After all leads are attached to each connector, plug it into the appropriate slot on the SensorNet I/O Module (see Figure 10). Figure 10. Attaching Alarms Alarms Alarms Wire each alarm circuit as follows (see Figure 11): 1. Run a two-wire cable from the location of each alarm sensor to the SensorNet I/O Module. Label each end with the alarm identification. 2. Connect one resistor ( ) from the SensorNet I/O Module Install kit across the alarm sensor's terminals. 3. Connect one lead from a second 1K ohm resistor to one of the alarm sensor's terminals. Connect this resistor's second lead to one wire from the cable to the SensorNet I/O Module. 4. Connect the cable's second wire to the alarm terminal that has one resistor attached. 5. Tighten or solder all connections and insulate with electrical tape, if necessary. Figure 11. Supervised Alarm Installation Alarm Sensor 1KΩ 1KΩ to SensorNet I/O Module With resistors installed, the unit detects the four states and voltages shown in the following table. In addition, the supporting video system can identify the state of each switch and line, and display their condition on its status screen. This allows the SensorNet I/O Module to detect open circuits or shorts in the two-wire cable connecting the alarm sensor to the unit. Place resistors at the alarm end of the line, as close as possible to the alarm switch. This allows shorts or opens at any point between the resistors and the SensorNet I/O Module to be detected. The twisted pair cable's maximum resistance should be less than 200 ohms. 22AWG copper wire (19 ohms per 305m (1000ft) at 50 C) allows a distance of up to 1.6km (1 mile) for a twisted pair. With no resistors installed, the unit detects only the two non-supervised states. It cannot determine whether the state is set by the alarm switch or line trouble. In this configuration, it is also not possible to trigger an alarm on a troubled (line open or short) condition. Attaching Communications Alarm Sources These alarms are initiated by a separate computer-based alarm tracking system that outputs an alarm message on its RS-232 or RS-422 port whenever an alarm occurs. The SensorNet I/O Module comes set up for attaching an RS- 232 input line. via RS-422 requires a jumper change on the controller board (see procedures on page 1) and use of a different connector and SensorNet I/O Module port.
