2 PLC Alarm System PLC-system As technology moves on, more sophisticated alarm systems are widely used. When implementing systems with more than twenty five detectors, the use of a PLC-system is worth to consider. Such a compact, software-driven system is simple to expand and allows for quick modifications. User specific functions can easily be programmed. For example functions, which enable the communication with other systems in the facility. 3 Software for PLC Alarm System SIMS-NX Software Sensor Information Management System A PLC-system has lots of advantages. But on its own, it fails to have the possibility of visualisation; it is a blind box. SIMS-NX is designed to monitor and display the signals of a large variety of sensors on pc screens. That makes SIMS-NX the natural partner for a PLC-configuration. The combination is hard to beat when it comes to flexibility, reliability and functionality. TM SIMS-NX Sensor Information Management System PACT Software PACT is used to program the alarm handling procedures of the PLC-system. An user friendly, well structured, interface relates the input signals to the output actions. PACT is the only alarm handling software on the market which allows the user to change the settings real time, during full operation of the PLC. There is no down time required while making adjustments to the system! By using Profibus-DP enabled detectors from the Observer WAD range it is even possible to add new detectors without interrupting the processes in the PLC. 4 Single channel controller cards and housings Single channel alarm card with a direct indication of the gas concentration. With a 4-20mA input signal and an RS-485 output signal (SIMS). Each card has integrated relay contacts for Alarm1, Alarm2 and Error. When placed in one of the belonging housing the cards can be used to create both small and large alarm systems. 5 Alarm handling explained Alarm controller A controller is used to convert a signal from a gas detector into an actual alarm. It displays the level of the gas monitored and indicates a possible alarm status with red LEDs. In case of an alarm, a buzzer alerts the operator. Free programmable potential free dry output contacts are available for each alarm level. Centralised alarm handling With larger installations the alarm handling often takes place from a central location. Traditionally this is realised with individual alarm indicator controllers located at cabinet housings using 19 racks. More flexibility is obtained by using a PLC based alarm system. More information on this type of system can be found in the section PLC Alarm System in this brochure. Alarm handling within the detector Next to the conventional centralised set up it is more and more common practice to use systems which have the controller functions integrated inside the detectors. With this type of system event decisions can be made directly at the point of detection. Alarm information generated by the detectors can be transmitted conventional (4-20mA) or by means of a bus line to a central alarm system. The information can also be used to operate the local relays contacts which are integrated in the detector. The entire Observer WAD range detectors are equipped with these and yet more extensive alarm functions. More information on the Observer WAD detectors can be found in a separate brochure. Alarm units with free programmable I/O matrix 8CWA and 16CWA These eight and sixteen channel units are the ideal solution for small and medium size gas detection systems which rely on a 4-20mA signal transmission. Every channel has three free programmable alarm levels - alarm 1, alarm 2 and warning. The IP65 protection class allows the units to be deployed in wet and industrial environments. By means of the RS-485 output signal the units can be connected to a central data-acquisition and monitoring system like SIMS-NX. Configuration of the units takes place with In-control TM software.
