5 DOC Cremer Heating and Hot Water Plant Project Number: M SECTION WATER BASED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS PART 1- GENERAL 1.1 REFERENCES A. All sections of Division 01, GENERAL REQUIREMENTS, and all requirements of Section BASIC MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS, and Section BASIC MECHANICAL MATERIALS AND METHODS apply to the work under this specification section. Articles in other sections of this specification that are applicable to fire suppression work shall govern work under this section. All work under this section of the specifications shall comply with, but not be limited to, the latest edition of the following NFPA standards: No. 13 Standard for the Installation ofsprinlder Systems No. 14 Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems No. 24 Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances 1.2 GENERAL FIRE SUPPRESSION REQUIREMENTS A. Fire suppression work shall be a separate contract performed by a qualified Fire Suppression Contractor licensed in the state of Missouri. This section shall govern the installation of all fire suppression specialties. Contractor shall be responsible for including the cost of all labor, accessories, tools, equipment and material required to install the fire suppression systems shown on the drawings and as specified, as well as the cost for permits, plan reviews, inspections and testing. B. All work and material shall meet the approval of the local Authorities Having Jurisdiction. C. Fittings for offsets will be included in bid with no extra cost to Owner after contract is awarded. 1.3 SCOPE OF WORK A. Furnish and install fire protection piping as shown on contract drawings and as specified herein. Work shall include the following major items: 1. Backflow preventer assembly 2. Modification to existing standpipe system 3. Modification to existing sprinkler system 1.4 DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEMS A. Water Based Fire Protection Systems. WATER BASED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
6 DOC Cremer Heating and Hot Water Plant Project Number: Ml4ll SUBSTITUTIONS A. No substitution will be allowed except as specified in Section 23 0 I SHOP DRAWINGS AND SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Shop drawings shall be submitted in accordance with the requirements described in Section B. Drawings and specifications are provided for establishing the scope of the system and are not intended to show all details and components. Contractor shall be required to prepare detailed drawings and to furnish material and equipment shop drawings and manufacturer's catalog cuts for submission to the enforcing authorities and to the Architect/Engineer prior to commencing work or ordering material. Shop drawings being submitted for approval shall bear the seal of the Contractor's Engineer responsible for design. The seal of the Engineer responsible for contract documents shall not appear on Contractor's shop drawings. Three (3) copies of the installation drawings bearing the stamp of approval of the enforcing authorities and of the rating bureau as applicable shall be submitted to the Architect/Engineer for record purposes. PART 2- PRODUCTS 2.1 BACKFLOW PREVENTION A. Furnish and install double check backflow preventer assembly where shown on drawings, UL listed and FM approved. Device shall include supervised OS& Y gate valves. Devices shall be by Watts. Devices by Cla-Val, Ames Model DC, or Febco, meeting the above specifications will be considered for approval. 2.2 REQUIREMENTS OF PIPE, MATERIAL AND DEVICES. A. B. c. Carefully compare the architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans with the fire suppression plans. All piping shall maintain proper clearance from structural, electrical and mechanical items and shall be installed in accordance with all applicable NFPA requirements. All material, equipment, valves, and devices shall be UL listed and FM approved in the fire suppression equipment list. Piping and Materials for Fire Protection Systems: 1. Piping shall be steel meeting the standards listed in NFPA for above ground pipe and tube. All steel piping shall be UL listed and FM approved for fire suppression use. Use the following steel pipe in the applications permitted by NFP A and stated herein: a. Schedule 40, standard weight All piping shall be listed for a minimum of 300 psi continuous use and shall have an installed UL Corrosion Resistance Ratio (CRR) of 1.0 or greater. WATER BASED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
7 DOC Cremer Heating and Hot Water Plant Project Number: Ml Acceptable Pipe-End Finishes: a. Threaded: Schedule 40. b. Roll-Groove: Schedule Fittings and joints shall be ASTM and ANSI standards and shall be compatible with the piping used. 4. All fittings and joints shall be UL listed and FM approved, rated for 175 psi working pressure. D. Pipe Supports: 1. All hangers and supports shall be galvanized steel. 2. All pipe hangers and supports shall comply with the requirements of these specifications and NFPA Standards. 3. All pipe hangers shall be suppmied fi om approved inserts or beam or joist clamps, as applicable. 4. Hanger rods constructed of all-thread rods shall be electro-zinc plated. 5. Fire suppression systems shall meet all applicable requirements for seismic design listed innfpa. E. Pressure Gauges: 1. Furnish and install pressure gauge at double check assembly. 2. For each gauge, furnish and install gauge shutoff valve and provision for draining gauge. 3. Pressure gauges shall have Grade B accuracy, as defined by ASME B40.1 and DIN standards. Gauge movement shall be brass or bronze bourdon tube type. Gauge shall have inch steel case. Gauge shall be listed to have no less than twice the normal operating pressure. F. Sprinklers shall be UL listed. 1. All new sprinklers shall be quick response type. 2. All sprinklers shall be ordinary temperature rated, 155 deg. F. minimum unless otherwise noted. Sprinklers shall be provided with proper temperature ratings in areas of high ambient temperature. 3. Sprinkler type and finish shall be as follows: a. In fmished areas with acoustical tile ceiling sprinklers shall be pendent recessed type as indicated on drawings. Recessed sprinklers shall have a chrome-plated finish with chrome-plated recessing cups. 4. Sprinklers manufactured by Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company, Viking Automatic Sprinkler Company, Tyco, or Victaulic, meeting the above specifications shall be considered for approval. G. Shutoff valve supervision shall be manufactured by Potter Electric Company. Devices by Simplex or Potter Roemer Inc., meeting the above specifications will be considered for approval. Devices shall be Model OSYS-U or OSYS-B and Model PIVS-U for post indicator valve. WATER BASED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
8 DOC Cremer Heating and Hot Water Plant Project Number: Ml41l-04 PART 3- EXECUTION 3.1 PIPING APPLICATIONS A. B. Underground Service Entrance Piping: Use ductile iron, mechanical joint pipe and fittings and restrained joints for a minimum of 10 ft. beyond the exterior of structure. Piping on the water service side of the double check backflow assembly shall be galvanized. 3.2 JOINT CONSTRUCTION A. B. C. D. Steel Piping, Grooved Joints: Steel piping joined with grooved fittings shall be joined by a listed combination of fittings, gaskets and grooves. Steel Piping, Threaded Joints: Joint compound or tape shall be applied only to male threads. Apply cold ZRC galvanizing compound to all galvanized pipe sections damaged or cut by jointing processes. Dissimilar Piping Material Joints: Construct joints using adapters or couplings compatible with both piping materials. Use dielectric fittings if both piping materials are metal. Refer to Division 23 Section for dielectric fittings. 3.3 PIPING INSTALLATION A. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. B. Where possible, the bottom of all branch piping shall be above the top of light fixtures installed within lay-in ceilings. C. Use approved fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. D. E. F. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. Unions are not required on flanged devices or in piping installations using grooved joints. Install piping with grooved joints according to manufacturer's written instructions. Construct rigid piping joints, unless otherwise indicated. Install pressure gauges at all pressure switches used in dry systems, preaction systems, pressure maintenance pump controllers, and fire pump controllers. Gauges installed shall be visible from the viewpoint required to observe and adjust the pressure switches. 3.4 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION A. Install sprinlders in suspended ceilings in a regular pattern with the sprinkler center within a 3 inch error circle centered on the target location. 9 DOC Cremer Heating and Hot Water Plant Project Number: Ml of the ceiling tiles narrow dimension from the tile edge except for grooved ceiling tile designed to appear as multiple tiles. Do not install sprinklers at ceiling tile grooves. 3.5 SIGNS AND IDENTIFICATIONS A. Furnish and install all name tags, nameplates, markers, plaques, etc., required for identification of fire suppression system components in accordance with the cunent applicable NFP A Standards and the requirements described in Section MECHANICAL IDENTIFICATION as scheduled below: 1. Furnish piping markers as described in Section for all fire suppression mains piping (i.e. not branch lines) and also for fire suppression piping. 2. Furnish valve Name Tags in accordance with NFPA specification for valves. Valve name tags shall indicate valve function and system name. Valve tags as described in Section are not to apply to fire suppression valves. 3.6 SYSTEM ACCEPTANCE A. The Installing Contractor shall comply with all applicable sections of NFP A 13 and 14 system acceptance standards and also those of local Authorities Having Jurisdiction. The acceptance standards include, but are not limited to: 1. Flushing of piping. 2. Hydrostatic tests. 3. Complete and signed "Material and Test Certificates" for both aboveground and underground piping. B. Authorities Having Jurisdiction and the Owner's representative shall be notified in advance of all tests. Tests shall be conducted in the presence of the Owner and representatives of the governing authorities. END OF SECTION WATER BASED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS
