1 ADMINISTRATOR S WEEKLY REPORT # August 3 rd through 9 th, 2015 CALLS FOR SERVICE This Week 2015 YTD YTD Change Fire % Aid % Other % Total % Last Week: Administrator Robertson met with the police chiefs from Auburn and Pacific to discuss issues of mutual interest on Tuesday, August 4 th. Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, August 4 th at Headquarters Station 31. The crews participated in the National Night Out events scheduled in their response areas on Tuesday, August 4 th. This Week: Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, August 11 th Headquarters Station 31. at The monthly meeting of the Civil Service Commission will be held on Tuesday, August 11 th at Auburn City Hall. On Tuesday, August 11 th, the Finance Committee and Board of Governance will hold their monthly meetings at Headquarters Station 31. Administrator Robertson will attend the Washington Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee meeting on Wednesday, August 12 th in Olympia. Command Staff will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, August 13 th Headquarters Station 31. at 1

2 The VRFA will participate in the Auburn Days celebration on Saturday, August 15 th in downtown Auburn. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Algona) On Monday, August 3 rd firefighters responded to an elderly male who was short of breath. The man was treated by firefighters and transported by private ambulance to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC). Brush Fire: (Lea Hill) On Tuesday, August 4 th at 6:55 p.m., firefighters responded with Brush 34 to a reported brush fire at the base of a large oak tree at the Adventist Academy. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze using brush tools and foam preventing it from spreading to the tree. This was the inaugural brush response of the newly purchased Brush 34. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Wednesday, August 5 th at 5:15 p.m., firefighters were requested by Auburn police for a medical evaluation of an injured female. Personnel examined the patient and found only minor injuries and she was able to remain on scene with APD. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Thursday, August 6 th at 2:34 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to assist a teenage male who had accidently cut himself with a knife. Crews treated the patient and then had him transported to a local hospital via private ambulance. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Friday, August 7 th, at 9:30 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult female that fell on the sidewalk. Firefighters treated the patient at the scene and after an evaluation it was determined that the patient needed further treatment and was taken to a local area hospital by private ambulance. Fire Alarm: (Auburn) On Saturday, August 8 th at 9:42 a.m., firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm at Auburn Senior High School. Firefighters found a sprinkler head on the outside mezzanine of the gymnasium had broken and was flowing water. The crew shut down the sprinkler system, and worked with onsite contractors to get the system restored. Illegal Burn: (Auburn) On Sunday, August 9 th at 9:05 p.m., firefighters were called to investigate a possible illegal burn. Firefighters arrived on the shores of the Green River and found three separate recreational fires. The involved parties were asked to extinguish their fires and they were also educated on burning regulations. 2

3 Training Division Activities: Year Weekly Year to Date 9,356 11,061 Water Rescue Drill: Zone 3 water rescue technicians and rescue swimmers gathered at Angel Lake to practice and test our rescue deployment model. Rescue swimmers, trained to identify last scene points of drowning victims and perform shallow water rescues, worked with local life guards and dive teams (VRFA and Renton) in a drowning scenario to test their skills. This deployment model is designed to have trained rescuers on scene quickly that can proactively evaluate, search and prepare the scene prior to SCUBA rescuers arriving. Pump Simulation Training: The VRFA, B Shift, participated in pump simulation training on Monday. This training utilizes a computer controlled pump simulation machine that allows the instructor to create pumping situations that are common at most structure fires. Using this machine gives the SKCFTC the ability to provide hydraulics training to a large number of drivers without pulling hose or spraying water. Zone 3 Truck Training: Truck companies within Zone 3 gathered to practice forcible entry, ventilation and search techniques. These tasks are specific to truck operations on the fireground. Truck companies from Zone 3 practice these skills together once every quarter. Fire Marshal s Office: Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections Certified Fire Inspectors completed 0 business safety inspections this week. 5 Public Education A Fire Stoppers intervention and education session was conducted for a 14 yearold boy at the request of the parent. Two young girls were referred to the Fire Stoppers program following a grass and tree fire. PIEO staff contacted their parents and are attempting to schedule intervention/education sessions. PIEO Staff began editing content for the October edition of Fire Watch. A Facebook and Twitter post was completed regarding National Night Out. Engine 32 visited King County Public Health for a community event. Fire Investigation There were 4 incidents requiring the services of the Fire Investigation Unit this week. On Tuesday, August 4 th, a fire occurred in natural vegetation at the intersection of SE 310 th and 124 th Ave in the City of Auburn. The fire was quickly confined to the arbor vitae and no structures were involved. Dollar loss is estimated to be $150. On Wednesday, August 5 th, a fire involving natural vegetation and 2 transient camps in the area of Auburn Black Diamond Road and Highway 18 occurred. The fire cause is classified as undetermined due to no witnesses or identifiable belongings. Two separate campfires appeared to have been present in the camps. On Thursday, August 6 th, a fire occurred inside an empty paper recycle bin next to a single family residence at 1631 Riverview Drive NE, in the City of Auburn. The fire was confined to the item of origin with no extension to the nearby residence. Dollar loss is estimated at $100. On Saturday, August 8 th, a fire occurred inside an unoccupied passenger vehicle near Auburn Way South and Cross St. The vehicle was stationary at the time of the fire. The fire was classified as incendiary and is under investigation. Planning and Logistics P&L received five apparatus and two facility/small tool maintenance requests. 5

6 Planning and Logistics is preparing 2016 budget items. Captain Rodriguez is continuing to develop an inventory for Brush 34, which will become the standard for brush response tools and equipment, including PPE. Captain Thompson is continuing to develop long term, supportable decontamination planning for response personnel. BC Larberg attended a community response course at the National Fire Academy. 6
