(Occupant Load) of the project shall be provided on the cover sheet and shall not be less than the number of persons determined by dividing the floor area assigned to that use by the occupant load factor for the use as specified in Table of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 Edition and as modified and amended by the State Fire Marshal's Office rules and regulations. I040 (Simultaneous Occupancy) Exits shall be sufficient for simultaneous occupancy of both the assembly occupancy and other parts of the building. Permit approvals and inspections are not required for this project by this office. Plans are ok as submitted. Site plan approval is required prior to building plan approval. A commodity affidavit for all occupancies classified as Storage according to the definition in the Life Safety Code, 2000 Edition shall be provided. The commodity affidavit shall be on the Gwinnett County Fire Marshal's Office Storage and Industrial Occupancy Commodity Affidavit and shall identify all types of commodities to be stored. In addition, information concerning the method of storage shall be provided. (i.e. pallets on floors, shelves, rack storage, height of storage.) (Fire Alarm System) to be provided in accordance with NFPA 72, 2012 Edition. (Standpipe System) shall be provided where required by sections through of the International Fire Code 2012 edition and shall be installed per NFPA 14, 2013 Edition. (Roof Access) shall be provided for new buildings four or more stories in height, except those with a roof slope greater than four units vertical in 12 units horizontal shall be provided with a stairway to the roof. International Fire Code 2012 edition section (Fire Extinguishers) shall be located per the requirements of NFPA 10. The size shall be a minimum of A BC, is/are required and shall be installed at a maximum of 48" above the finished floor to the top of the handle. (Fire Sprinkler System) to be installed in accordance with the Gwinnett County Fire Protection and Life Safety Ordinance and NFPA edition (Exhaust Hood and Grease) removal system is required to be installed over the cooking appliances in accordance with NFPA edition. 3 I085 (Exhaust Hood and Grease) removal system is not required to be installed under the following conditions; (1) Where located in a single dwelling unit, (2) Cooking equipment in facilities where all of the following are met: (a) Only residential cooking equipment such as: stoves, ranges or cooking surfaces traditionally used in dwelling units are being utilized. (b) The defined residential cooking equipment contains a maximum of four standard surface cooking elements and is not used for frying operations. (c) The defined residential cooking equipment is used for food warming, limited cooking, rehabilitation training or in a home economic education classroom setup. (d) The residential cooking equipment is protected by a listed self-contained residential fire suppression system located in an approved residential hood which is vented directly to the outside and providing protection to the cooking surface. The self-contained fire suppression system for the defined residential cooking equipment need not be provided where protection is provided by an approved automatic sprinkler system protecting the cooking surface, subject to the authority having jurisdiction. In case of activation, the selfcontained residential fire suppression system shall automatically disconnect electric power to electric stoves, and shut off the gas supply to gas fueled stoves. (e) The facility is not an assembly occupancy, provided, this shall not apply to church facilities with a single residential stove or range complying with (b) above. (f) Fire extinguishers are located in all kitchen areas in accordance with NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, and this Code, as adopted with modifications. State Fire Marshal Modifications to NFPA 96, 2011 edition, Chapter Rules and Regulations for the State Minimum Fire Safety Standards Interior Finish- Life Safety I090 I095 I100 I103 I105 (Interior Wall and Ceiling Finish) Interior wall and ceiling finish materials shall be a Class, A, B, or C in areas other than exits and exit enclosures which require a Class A or B finish in accordance with section 10.2 of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. Provide verification that the products comply with the requirements. (Interior Floor Finish) Interior floor finish shall comply with section 10.2 and of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Fireplaces) shall be installed per the requirements of NFPA 211, 2013 Edition or manufacturer's installation instructions. Provide additional information on the specifics of the fireplace. (Platform and Stage Construction) Permanent platforms and stages shall be constructed of materials required for the building construction type in which the platform or stage is located in. Temporary platforms shall be permitted to be constructed of any materials. The finish floor shall be permitted to be of wood in all types of construction. NFPA Life Safety Code 2012 edition, sections (Accessible Routes to Spaces and Elements) At least one accessible route shall connect accessible building or facility entrances with all accessible spaces and elements within the building or facility which are otherwise connected by a circulation path. 4 I110 I115 I116 I120 I125 I130 I135 (Rubbish Chutes, Incinerators and Laundry Chutes) shall be installed per the requirements of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, Section Edition and NFPA 82. (Attic Draft-Stopping in Commercial -Non-Residential Buildings) shall be constructed of wood or metal studs with one layer of fire rated gypsum board on each side to divide combustible attic spaces into areas of 3,000 square feet of less. Access panels, 24" x 36" in size shall be located leading into each area from the floor level immediately below the compartmentalized area. Gwinnett County Ordinance For Fire Prevention and Protection Sections and sections Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Requirements for Tenant Separations and Attic Separation within Multi-Family Residential Buildings) All tenant separations shall have a minimum fire resistance rating of one hour. All tenant separation walls shall extend from the floor of the lowest level to the underside of the roof deck, unless the top floor/ceiling assembly has a one hour fire resistance rating in which event attic draft-stops shall be installed at 3,000 sq ft intervals or at every other tenant line, whichever is less. Attic draft-stopping shall run with the roof trusses and be placed to create compartments covering no more than two units. Access panels, 24" x 36" in size, shall be located leading into each area from the floor level immediately below the compartmentalized area. (Tenant Separation walls) are to be one hour fire rated construction that extends from the floor to the underside of the roof or fire rated floor deck with all openings sealed tight per the 2012 Gwinnett County Ordinance for Fire Prevention and Protection Ordinance section (Fire stop Systems and Devices Required) Penetrations for cables, cable trays, conduits, pipes, tubes, combustion vents and exhaust vents, wires, and similar items to accommodate electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and communications systems that pass into or through a wall, floor, or floor/ceiling assembly constructed as a fire barrier shall be protected by a fire stop system or device. Life Safety Code section of the 2012 edition. Fire stop systems shall have a minimum of 1-hour F rating, but not less than the required fire resistive rating of the fire barrier penetrated, section Penetrations in fire rated horizontal assemblies shall have a minimum 1-hour T rating, but not less than the fire resistive rating of the horizontal assembly, section Provide a penetration detail(s) for all types of penetration types. (Exterior Curtain Walls and Perimeter Joints) Voids created between the fire resistancerated floor assembly and the exterior curtain wall shall be protected with a perimeter joint system that is designed, tested and listed. (Rated Wall Details) for all fire rated wall and floor/ceiling assemblies shall be provided along with a listing number provided by a recognized testing agency. 5 I140 I145 I150 (Fire Barrier Continuity) shall comply with one of the following: (1) The barriers are continuous from outside wall to outside wall or from one fire barrier to another, or a combination thereof, including continuity through all concealed spaces, such as those found above a ceiling, including interstitial spaces. (2) The fire barriers are continuous from outside wall to outside wall or from one fire barrier to another, and from floor to the bottom of the interstitial space, provided that the construction assembly forming the bottom of the interstitial space has a fire resistance rating not less than that of the fire barrier. NFPA Life Safety Code, 2012 edition, section (Identification of Fire Barriers) shall be by Signs or Stenciling permanently installed on all rated barriers or walls, above any decorative ceiling and/or in concealed spaces. The lettering shall be 2" in height and spaced every 12 ft. The following wording is recommended " hour fire and smoke barrier protect all openings", (Vertical Opening Protection) Every floor that separates stories in a building shall meet the following criteria: (1) It shall be constructed as a smoke barrier in accordance with section 8.5, unless the floor is a tenant separation barrier, in that case it shall be a one hour rated assembly. (2) It shall be permitted to have openings as described by 8.6.6, 8.6.7, 8.6.8, 8.6.9, or as permitted in Chapters 11 through 43. NFPA Life Safety Code 2012 edition, section 8.6. I155 I160 I165 I170 I175 (Elevator Lobby Protection) shall be provided per the requirements of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 edition, Chapter 9, Section 9.4 and as amended by the Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office, Section Provide a list of all (Hazardous Materials) by filling out the Hazardous Material Inventory Statement. (Hazardous Operations) shall be designed using the criteria of applicable NFPA standards and the 2012 International Fire Code. (Flammable and Combustible Liquids) protection shall be designed using the 2003 edition of NFPA 30. Provide a (Storage Racking Plan) for any storage area where racking is installed and combustible materials are to be stored over 12 ft. The Storage Racking Plan shall be submitted and approved before racks are installed. Chapter 32 International Fire Code, 2006 Edition. Additional Exit and Emergency lighting may be required upon the installation on Storage Racks. The following information is required to obtain a racking permit. (a) A commodity affidavit on company letterhead describing the commodity that is being stored. Provide information on plastics and hazardous materials. (see attached sheet to determine the commodity class) (b) Scaled floor plans of the building highlighting the designated storage area and label all areas as to their use. (c) Elevations of the racks with storage height dimensions. e: Four feet will automatically be added to the top shelf to determine storage height. (d) Information on how product is stored: (i.e. wood pallets, plastic pallets, shelves, wire mesh). (e) Information on how product is packaged: (i.e. boxes, cartons, containers). 6 I180 I185 I190 I195 (Doors, Opening Protective) Every opening in a fire barrier shall be protected to limit the spread of fire and restrict the movement of smoke from one side of the fire barrier to the other. The fire protection rating for opening protective shall be as follows: 2-hour fire barrier---90 min fire protection rating; 1-hour fire barrier---60 min fire protection rating where used for vertical openings or exit enclosures. 1-hour fire barrier---45 min fire protection rating where used for other than vertical openings or exit enclosures. Where the barrier is is provided as a result of a requirement that corridor walls or smoke barriers be of 1-hour fire restance-rated construction, the opening shall be permitted to have not less than a 20 min fire protection rating. NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2012 edition, section and Table (Occupancy Separation) shall be provided per International Building Code, 2012 Edition. Separation from Transformer s. Space separation for transformers shall be as follows: (1) Transformer pad locations shall be a minimum of 10 feet (3 m) from any building, building overhangs, canopies, exterior walls, balconies, exterior stairs and/or walkways connected to the building. (2) Transformer pad edges shall be not less than 14 feet (4.3 m) from any doorway. (3) Transformer pad edges shall be not less than 10 feet (3 m) from any window or other opening. (4) If the building has an overhang, the 10 foot (3 m) clearance shall be measured from a point below the edge of the overhang only if the building is three stories or less. If the building is four stories or more, the 10 foot (3 m) clearance shall be measured from the outside building wall. (5) Fire escapes, outside stairs, and covered walkways attached to or between buildings, shall be considered as part of the building. Exception No. 1: For (1), transformer pads may be located closer to noncombustible walls than the above required minimum clearances upon written approval of the authority having jurisdiction, however, in no case shall the transformer location be less then 3 feet (0.9 m) from the building. Exception No. 2: Transformer pads existing prior to December 31, 1994, are exempted from this requirement. When buildings are modified, reductions in space separations may be less than the above required minimum clearances upon written approval of the authority having jurisdiction , IFC FYI (Rooms Enclosing Air Handling Equipment, Compressor Equipment, Furnaces or other Heating Equipment) with a total aggregate input rating less than 200,000 BTU input. Such rooms shall not be used for any combustible storage. A minimum of 30 inches unobstructed access shall be provided and maintained to equipment and electrical or emergency control panels or devices for emergency response purposes. 7 I200 I205 I210 (Protection from Hazards) Protection from any area having a degree of hazard greater than that normal to the general occupancy shall be provided by one of the following means, (section Life Safety Code 2012 edition): (1) Enclosing the area with a fire barrier that has 1 hour fire resistance rating in accordance with section 8.3 of the 2012 Life Safety Code, or (2) Protecting the area/room with a automatic extinguishing systems with sprinkler piping serving not more than 6 six sprinklers for any isolated hazardous area shall be permitted to be connected directly to a domestic water supply system having a capacity sufficient to provide 0.15 gpm/sq ft throughout the entire enclosed area. An indicating shutoff valve, supervised and monitored in accordance with section OR valves locked in the open position in accordance to section (3) of NFPA 13 Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems 2013 edition (Stairway Identification Signs) New enclosed stairs serving three or more stories shall comply with (A) through (M) of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. Provide a typical detail of the stairway identification sign. (Mezzanines) shall comply with the requirements of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, Chapter 8, Section , 2012 Edition. I215 I220 I225 I230 I235 I240 I245 (Door Leaf Swing Direction) Door leaves required to be of the side-hinged or pivotedswinging type shall swing in the direction of egress travel under any of the following conditions: (1) Where serving a room or area with an occupant load of 50 or more, except under any of the following conditions : (a) Door leaves in horizontal exits shall not be required to swing in the direction of egress travel where permitted. (b) Door leaves in smoke barriers shall not be required to swing in the direction of egress travel in existing health care occupancies. (2) Where the door assembly is used in an exit enclosure, unless the door opening serves an individual living unit. (3) Where the door opening serves a high hazard contents area. (Door Openings) in the means of egress shall provide not less than 32" clear width (minimum door width is 36"). When pairs of doors are used, one door shall be a minimum of 32" clear width..section of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Floor Level) the elevation of the floor surfaces on both sides of a door opening shall not vary by more than 1/2". The elevation shall be maintained on both sides of the door opening for a distance not less than the width of the widest leaf. Section of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Door Hardware) Handles, pulls, latches, locks, and other operating devices on accessible doors shall have a shape that is easy to grasp with one hand and does not require tight grasping, tight pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate. Lever-operated mechanisms, push-type mechanisms, and U-shaped handles are acceptable designs. Georgia Accessibility Code. (Egress Capacity) for approved components of means of egress shall be based on the capacity factors shown in Table , unless otherwise provided in Section of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Panic Hardware and Fire Exit Hardware) if required by the appropriate occupancy chapter it shall be provided for all exit doors and meet the requirements of section of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 edition. NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2012 edition section (Openings to Exit Enclosures) Conveyors, elevators, dumbwaiters, and pneumatic conveyors serving various stories of a building shall not open to an exit enclosure. Life Safety Code 2012 edition section (Exit Enclosures) Openings into exit enclosures shall be limited to door assemblies from normally occupied spaces and corridors and door assemblies for egress from the enclosure, unless allowed by section (9). NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2012 edition (Number of Exits) The number of means of egress from any balcony, mezzanine, story, or portion thereof shall not be less than two, unless permitted in Chapters 11 through 42 of the Life Safety Code. (Discharge from Exits) Exits shall terminate directly, at a public way or at an exterior discharge, unless otherwise provided in through per NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2012 Edition. (Exit Signs) complying with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code section 7.10, 2012 Edition, shall be installed. Additional exit signs may be required upon field inspection. (Emergency Lighting) shall be installed based on the occupancy as determined by chapters 11 thru 43 of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2012 edition. Any required emergency lighting shall be installed per section 7.9 of the Life Safety Code. (Remoteness of Exits) Where two exits, exit accesses, or exit discharges are required, they shall be located at a distance from one another not less than one half of the length of the maximum overall diagonal dimension of the building or area to be served, measured in a straight line between the nearest edge of the exits, exit access, or exit discharge. The distance can be reduced to one third of the diagonal distance for areas being protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system. Life Safety Code 2012 edition, sections and (Exit Travel Distance) travel distance limitations shall be provided as per the appropriate occupancy chapter of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 Edition. (Common Path of Travel for New Businesses) shall not exceed 75 feet in buildings not protected throughout by an approved supervised fire sprinkler system and those occupancies protected by an approved supervised fire sprinkler system shall not exceed 100 feet, section and Common path of travel shall not exceed 100 feet within a single tenant space having an occupant load not exceeding 30 persons, section of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. (Common Path for New Hotels, Dormitories, and Apartments) shall not exceed 35 ft in buildings not protected throughout by an approved automatic supervised fire sprinkler system, in building protected by an approved supervised fire sprinkler system the common path of travel shall not exceed 50 feet; in both cases, travel within a guest room/suite or dwelling unit shall not be included when calculating the common path of travel per the appropriate section and chapter of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code 2012 Edition I320 I325 I330 I335 (Common Path of travel for New Residential Board and Care) shall not exceed 75 feet section of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition (Common Path of Travel for New Assisted Living Community) shall not exceed 75 feet in accordance per section of the new added Chapter 34 of the Life Safety Code 2012 edition. Chapter Rules and Regulations for the State Minimum Fire Safety Standards. (Stairs) shall be solid with no perforations, nosings or open risers wide with treads a minimum of 11" deep and risers a maximum of 7" high with a maximum height between landings not to exceed 12 feet. NFPA Life Safety Code section and Table (a) (Minimum New Stair Width) Where the total occupant load of all stories served by the stair is fewer than 50, the minimum stair width shall be 36 inches. Where the total cumulative occupant load assigned to the stair is less than 2000, the stair shall be a minimum of 44 inches, where the cumulative occupant load exceeds 2000, the stair shall be 56 inches wide. 10 I340 I345 I350 I355 I360 (Usable Space) Enclosed, usable spaces within exit enclosures shall be prohibited, including under stairs, unless the space is separated from the stair enclosure by the same fire resistive rating as the exit enclosure and the entrance to the enclosed, usuable space shall not be from within the stair enclosure. Life Safety Code 2012 edition section (Separation and Protection of Outside Stairs) Outside stairs shall be separated from the interior of the building by walls with the fire resistance rating required for enclosed stairs with fixed or self-closing opening protective. This construction shall extend vertically from the ground to a point 10 ft (3m) above the topmost landing of the stairs or to the roofline, whichever is lower, and to a point not less than 10ft (3m) horizontally. Please correct and provide any necessary details on the plans for fire rated assemblies. NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, section (Handrails) on both sides of all stairs are required and shall be set at 34" to 38" above the surface of the tread measured vertically to the top of the rail from the leading edge of the tread. Life Safety Code 2012 edition, section (Handrail Details) New handrails on stairs and ramps shall be provided on both sides and shall not be less than 34 inches and not more than 38inches, above the surface of the tread, measured vertically to the top of the rail from the leading edge of the tread. NFPA Life Safety Code 2012 edition section and the 2010 ADA Accessible Design. (Guard Rails) shall be provided at the open sides of means of egress that exceed 30 inches above the the floor or the finished ground level below. They shall be 42 inches in height and have intermediate rails/pickets such that a sphere 4inches in diameter is not able to pass through the opening. Life Safety Code 2012 edition sections and I365 Accessibility I370 (Accessible Route Locations) shall coincide with or be located in the same area as general circulation paths. Where circulation paths are interior, required accessible routes shall also be interior ADA Standards section I520 Where (Drinking Fountains) are provided they shall meet the requirements of section 602 of the 2010 ADA Standards of Accessible Design. The spout height shall be 36 inches maximum above the finished floor and provide a flow of water 4 inches high minimum to allow the insertion of a cup for and individual who, because of a disability would otherwise be incapable of using a drinking fountain.
