Delta Electronics: Listed & Verified Delta Electronics, part of the Delta Group of companies, is a leading global provider of power supplies, video display and computer software. The company has worked closely with UL since it launched in UL continues to be a trusted Delta partner in safety, performance, and now energy efficiency. Product safety and performance have always been priorities for Delta, but more recently, the company committed to developing energy-efficient products across all categories. UL Environment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of UL, helps UL customers maintain credibility and strengthen brand reputation by verifying the energy efficiency of their products through a new certification program. Delta recently became the first company to successfully undergo testing and earn UL Environment s Energy Efficiency Certification (EEC) Mark validating U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR performance for external power adapters. The new mark will appear on the company s AC-DC External Power Supply Model 1429 product and packaging, which has been tested by UL Environment and proven to meet energy use specifications under ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for Single Voltage External AC-DC and AC- AC Power Supplies Version 2. Formalized in February 2010, the EEC program is applicable to multiple product categories, including high-tech equipment. UL can now assist manufacturers in achieving compliance with energy efficiency programs and government regulations, including ENERGY STAR, in the U.S., Canada and throughout the European Union. In fact, UL s laboratory in San Jose, Calif., is one of a few labs that has received accreditation by The International Accreditation Service (IAS) to test consumer electronics and information technology equipment for compliance to the ENERGY STAR requirements. For more information about demonstrating energy efficiency in power supplies, please contact Asli Solmaz-Kaiser.
Page 2 of 5 Natural Resources Canada Provides Clarification on Energy Efficiency Requirements for Regulated Product Categories Recently, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) published an updated bulletin clarifying the new energy efficiency requirements for TVs, video products and compact audio products. These requirements focus on the off-mode s and stand-by mode s energy usage of these products, and also require that the on-mode s energy usage for TVs is reported. NRCan has also proposed regulations for external power supplies that will focus on the efficiency levels of these products. The effective date of the proposed regulations is expected to occur late in To comply with these proposed requirements, manufacturers must secure third-party validation of energy performance from an SCC-accredited certification body to access the Canadian market. Products will demonstrate they have met these requirements by bearing a valid Energy Efficiency Verification Mark. To help manufacturers meet the NRCan requirements, UL offers certification programs that will test products and certify regulated products for compliance. UL's global network of laboratories is prepared to meet energy efficiency testing and validation requirements for any market, both today and into the future. To find out more information about UL s energy efficiency services, please visit the UL Environment website. UL Developing First-Edition Standard for Wireless Charging Devices for Use with Low- Energy Products In recent years, the proliferation of wireless devices has ironically resulted in a tangle of multiple extension cords, chargers and wires around the home and office. Ultimate mobility has remained elusive as wireless devices have remained tethered to outlets for charging. However, a demand among consumers for wireless charging options and the presence of wireless charging special interest groups have started a movement to eliminate the last wire. As a result, a new class of wireless battery chargers has entered the market. Underwriters Laboratories is developing a first-edition standard for induction power transmitters and receivers for use with low-energy products, UL Before becoming a standard, these requirements will undergo a comprehensive review process by a global Standards Technical Panel (STP), open to product manufacturers, supply chain management, government representatives, consumers and those responsible for enforcing the requirements of codes or standards. UL understands the market need for wireless charging options and is making sure safety stays a primary focus as
Page 3 of 5 the technology becomes more commonplace, said Carlos Correia, vice president, UL High-Tech Division. Our goal is to help manufacturers consider safety even before they begin the product development phase. Candidates who would like to be considered for membership on the STP should send their inquiries to Jonette Herman. For more information about the proposed standard, please contact Asli Solmaz-Kaiser. NEBS Prepares Telecom Equipment to Weather the Storms It seems that every week there is a major earthquake, strong flood or other natural disaster that dominates the news headlines. The survival and continued operation of telecommunication network infrastructures during events like these is necessary to the emergency response process. Telecom providers can t let fire, floods, electric surges, structural damage or airborne contaminants hinder their operations during states of emergency. Because of this, critical telecommunications equipment needs to be designed and manufactured to not only to operate safely but also to withstand these events. For the telecommunications industry, Telcordia generic requirements (GRs) are in place to uphold infrastructure and equipment integrity. These requirements go beyond the core manufacturing principles of safety and reliability that help companies compete in a crowded market. Unfortunately, they are not commonly understood throughout the global telecommunications industry. As an increasing amount of equipment used in telecommunications networks is being produced in different parts of the world, recognizing and adhering to these requirements is essential to new product development. Among the Telcordia requirements is the NEBS Family of Requirements, which stands for Network Equipment Building System. Underwriters Laboratories is one of a few NEBS Test and Compliance providers accepted by all U.S. telecom carriers and a Verizon ITL-certified Lab. The overall testing process is very thorough and covers everything from equipment compatibility to network interference safeguards in order to make sure telecommunications systems are safe, reliable and installed correctly. During NEBS compliance testing, equipment is subjected to real-life simulations to demonstrate they can stand up to a variety of extreme weather and emergency situations that can potentially damage or negatively impact the telecom network. Products are shaken repeatedly for a given period of time to simulate an earthquake or structural collapse and electricity may be shorted out to simulate a lightning strike
Page 4 of 5 that temporarily causes power loss to a central office. Additional simulations test fire resistance, thermal robustness, electromagnetic compatibility and reactions to airborne contaminants and corrosion. UL can create custom test programs integrating domestic and international regulatory compliance to telecom network performance and safety specifications, including IEC and ETSI standards. Currently, NEBS is well-recognized throughout the U.S., and its presence and prominence continues to evolve globally. To read UL s white paper on the subject, click here. For more information about UL s NEBS standard testing please contact Bryan Weber. UL News UL Expands Global Services for Wireless, Network Security and Mobile Payment Systems UL recently acquired RFI Global Services Ltd., a leading provider of testing, approval and consultancy services to the global technology industry, including data security, short/midrange wireless (machine to machine, Bluetooth, broadband) and smart card technologies. RFI Global will be integrated into UL's Verification Services business, which provides performance testing, inspection and auditing for product manufacturers and retailers worldwide. RFI Global is a market leader in testing and certifying new generations of payment devices, including contactless cards and terminals as well as broader mobile payment systems. Headquartered in Basingstoke, near London, RFI Global will operate under the name RFI Global, a UL Company. The acquisition complements the recent UL acquisition of Compliance Certification Services (CCS) based in Fremont, Calif., further enabling manufacturers to use a single organization to certify products to safety and environmental standards, worldwide radio requirements, and also assess the wireless performance and data transmission security aspects of their products. Expanded offerings, as a result of the acquisition, include EMC testing and software capabilities enabling companies to better track and manage global product approval processes. For more information about RFI Global, a UL Company, please contact Bryan Weber. UL CCS Helps Products Meet WirelessHD Requirements As the first Authorized Test Center approved by the WirelessHD Consortium, UL CCS can perform the
Page 5 of 5 Conformance Test Specification to enable consumer electronics devices to bear the WirelessHD logo. From smart phones to TVs to home theater systems, high definition (HD) has quickly been integrated into many of today s consumer electronics. In fact, simplified media streaming and HD content portability have now become the norm rather than the exception. Therefore, cutting-edge technologies that deliver services such as a high-quality viewing experience, complex A/V multimedia content and device interoperability must do so both innovatively and safely. In 2006, the WirelessHD Consortium recognized this need and joined together to create the next-generation wireless interface specification for HD media streaming and transmission in consumer electronics, personal computing and portable device products. To test products for compliance with the WirelessHD specification, UL CCS partnered with Agilent Technologies to co-develop the WirelessHD electronics measurement and test equipment. Not only will this test and equipment accelerate the availability of WirelessHD technology, it will also give consumers the confidence that products bearing the WirelessHD logo have passed rigorous compliance and interoperability testing. For more information on UL CCS WirelessHD services, please contact Takuma Furusawa. Two New Technical Briefs from UL on New Industry Standard, IEC Recently, UL released a white paper on the new industry standard, IEC ,that employs a new form of safety testing, Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE), for audio/video, information technology and communication technology equipment. UL has developed a series of instructional briefs to accompany the paper. Click here to read about the three kinds of persons who may interface with or work around the equipment and what are considered equipment safeguards. For more information about IEC , please contact Kevin Ravo. Copyright 2010 Underwriters Laboratories Inc. All rights reserved.
