or approved equivalent. D. Provide concealed type dry type sprinkler head with white finish and escutcheon, to protect freezers, manufactured by Victaulic Model V36 dry pendant or approved equal. Provide recessed horizontal dry sidewall pendant sprinklers to protect outside areas as indicated on the plumbing plans, such as Loading Docks and areas where storage will occur under roofed areas, manufactured by Victaulic Model V3609 Dry Horizontal Sidewall pendant or approved equal. F. Sprinkler heads shall be UL Listed and FM approved. G. Provide metal cabinet containing a stock of spare sprinkler heads of all types and ratings installed. 1. Locate cabinet where temperature will not exceed 100 F. 2. Location shall be approved by the Owner. 3. Number of spare sprinklers shall conform to Section of NFPA Provide a sprinkler wrench in the cabinet, for each different type sprinkler head. H. Provide Sprinklers to serve Electrical Rooms. I. The use of extended coverage type heads is not allowed VALVE SUPERVISORY SWITCHES A. Contractor shall furnish and install supervisory switches. Coordinate wiring of switches with Division 26 Electrical Sections WATERFLOW SWITCHES A. Waterflow pressure switches shall be furnished and installed by this Contractor and wired under provisions of Division 26 Electrical Sections. Coordinate wiring of flow switches with Division 26 Electrical Sections BUILDING FIRE ALARM SYSTEM INTERFACE A. Each zone control assembly shall provide an alarm signal output to the Building Fire Alarm System whenever there is waterflow in the zone. Coordinate with Division 28 Electronic Safety and Security Sections. B. Each valve which controls the flow of sprinkler system water shall be monitored by the Building Fire Alarm System. Coordinate with Division 28 Electronic Safety and Security Sections SPRINKLER ALARM CHECK VALVE ASSEMBLY A. Provide 175 psi rated automatic sprinkler valve with one or two pole (as required) flow detectors, pressure switch, outside water monitor gong, retard chamber, and associated trim for a complete working system. B. Provide products manufactured by Reliable (Mode E1), Viking (Model J-1) or approved equivalent. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

6 2.06 SPRINKLER SYSTEM INSPECTOR S TEST ASSEMBLY A. Provide NFPA 13 compliant UL Listed and FM approved sprinkler system inspector s test assembly, consisting of sight glass, tamper resistant test orifice, test and drain ball valve, rated for 300 psi, size indicated on the plumbing plans, manufactured by AGF Model 1000, or approved equal PRE-ACTION SPRINKLER SYSTEM A. General: Provide a double interlock type pre-action sprinkler system assembly for the Server Room in Building Refer to Plumbing Floor Plans for location. The system shall consist of deluge valve, air compressor, control panel, electrical cross-zoned smoke detectors and all other components for a complete NFPA 13 compliant packaged system. The piping system will be pressurized with compressed air and the sprinkler heads shall be the type specified for the building s wet sprinkler system. Manufactured by Victaulic Firelock NXT Series 769, or approved equal. B. Sequence of Operation: 1. Normal Operation System acts as a dry pipe type system with compressed air in piping system and water on inlet side of deluge valve. 2. Activation of single smoke detector Control panel activates fire alarm devices and latches the solenoid releasing valve in the open position. (First Alarm) 3. Activation of two smoke detectors Control panel energizes the solenoid valve open and releases the deluge valve to allow water to fill the piping system, and alarm signal to fire alarm system. (Second Alarm) 4. Sprinkler Head Activation Sprinkler head fusible link activation, which allows water to flow from only from activated sprinkler head. C. Components: 1. Deluge Valve with Trim: With bronze seat, UL listed, FM approved, with wet pilot trim kit, check valve, waterflow pressure switch. Trim set shall include gauge, manual emergency station. Unit shall have low differential latched clapper design with black enamel coated ductile iron body conforming to ASTM A-536 Grade , with aluminum bronze clapper, stainless steel spring and shaft, peroxide cured EPDM diaphragm, EPDM seal, brass seat, and nitrile seat o-rings. Valve internal parts shall be replaceable without removing the valve from the installed position. Valve shall be externally resettable. Valve shall not require a separate check valve downstream. 2. Control Panel: Releasing control panel shall include 90-hour battery backup, audible alarm, manual reset to alarms, visual alarm, dry contacts for signal to building s fire alarm system, battery charger, standby batteries, rectifier circuit breaker, UL Listed, single phase 120-volt power requirement, complete with air compressor motor starter and with disconnect switch. Wiring between the preaction panel and air compressor is the responsibility of this contractor. Manufactured by Victaulic Model PDRP-2001 or approved equal. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

7 3. Smoke Detectors: Photoelectric type smoke detector, cross-zoned arrangement. L.E.D. pulses at 10-second intervals, UL listed, off-white finish, 2-wire, three level detection. Manufactured by System Sensor Model 4W-B, 4WT-B or approved equal. 4. Manual Emergency Station: Electrically powered, non-break glass station with a test reset key, semi-flush mounted on single gang conduit box, operated by pull on cover, UL listed and FM approved, 120-volt single phase, 2-pole. Manufactured by Victaulic Series 755 or approved equal. 5. Air Compressor for Pre-action system: Tank mounted electrically powered air compressor, consisting of 1/2 HP oil-less permanently lubricated, direct drive with air filter, UL listed, with safety relief valve mounted on 2 gallon horizontal ASME coded steel air receiver and associated trim, required for pre-action system. Compressor shall be provided with all trim and components, for capability of furnishing compressed air to pre-action system, with deluge valve, detectors, etc. Manufactured by Victaulic Model 7C7 with Victaulic Series 757P air maintenance device or approved equal. D. Installation: This contractor shall be responsible for complete design, layout and installation of a pre-action sprinkler system in compliance with NFPA 13 and NFPA 72. This contractor shall be responsible for all wiring and conduit required between control panel, smoke detectors, pull station, air compressor, and all other system components for a complete operational system. All electrical work shall be coordinated with Division 26 and shall be in compliance with Division 26 specifications DRY PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEM A. General: Provide a dry pipe sprinkler system with all necessary components to protect the spaces indicated on the Plumbing Drawings. B. Dry Pipe Valve. Provide UL listed and FM approved dry pipe valve (Viking Model No. F-1, or approved equal) and appurtenances where shown on the Plumbing drawings. Equip and connect as required by NFPA 13. Provide valve and trim with positive latching clapper, including priming chambers (as required), water and air pressure gauges, priming water level indicator, alarm test bypass and accelerator. Include all necessary pipe fittings and accessories to provide a complete dry pipe Sprinkler System. Components shall be rated for a minimum 175 psi working pressure, with a low pressure supervisory alarm (low air pressure switch) & water flow alarm (alarm pressure switch) for fire alarm system, coordinate with Division 26. A quick opening device, manufactured by Victaulic No. NXT Series 768, or approved equal. C. Air Maintenance Device. Provide air maintenance device consisting of unloader valve, bypass valve, shut-off valves, strainer, pressure switch check valve, restriction nipple, with 120 volt single phase power requirement, with adjustable pressure rating of 14 to 60 psi, with regulator and gauge, manufactured by Victaulic No. 757P, or approved equal. 8 D. Air Compressor. Provide oil-free air compressor for dry pipe sprinkler system applications, permanently lubricated, direct drive, riser mounted type, air filter, safety relief valve set at 50 psi, UL listed, 1/2 HP, 120 volt, 1-phase power requirement. Air compressor shall be either pipe mounted or floor mounted. Manufactured by Victaulic No. 7C7 or approved equal. E. Sequence of Operation. Under normal conditions the supply line to the closed type sprinkler heads is filled with compressed air, which holds the dry pipe valve in the closed position. Under any sprinkler head activation the compressed air in the piping system is released and the system fills with water. Water is discharged through the activated sprinkler head. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 PIPING INSTALLATION A. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with Architect before deviating from approved working plans. B. Piping Standard: Comply with requirements for installation of sprinkler piping in NFPA 13. C. Use listed fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. D. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. E. Install flanges, flange adapters, or couplings for grooved-end piping on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger end connections. F. Install "Inspector's Test Connections" in sprinkler system piping, complete with shutoff valve, and sized and located according to NFPA 13. G. Install sprinkler piping with drains for complete system drainage. H. Install sprinkler control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers adjacent to standpipes when sprinkler piping is connected to standpipes. I. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for fire-department connection, to drain piping between fire-department connection and check valve. Install drain piping to and spill over floor drain or to outside building. J. Install alarm devices in piping systems. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

9 K. Install hangers and supports for sprinkler system piping according to NFPA 13. Comply with requirements for hanger materials in NFPA 13. L. Install pressure gages on riser or feed main, at each sprinkler test connection, and at top of each standpipe. Include pressure gages with connection not less than NPS 1/4 and with soft metal seated globe valve, arranged for draining pipe between gage and valve. Install gages to permit removal, and install where they will not be subject to freezing. M. Fill sprinkler wet system piping with water. N. In rooms with servers do not locate sprinkler heads directly over servers. O. In areas with wood ceilings, provide sprinkler heads in the ceiling and above the ceiling in compliance with NFPA JOINT CONSTRUCTION A. Install couplings, flanges, flanged fittings, unions, nipples, and transition and special fittings that have finish and pressure ratings same as or higher than system's pressure rating for aboveground applications unless otherwise indicated. B. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. C. Install flanges, flange adapters, or couplings for grooved-end piping on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger end connections. D. Ream ends of pipes and tubes and remove burrs. Bevel plain ends of steel pipe. E. Remove scale, slag, dirt, and debris from inside and outside of pipes, tubes, and fittings before assembly. F. Flanged Joints: Select appropriate gasket material in size, type, and thickness suitable for water service. Join flanges with gasket and bolts according to ASME B31.9. G. Threaded Joints: Thread pipe with tapered pipe threads according to ASME B Cut threads full and clean using sharp dies. Ream threaded pipe ends to remove burrs and restore full ID. Join pipe fittings and valves as follows: 1. Apply appropriate tape or thread compound to external pipe threads. 2. Damaged Threads: Do not use pipe or pipe fittings with threads that are corroded or damaged. H. Twist-Locked Joints: Insert plain end of steel pipe into plain-end-pipe fitting. Rotate retainer lugs one-quarter turn or tighten retainer pin. I. Steel-Piping, Pressure-Sealed Joints: Join lightwall steel pipe and steel pressure-seal fittings with tools recommended by fitting manufacturer. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

10 J. Welded Joints: Construct joints according to AWS D10.12M/D10.12, using qualified processes and welding operators according to "Quality Assurance" Article. 1. Shop weld pipe joints where welded piping is indicated. Do not use welded joints for galvanized-steel pipe. K. Steel-Piping, Cut-Grooved Joints: Cut square-edge groove in end of pipe according to AWWA C606. Assemble coupling with housing, gasket, lubricant, and bolts. Join steel pipe and grooved-end fittings according to AWWA C606 for steel-pipe joints. L. Steel-Piping, Roll-Grooved Joints: Roll rounded-edge groove in end of pipe according to AWWA C606. Assemble coupling with housing, gasket, lubricant, and bolts. Join steel pipe and grooved-end fittings according to AWWA C606 for steel-pipe grooved joints. M. Steel-Piping, Pressure-Sealed Joints: Join Schedule 5 steel pipe and steel pressureseal fittings with tools recommended by fitting manufacturer. N. Dissimilar-Material Piping Joints: Make joints using adapters compatible with materials of both piping systems. O. No welded joints and/or outlets are allowed on the pre-action piping system VALVE AND SPECIALTIES INSTALLATION A. Install listed fire-protection valves, trim and drain valves, specialty valves and trim, controls, and specialties according to NFPA 13 and authorities having jurisdiction. B. Install listed fire-protection shutoff valves supervised open, located to control sources of water supply except from fire-department connections. Install permanent identification signs indicating portion of system controlled by each valve. C. Specialty Valves: 1. General Requirements: Install in vertical position for proper direction of flow, in main supply to system. 2. Alarm Valves: Include bypass check valve and retarding chamber drain-line connection SPRINKLER INSTALLATION A. Install sprinklers in suspended ceilings in center of acoustical ceiling panels. B. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for fire-department connection. C. Coordinate the location of sprinkler system piping around all other trades, such as HVAC, plumbing and electrical, prior to installation. D. Provide sprinkler protection for all electrical equipment rooms, unless otherwise indicated. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

11 E. Do not route any sprinkler system components through electrical equipment rooms, unless they serve that room. F. The supply line for individual sprinkler heads located in suspended ceilings shall be tapped off the top of the branch lines (return bend). Piping serving individual sprinkler heads located in suspended ceilings shall not be supplied off the bottom of branch lines. Refer to plumbing drawings for detail. G. In exposed areas with ductwork 48 and wider, provide sprinkler heads both above and below ductwork as outlined in NFPA 13. H. Provide sprinkler heads both above and in ceilings constructed of wood, as required by NFPA ESCUTCHEON INSTALLATION A. Install escutcheons for penetrations of walls, ceilings, and floors SLEEVE INSTALLATION A. General Requirements: Install sleeves for pipes and tubes passing through penetrations in floors, partitions, roofs, and walls. B. Sleeves are not required for core-drilled holes. C. Permanent sleeves are not required for holes formed by removable PE sleeves. D. Cut sleeves to length for mounting flush with both surfaces unless otherwise indicated. E. Install sleeves in new partitions, slabs, and walls as they are built. F. For interior wall penetrations, seal annular space between sleeve and pipe or pipe insulation using joint sealants appropriate for size, depth, and location of joint. Comply with requirements for joint sealants in Division 07 Section, Joint Sealants. G. For exterior wall penetrations above grade, seal annular space between sleeve and pipe using joint sealants appropriate for size, depth, and location of joint. Comply with requirements for joint sealants in Division 07 Section, Joint Sealants. H. For exterior wall penetrations below grade, seal annular space between sleeve and pipe using sleeve seals. I. Seal space outside of sleeves in concrete slabs and walls with grout. J. Fire-Barrier Penetrations: Maintain indicated fire rating of walls, partitions, ceilings, and floors at pipe penetrations. Seal pipe penetrations with firestop materials. Comply with requirements for firestop materials and installations in Division 07 Section, Penetration Firestopping. FIRE PROTECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

12 3.07 SLEEVE SEAL INSTALLATION A. Install sleeve seals in sleeves in exterior concrete walls at water-service piping entries into building. B. Select type and number of sealing elements required for pipe material and size. Position pipe in center of sleeve. Assemble sleeve seal components and install in annular space between pipe and sleeve. Tighten bolts against pressure plates that cause sealing elements to expand and make watertight seal IDENTIFICATION A. Install labeling and pipe markers on equipment and piping according to requirements in NFPA 13. B. Identify system components, wiring, cabling, and terminals. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Section , Electrical Identification FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform tests and inspections. B. Tests and Inspections: 1. Leak Test: After installation, charge systems and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until no leaks exist. 2. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and equipment. 3. Flush, test, and inspect sprinkler systems according to NFPA 13, "Systems Acceptance" Chapter. 4. Energize circuits to electrical equipment and devices. 5. Start and run excess-pressure pumps. 6. Coordinate with fire-alarm tests. Operate as required. 7. Coordinate with fire-pump tests.
