4 1. Single Wavelength Add/Drop Module for DWDM Figure 1: Block diagram of the WDM-D module operation. The flashlink Single wavelength Add/Drop module for DWDM (WDM-D15xx.xx) is a fiber optical wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) module. A typical application of this unit is to multiplex or demultiplex a single wavelength from/to a single fiber running up to 16 DWDM wavelengths. The unit is passive with no need for power or control. The module is compliant with the flashlink 16-channel DWDM system with a channel spacing of 200GHz and can be used for either adding or dropping a wavelength. The module has two input/output ports and one common port. Application example Figure 2: Distributed add/drop of 4 CWDM wavelengths (λs) In figure 2 we see an application of WDM-D15xx.xx (three different types for the different wavelengths are used) where 4 different locations are connected to the main site through the same fiber. Each of the 5

6 wavelengths can be used either way, meaning that e.g. sites 1-3 can send content to the main site, whereas site 4 receives content from the main site. 4. Mounting the module This section only applies if the module is not purchased pre-mounted in a sub-rack. The WDM-D is a self-enclosed box that can be mounted in the flashlink frame. This module is mounted from the rear of the sub-rack frame using 4 M2.5x8 screws. The connector module is shown in figure 3. Figure 3: Overview of the WDM-D connector module. The details of how the connector module is mounted, is found in the user manual for the sub-rack frame FR-2RU-10-2-F. This manual is also available from our web site: 5. Module status The WDM-D is an all-optical module with no electrical connections; hence there is no on-board processing or monitoring. The only possibilities for the module to fail are if either the fiber is broken, or if the fiber connections at the rear are bad. Then no signal will pass the module. 5.1 Front Panel - Status Monitoring The WDM-D is an all-optical module, so there are no LEDs on the module. 6

7 6. Laser safety precautions Guidelines to limit hazards from laser exposure. All the available EO units in the flashlink range include a laser. Therefore this note on laser safety should be read thoroughly. The lasers emit light at 1310 nm or 1550 nm. This means that the human eye cannot see the beam, and the blink reflex can not protect the eye. (The human eye can see light between 400 nm to 700 nm). A laser beam can be harmful to the human eye (depending on laser power and exposure time), therefore:!! BE CAREFUL WHEN CONNECTING / DISCONNECTING FIBER PIGTAILS (ENDS). NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE PIGTAIL OF THE LASER/FIBER. NEVER USE MICROSCOPES, MAGNIFYING GLASSES OR EYE LOUPES TO LOOK INTO A FIBER END. USE LASER SAFETY GOGGLES BLOCKING LIGHT AT 1310 nm AND AT 1550 nm. Instruments exist to verify light output power: Power meters, IR-cards etc. flashlink features: The FR-2RU-10-2 is classified as Class 1 laser product according to EN :94/A11:96, and CFR Ch1(1997) Part If the front panel is removed, the FR-2RU-10-2 is classified as Class 1 laser product according to EN :94/A11:96, and class IIIb according to CFR Ch1(1997) Part Maximum output power: 5 mw. Operating wavelengths: >1260nm nm. < 5mW >1270nm 7

8 Declaration of conformity with CE This apparatus meets the requirements of EN (November 1996) with regard to emissions, and EN (November 1996) with regard to immunity; it thereby complies with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 89/336/EEC. General environmental requirements for flashlink equipment 1. The equipment will meet the guaranteed performance specification under the following environmental conditions: Operating room temperature range 0 C to 50 C Operating relative humidity rangeup to 90% (non-condensing) 2. The equipment will operate without damage under the following environmental conditions: Temperature range -10 C to 55 C Relative humidity range up to 95% (non-condensing) 3. Electromagnetic compatibility conditions: Emissions EN (Directive 89/336/EEC) Immunity EN (Directive 89/336/EEC) 8
