7 About This Manual This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining the General Monitors (GM) FMD, Field Mounted Display Module. The intended audience includes installation personnel, field service technicians, and other technical staff involved in installing and using a FMD. Format Conventions Several format conventions are used throughout this manual for Notes, Cautions, Warnings, and User Menus. These conventions are described below. Notes, Cautions, and Warnings NOTE: Notes provide supplementary detail such as exception conditions, alternate methods for a task, time saving tips, and references to related information. CAUTION: These notices describe precautions to prevent hazardous conditions that may damage the equipment. WARNING: These notices describe precautions to prevent hazardous conditions that may cause injury to people working with the equipment. Menu Formats FMD User Menu keywords and LED digital display messages are shown in bold (example: rst). 8 1.0 Before Installation 1.1 System Integrity Verification General Monitors mission is to benefit society by providing safety solutions through industry leading products, services, and systems that save lives and protect capital resources from the dangers of hazardous flames, gases, and vapors. General Monitors safety products should be handled carefully and installed, calibrated, and maintained in accordance with the individual product instruction manuals. To ensure operation at optimum performance, General Monitors recommends that prescribed maintenance procedures be followed. 1.2 Commissioning Safety Systems Before power up, verify wiring, terminal connections, and stability of the mountings for all essential safety equipment including, but not limited to: Power supplies Control modules Field detection devices Signaling / output devices Accessories connected to field and signaling devices After the initial power up and any factory specified warm-up period of the safety system, verify that all signal outputs, to and from the devices and modules, are within the manufacturers specifications. Initial calibration / calibration checking / testing should be performed according to the manufacturers recommendations and instructions. Proper system operation should be verified by performing a full, functional test of all component devices of the safety system, ensuring that the proper alarm levels occur. Fault / Malfunction circuit operations should be verified. 1.3 Notes and Warnings WARNING: WARNING: Installation and maintenance must be carried out by suitably skilled and competent personnel. Toxic, combustible, and flammable gases and vapors are very dangerous. Extreme caution should be used when these hazards are present. 2

9 2.0 Product Overview 2.1 General Description The General Monitors Model FMD (Figure 1) is a 4-digit LCD display module designed for use with General Monitors Models TS400, TS420, IR2100, and IR7000 Gas Detectors. It is available in an explosion-proof junction box for explosion-proof and general-purpose installations, and in a glass-reinforced polyester junction box for intrinsically safe, increased safety, and general-purpose installations. For intrinsically safe installations, the FMD is 4-20mA loop-powered and provides a local display for the TS400 and TS420 (Figure 1). The display range can be selected via a magnetically activated switch to match the sensor range on the TS400/TS420. The operational mode and gas concentration is displayed on the 4-digit display. For explosion-proof and general purpose installations, the FMD is +24VDC (nominal) powered. Optional relays provide output of warning, alarm and fault conditions at the sensor. Operating mode, display range, warning, and alarm set points are user-selectable via a magnetically activated switch. Relays are user-programmable as latching or non-latching, normally deenergized or normally energized. Latching relays can be reset via a remote reset input or via the magnetic switch. 2.2 Features and Benefits Figure 1: Field Mounted Display with TS400 Microprocessor-based electronics: Monitor fault conditions; sensor inputs and provide outputs in the form of display codes and relay contacts. Setup Mode: Allows the user to set parameters, such as, operating mode, display range, alarm set points, relay settings, etc. These parameters are viewed on the display during the setup mode. 3

10 Test Gas Mode: Allows the user to test the attached gas detector with the warning and alarm relays disabled. Program Review Mode: Allows verification of user programmable options. Protection Options: The Model FMD can be installed in either intrinsically safe or explosionproof installations providing maximum installation flexibility. 2.3 Applications The Model FMD is a 4-digit, field-mounted display for gas detection applications. Below is a partial list of applications: Refineries Drilling platforms and rigs Gas and oil production platforms Gas collection facilities LPG/LNG processing and storage Gas turbines Solvent vapors Chemical & petrochemical plants Paint spray booths Aircraft hangars 2.4 Display Assembly Display Electronics The display electronics are contained within an encapsulated module that is mounted to the lid of the enclosure. A lanyard, connecting the lid and base of the enclosure, protects the module during installation, and simplifies field wiring. In the +24VDC-powered versions of the product, an on-board power supply produces all necessary voltages from the incoming +24VDC. In the loop-powered version, the on-board power supply produces the necessary voltages directly from the 4-20mA loop. The 4-20mA loop is monitored continuously by the microprocessor, which converts the incoming loop current to display values, depending on the selected display range and operating mode. Display range, operating mode, and warning and alarm set points can be programmed via the magnetic switch. All settings are stored in non-volatile memory and are retained if power is lost. 4

11 2.4.2 Enclosure Options The FMD is available in two enclosures. The explosion-proof enclosure (Figure 3) is provided to allow installation in hazardous areas where the protection method in the plant is explosionproof. The IR2100 and IR7000 require this enclosure since their outputs are not intrinsically safe. The explosion-proof enclosure can also be used to install the Model TS400 and TS420 in hazardous areas where the protection method is explosion proof. A zener barrier is mounted in the base of the enclosure to maintain the TS400 and TS420 intrinsically safe approvals. The polyester enclosure (Figure 2) is provided for intrinsically safe protected hazardous areas for the TS400 and TS420. The polyester enclosure can also be used for increased-safety installations of the IR2100/IR7000. NOTE: An explosion-proof conduit seal must be mounted to the TS400 or TS420 at the time of manufacture to maintain the explosion-proof approvals. 12 3.0 Installation 3.1 Upon Receipt of Equipment All equipment shipped by General Monitors is packaged in shock absorbing containers that provide considerable protection against physical damage. The contents should be carefully removed and checked against the packing slip. If any damage has occurred or if there is any discrepancy in the order, notify General Monitors as soon as possible. All subsequent correspondence with General Monitors must specify the equipment part and serial numbers. Each Model FMD is completely checked at the factory; however, a complete checkout is necessary upon initial installation and start up to ensure system integrity. 3.2 Display Location Considerations There are no standard rules for display placement, since the optimum location varies with each installation. The customer must evaluate conditions at the facility to make this determination. Some factors to consider when selecting a display location: Where possible, the display should be easily accessible for installation, viewing of the display, and periodic maintenance. Observe the operating temperature limits of both the Field Mounted Display and the attached gas detector. Locate the units away from concentrated sources of heat. Although the FMD is highly EMI/RFI resistant, it should not be mounted close to radio transmitters or similar equipment. 3.3 Installation For Use With Model TS400 or TS420 The three distinct installation methods when the Field Mounted Display is to be used with the Model TS400 or TS420 are described below Intrinsically-Safe Installation For intrinsically safe installations, the FMD must be mounted in the polyester housing. A safety barrier must be mounted in the non-hazardous area (control room) to maintain the intrinsicsafety approval of the system. NOTE: Refer to Section 6.1 for intrinsic-safety wiring requirements. For this installation, the TS400 or TS420 is connected in series with the Field Mounted Display in the loop-powered configuration. A labeled terminal block is provided in the enclosure for field wiring of the gas detector and the Field Mounted Display (Figure 4). 6

The loop return line is routed through the negative side of the customer supplied safety barrier to the GND terminal in the enclosure. The TS400/TS420 Red and White leads are connected to the TS400 RED and TS400 WHT terminals in the enclosure respectively. The TS400 Green lead must be attached to the EARTH terminal in the enclosure. The Field Mounted Display Red and White leads are connected to the FMD RED and FMD WHT terminals in the enclosure respectively. See Figure 9, for an example of Field Wiring General Purpose Installation Without Relays For general-purpose installations without relays, the FMD can be connected as either a looppowered or a +24VDC powered system. In loop-powered systems, connect as described in Section NOTE: The customer supplied safety barrier is not necessary in this installation. For +24VDC-powered systems, a three-conductor cable is required. +24VDC and Ground are connected to the terminals marked +24VDC and GND respectively (Figure 5). 7

The TS400/TS420 red lead is connected along with the FMD red lead to the terminal marked TS400 RED/FMD RED in the enclosure. The TS400/TS420 white lead and the FMD blue lead are connected to the terminal marked TS400 WHT/FMD BLU in the enclosure. The FMD brown lead is connected to the terminal marked FMD BRN. The FMD white lead is connected to the terminal marked FMD WHT in the enclosure. THE FMD black lead is connected to the terminal marked FMD BLK / FMD WHT in the enclosure. See Figure 10, for examples of Field Wiring General Purpose Installation With Relays For general-purpose installations with relays, the FMD must be connected as a +24VDCpowered system as described in Section The terminal block provided for field wiring in the housing is different due to the need for additional terminals for the relay connections (Figure 6). The FMD wiring to the terminal block has been completed prior to shipment of the product. Field wiring is completed as follows: 1. Connect the +24VDC power supply and the TS400/420 Red lead to the terminal marked +24V. 2. Connect the +24VDC return line to the terminal marked GND. 3. Connect the TS400/420 white lead to the terminal marked AI. If the 4-20mA signal does not need to be monitored in the control room, jumper the terminal marked AO with the GND terminal. 4. If the 4-20mA signal must be monitored in the control room, connect the terminal marked AO to the wire connected to the 4-20mA signal-line in the control room. 8

15 Figure 6: Terminal Connections, General Purpose Installation, with Relays Connections for the relays are clearly marked on the base-plate inside the junction box (Figure 6). The labels for the alarm and warn relays are based on relay settings of normally deenergized. If either of these relays is configured as normally energized, the normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts must be reversed. The fault relay is configured at the factory as normally energized and cannot be changed. The labels for the relay contacts are based on this setting. See Figure 9, for an example of Field Wiring. WARNING: Inductive loads (bells, buzzers, relays, solenoids) must be clamped to avoid damage to the relays in the FMD. Unclamped inductive loads can cause voltage spikes in excess of 1000V.Refer to Figure 7for clamping requirements. Figure 7: Relay Protection Circuits for DC and AC loads 9

16 3.3.4 Explosion-proof Installation of Model TS400 or TS420 For explosion-proof installations, the TS400/TS420 must be ordered from the factory with the explosion-proof conduit seal installed and mounted in the explosion-proof enclosure. The TS400/420 and the FMD are shipped pre-wired in the housing. The TS400/420 wiring is done below the terminal board to TB4 (Figure 8) in the housing to separate the intrinsically safe wiring from the XP rated wiring above the terminal board. An included shunt-diode barrier is mounted in the base of the explosion-proof enclosure to protect the TS400/TS420 s intrinsically safe outputs. Field wiring to the control room must be explosion-proof rated. Field wiring is completed using the terminal blocks marked TB1 and TB2 in the junction box. A label is mounted to the lid of the junction box and terminals are clearly marked to help simplify field wiring. +24VDC NOMINAL +26VDC MAX. 17 TB2 is used to make the power, ground and 4-20mA connections. The terminals are as follows: TB 2 Pin Function 1 Ground 2 AO 3 AO Return 4 +24VDC 5,6 Unused Table 1: TB2 Connections Connect a +24VDC power supply to TB2-4 and power supply return to TB2-1. If the 4-20mA is to be monitored in the control room, connect the control room input to TB2-2. If the 4-20mA is not to be monitored in the control room, jumper TB2-2 to TB2-3. If the optional relays are installed, relay connections are made on terminal block TB1. The terminals are as follows: TB2 PIN Function 1 Warn NO 2 Warn NC 3 Warn Com 4 Alarm NO 5 Alarm NC 6 Alarm Com 7 Fault NO 8 Fault NC 9 Fault Com 10 Relay Reset 11 Relay Reset Rtn Table 2: TB1 Connections The labels for the alarm and warn relays are based on relay settings of normally de-energized. If either of these relays is configured as normally energized, the normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts must be reversed. The fault relay is configured at the factory as normally energized and cannot be changed. The labels for the relay contacts are based on this setting. TB1-10 and TB1-11 are provided for the connection of a remote switch to reset latched relays. Connect a normally open, momentary switch between these terminals. Pressing the switch will reset any latched warn or alarm relays. NOTE: If the optional relays are not installed, terminal block TB1 will not be installed. See Figure 11, for an example of field wiring. 11

18 3.4 Installation For Use With Model IR2100 or IR7000 When used as a display for the Model IR2100 or IR7000, the FMD must be mounted in the explosion-proof junction box. A wiring label is included on the lid of the junction box to simplify field wiring Installation Without Relays Terminal Block TB3 provides screw terminal connections for wiring of the Model IR2100 or IR7000. The gas detector wires should be stripped to approximately 0.25 inches to prevent the possibility of shorting. The TB3 terminals are as follows: TB3 Pin Function 1 Chassis Ground 2 Cbuss+ 3 Cbuss VDC 5 +24V Common mA 7 Remote Cal Table 3: TB3 Connections Field wiring is made on terminal block TB2 as described in Section above. Two additional terminals are provided on TB2 for field wiring of the two MODBUS connections from the gas detector. The additional terminals are: TB2 Pin Function 5 Cbuss+ 6 Cbuss- Table 4: MODBUS Terminal Connections NOTE: Terminal Block TB1 and J2 are not installed since there are no relays. See Figure 12 for an example of field wiring Installation With Relays For units with the optional relays installed, the installation is identical to that described in Section with the exception that terminal block TB1 is installed to allow field wiring of the relays. For a description of terminal block TB1 and how to field wire the relays, please refer to Section Zero Switch Installation The zero switch option is installed identically to the FMD installation without relays as described in Section above. For a description of the Zero and Calibration procedure for the Model IR2100 or IR7000, please refer to the appropriate Instruction Manual. 12

19 3.5 Applying Power Before applying power to the system for the first time, all wiring connections should be checked for correctness, and the housing cover should be securely fastened. Refer to the operating manual of the attached gas detector for required warm-up or stabilization period. Refer to Section Figure 9: Wiring Diagram, General Purpose Installation with Relays 13

23 4.0 Operation This chapter discusses what general maintenance to perform, describes the electrical inputs, outputs, accepting & resetting alarm, calibration & fault conditions, and fault diagnostics. 4.1 Relay Reset If the optional relays are installed and are set to latching, they must be manually reset after an alarm condition occurs. To reset the relays, hold the magnet over the GMI logo on the cover of the housing for approximately 5 seconds. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. When the word clr appears on the display, move the magnet away from the logo and then reapply it. All latching relays will now be reset and the FMD will return to normal operation automatically. Refer to Figure 13: FMD Setup Options for menu options. NOTE: A relay can only be reset when the displayed gas level is below the set point for the relay. 4.2 Test Gas Mode Test Gas Mode provides the capability to test the gas detector response with the relays disabled. To enter test gas mode, hold the magnet over the GMI logo on the cover of the housing for approximately 5 seconds. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. Remove the magnet when clr is displayed. The display will then begin scrolling through a list of setup options. When the display shows the word test, apply and remove the magnet again. The relays are now disabled. The display will flash the current gas reading to show that the relays are disabled. WARNING: Alarms via the 4-20mA output and MODBUS communications cannot be disabled by the Field Mounted Display. Ensure that these alarms are disabled externally. Apply the test gas to the gas detector. The display will show the flashing gas reading for as long as the gas is applied. Remove the gas when testing is completed. When the gas concentration falls below 5% FS, the FMD will return to normal operation, confirmed by the non-flashing display. Refer to Figure 13: FMD Setup Options for menu options. 4.3 Setup Options Figure 13 provides a flow diagram for navigating the setup options menu on the Model FMD Display Range The full-scale range of the display is field selectable. This allows the field-mounted display to be used with all models of the TS400, TS420, IR2100, and IR7000. To select a new display range, hold the magnet over the GMI logo on the cover of the housing for approximately 5 seconds. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. 17

24 When the word clr appears on the display, remove the magnet. The display will begin scrolling through a list of setup options. When the word FACt is displayed, apply and remove the magnet to the GMI logo again. The display will now scroll through a list of available setup options. When the word rng appears, apply and remove the magnet. The unit will display the currently selected display range. To select a new display range, apply and remove the magnet until the desired range appears. The new display range is now stored in non-volatile memory and will be retained if power is removed. The display will continue scrolling. When End is displayed, apply and remove the magnet. The display will now continue to scroll through a list of setup options. When done is displayed, apply and remove the magnet and the unit will return to normal operation. NOTE: The high and low alarm relay set points are automatically scaled to the new display range. The scaling will maintain the alarms at the same percent of full-scale as the previous setting. The unit is shipped from the factory with the warn set point at 30% of full-scale, and the alarm set point at 60% of full-scale. If it is desired to change the relay settings, see the next section Relay Settings (Optional) The high and low alarm relay settings are field selectable. They can be set as latching or nonlatching, and normally energized or de-energized. The alarm set points are also programmable. The fault relay settings are not field selectable and are factory set as energized and nonlatching. To change the relay settings, hold the magnet over the GMI logo on the cover of the housing for approximately 5 seconds. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. When the word clr appears on the display, remove the magnet. The display will begin scrolling through a list of setup options. When the word FACt is displayed, apply and remove the magnet to the GMI logo again. The display will now scroll through a list of available setup options. When the word AL appears, apply and remove the magnet. To change the high alarm settings, apply the magnet to the GMI logo when the display reads Hi. The current setting for latching (LA) or non-latching (nl) is displayed first. Apply and remove the magnet until the desired setting is displayed. Next, the current setting for normally energized (En) or de-energized (de) is displayed. Apply and remove the magnet until the desired setting is displayed. Finally, the high alarm set point is displayed. Apply and remove the magnet until the desired setting is displayed. Apply the magnet when the words End and done appear to return to normal operation Program Review Mode The field-mounted display has a program review mode that allows the user to review all of the user-selectable settings. To access the program review mode, hold the magnet over the GMI logo on the cover of the housing for approximately 5 seconds. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. When the word clr appears on the display, remove the magnet. The display will now scroll through a set of options. When the display reads Pr, reapply the magnet. The display will now scroll through all of the current settings for the unit. After all settings have been displayed, the unit will return to normal operation automatically. See Figure 13 for the user programmable options for the Model FMD. 18

25 4.4 Model IR2100 and IR7000 Calibration The field-mounted display simplifies field zeroing and calibration of the IR2100 and IR7000 by providing cues on the display for the operator. Please refer to the appropriate instruction manual for the gas detector being used for complete calibration instructions. To re-zero the gas detector or perform a complete gas calibration, apply the magnet to the GMI logo on the display cover. The display will show a set of horizontal bars for about 5 seconds. When the word clr appears on the display, remove the magnet. The display will now scroll through a set of options. When the word CAL is displayed, apply and remove the magnet. After a few seconds CAL will begin to flash, followed by a flashing AC on the display. The gas detector is now automatically re-zeroing. NOTE: For the Model IR7000, Nitrogen must be applied to the gas detector at the time of zeroing. Refer to the IR7000 Manual for instructions. After approximately 2 minutes, the display will show a non-flashing AC. This means that the zero operation is complete. If gas calibration is not required, simply wait 30 seconds and the gas detector and FMD will return to normal operation. NOTE: The CAL option is only available in IR2100 mode. If gas calibration is required, when the AC stops flashing, apply the magnet to the GMI logo again. The word CAL will be displayed for a few seconds, followed by a flashing CP. Apply the calibration gas as described in the instruction manual for the gas detector. After approximately 30 seconds, the display will show a non-flashing CP, which means the gas calibration is proceeding. When calibration is complete, the display will show CC. Remove the calibration gas. When the gas at the detector has fallen below 5% FS, the gas detector and FMD will return to normal operation. 4.5 Maintenance For routine maintenance for the attached gas detector please refer to the appropriate instruction manual. The field-mounted display requires no routine maintenance, with the exception that the display window may need to be cleaned occasionally, depending on the conditions at the installation site. Use a commercial window cleaning solution and a soft cloth to clean the display window. 19
