4 About us Cooper Safety Fire Systems Cooper Fire offers a comprehensive range of JSB fire detection products suitable for most small standard installations and installations requiring BS5839 Pt1 & Pt6 compliance. Cooper Fire manufacture a wide range of products and offers complete fire solutions, not just individual components. A complete system can be specified from a single source, confident in the knowledge that all the components have been specifically designed and tested to ensure they are all fully compatible with each other and will function as a truly integrated fire detection and alarm system. It is absolutely vital that all the elements of a fire detection system are fully compatible with each other. To support this philosophy, a large multi-disciplined research and development team is based in the UK at the Cooper Doncaster facility, responsible for the integration of the very latest technology into the design of our comprehensive range of fire products. 4

6 Bi-Wire System Architecure The JSB Bi-Wire systems is based on standard conventional system technology, but it also incorporates additional functionality to enable the callpoints, detectors and sounders for each separate zone to be wired on a single common circuit. This enables the control panel to use a single circuit per zone for connection of detectors, sounders, LED beacons and relays. Even though the panel continually powers the sounders, control functionality incorporated within the sounders enables them to only be activated in the event of a fire alarm condition. By combining both the detection and the alarm annunciation wiring into a single circuit, considerable savings in installation time and cabling can be achieved. Although adding Bi-Wire technology to the detectors and the sounders does slightly increase the equipment costs this is more than offset by the substantial savings in installation and cabling cost. 7 Bi-Wire Product Range FX2200BW Range Control Panels Patented Technology semi-recessing back box (for 4 and 8 zone panel) FX2204BWHMO 4 zone control panel simple user interface Overview The JSB range of Bi-Wire control panels are designed with Cooper patented 2 wire technology (Patent Number GB ) and also includes patented Self-Check detector features (Patent Number EP: ). Bi-Wire conventional detectors, sounders, LED beacons, and relay modules, all share the same zone wiring, delivering significant savings in both cable and installation costs. All panels in this range have the facility to flash detector LED s in a zone to facilitate the location of any wiring fault in that zone, thereby simplifying the fault finding process. The 4 and 8 zone panels provide enhanced features, which includes HMO programming per zone via the easily accessible DIP switch. If a zone is programmed for HMO and a fire occurs in that zone, only the sounders in that zone will sound, if the fire is cleared within 2 minutes, the panel will reset automatically, otherwise the sounders in all the zones will operate. Features 2, 4, and 8 zone panels Self-Check features Detectors, sounders and relay modules share same wiring Repeater output on 4 and 8 zone panel Class change facility Selectable fire/fault relay Supports up to 20 detectors and 20 sounders / ancillaries per zone Detector removal indication Maintenance-free poly switch Weekly test/walk test facility Benefits Minimise cabling requirements Reduced installation time Maximises installation savings 4 and 8 zone panels HMO compliant Simplified fault finding process Improved system integrity 7

32 Conventional System Architecture The philosophy of a conventional system revolves around dividing the building into a number of areas called zones. The detectors and callpoints within each zone are then wired on dedicated circuits. In the event of a detector or callpoint being triggered, the panel is able to identify which circuit contains the triggered device and thereby indicate which zone the fire alarm has come from. It is then necessary to manually search the indicated zone to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire alarm. Unwanted Alarms Because most conventional detectors are simple two state devices they can only be in either a normal or fire condition. Although modern components and good system design can go some way to reducing potential problems, it is not uncommon for conventional systems to generate unwanted alarms due to certain operating conditions or transient environmental conditions such as the presence of steam near to a smoke detector. A key development aimed at reducing such unwanted alarms has been the multi-criteria detector. Traditionally, detectors were designed to respond to particular fire phenomena such as heat or the presence of smoke. However, Cooper now offer multi-criteria devices, which contain both a smoke sensing element and a thermal sensing element. The fire alarm decision is taken by analysis of the responses from both elements, resulting in improved detection performance as well as greatly enhanced false alarm suppression. This increases installation complexity by forcing the sounder wiring to follow different routes to that of the detector wiring. When designing a conventional system it is important to ensure that the panel has adequate zone capacity for the size and complexity of the building and that the panel can support the intended sounder circuit wiring and loading. Zone 1 Zone 2 Sounder Circuits In addition to the detection circuits, there is also a need for separate circuits of alarm annunciation devices such as sounders and beacons to signal the existence of a fire alarm condition to the building users. For sounder circuit continuity monitoring to function effectively, sounder circuits have to be wired in a single radial circuit, spurs and tees are not permitted. Almost every conventional fire panel will have facilities for more than one sounder circuit and generally the higher the specification of the panel or the higher the number of detection zones provided, the more sounder circuits will be provided. Normally however there will be less sounder circuits than detection zone circuits so it will be necessary for a sounder circuit to provide cover for more than one zone. Zone 3 Zone 4 32

43 Conventional Product Range Detectors optical / photo-thermal / heat detectors innovative light pipe technology allows LED to be seen from any angle Overview The JSB range of conventional detectors have been specifically designed to operate with JSB control panels. The JSB optical detector FXN533 is suitable for most applications giving the fastest response to slow burning or smouldering fires which give rise to large visible smoke particles. The JSB photo-thermal detector FXN632 will respond quickly to fast clean burning fires yet maintain the advantage of optical detectors when detecting smouldering fires. The thermal enhancement of this detector allows a higher alarm threshold which provides a greater rejection of false alarms. The detector will also raise an alarm at temperatures exceeding 60ºC. The JSB fixed heat detectors FXN524 and FXN526 will detect temperatures above 77ºC and 92ºC. The rate of rise heat detector FXN525 is used to detect rapid increases in temperature with a maximum threshold of 60ºC.
