2 Strand Lighting Emergency Transfer Cabinets are a cost effective range of fully UL tested automatic transfer switches. They are designed for applications where power to critical lighting circuits must be maintained during a loss of "normal" power, to maintain adequate safety illumination. In a typical application, the Emergency Transfer Cabinets sense the "normal" supply voltage of the dimmer rack (via a fused "phase loss" kit installed in the dimmer rack) and automatically transfers the load circuits directly to the "emergency" power feed(s) when a phase failure is detected. When the "normal" supply is restored, the load circuits are transferred back to the dimming system automatically. The power transfer relays have both electrical and mechanical interlocks for maximum safety and reliability. Emergency Transfer Cabinets are available in 2, 4, 6, or 8 (20) amp load circuits for single phase 2-wire or three phase 4-wire 120/208 volt emergency power feeds. 3-phase cabinets include a 20A branch breaker for each load circuit. The Strand Lighting Emergency Transfer Cabinets conforms to the United States National Electric Code Articles , 700, and 701, and are Underwriters Laboratories listed and evaluated to the UL1008 standard for safety. Installation 1.) Mount the transfer panel on a sturdy, flat wall surface. Eliminate any irregularities in the surface before mounting the panel to protect it from possible distortion. Allow enough room in front of the cabinet to fully open the hinged front panel. Do not mount the cabinet under pipes carrying liquids. 2.) Make wire connections according to the system riser and wiring diagrams. "Normal" feed and load terminals accept up to #8 AWG wires. 3-phase "emergency" feed terminals accept up to #2/0 wires. 3.) Check the control fuse block to make sure that all three (3) fuses are secure in their holders. 4.) Make sure that the cabinet is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and construction dust. 5.) 3 6.) Simulate a "normal" source power failure by triggering the momentary test switch using a jeweler's screwdriver or similar device inserted in the test switch hole. The 3/16" diameter hole for accessing the test switch is located on the lower side of the cabinet. "Emergency" source power must be ON when you do this test. Operation/Application Each Automatic Transfer Panel consists of two mechanically interlocked contactors, which operate with a pilot transfer relay. The coil of the pilot transfer relay is connected to one of the "normal" lines that are to be monitored. Additional sensing relays are provided to monitor other "normal" lines in multiphase systems. The line side of one contactor is connected to the "normal" source and the line side of the other contactor is connected to the "emergency" source. Each individual contactor transfers two (2) 20 amp 2-wire circuits. There may be as many as four (4) panels in a 36" x 30" cabinet. The sensing relays and pilot transfer relay coils are energized by voltage from the "normal" source. The relay contacts determine which contactors will be closed, and therefore which power supply will be in use. The mechanical interlock prevents closing of both contactors at the same time to avoid connecting both power supplies to the load. While the monitoring relay coils remain energized by the "normal" source, the "normal" contactor remains closed and the load is fed from the "normal" supply. Failure of any "normal" voltage supply line de-energizes the pilot relays and completes the circuit to the "emergency" contactor coil, closing the "emergency" contactor and connecting the load to the "emergency" power source. Resumption of "normal" service energizes the pilot relay. This opens the "emergency" contactor and closes the "normal" contactor, transferring the load back to the "normal" supply automatically. 16-May-2007 Emergency Transfer Cabinet Page 3 of 25 Pages
