6 Purpose of the User Guide This User Guide describes the Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) and explains step-by-step how to install, operate, maintain and repair this equipment. Before installing this product, please take a few moments to read the User Guide and review the diagrams and safety information in the instruction packet. You also should review manuals covering associated equipment in your system. This review won t take long, and it could save you valuable installation and operating time later. How the Guide is Organized Symbols have been used to help organize the User Guide and call your attention to important information regarding safe installation and operation. 7 Using the Level Alarm Control Each Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) is designed to work within a blending system or other similar applications consisting of: TrueBlend Blenders (TB45-TB3500 models) Non-Conair blenders Non-blender applications 1 Introduction Separate instructions are provided for TrueBlend blenders and should be referred to as needed to fully understand the operation of the entire system. Your Responsibility as a User You must be familiar with all safety procedures concerning installation, operation and maintenance of this equipment. Responsible safety procedures include: Thorough review of this User Guide, paying particular attention to hazard warnings, appendices and related diagrams. Thorough review of the equipment itself, with careful attention to voltage sources, intended use and warning labels. Thorough review of instruction manuals for associated equipment. Step-by-step adherence to instructions outlined in this User Guide. Introduction l 1-3

All wiring, disconnects, and fuses should be installed by qualified electrical technicians in accordance with electrical codes in your region. Always maintain a safe ground. Do not operate the equipment at power levels other than what is specified on the machine serial tag and data plate. WARNING: Voltage hazard This equipment is powered by single-phase alternating current, as specified on the machine serial tag and data plate. CAUTION: Voltage hazard Always disconnect and lock out the main power sources before making electrical connections. 9 How to Use the Lockout Device CAUTION: Before performing maintenance or repairs on this product, you should disconnect and lockout electrical power sources to the blender to prevent injury from unexpected energization or start-up. A lockable device has been provided to isolate the blender from potentially hazardous electricity. Lockout is the preferred method of isolating machines or equipment from energy sources. Your Conair product is equipped with the lockout device pictured below. To use the lockout device: 1 Introduction 1 Stop or turn off the equipment. 2 Isolate the equipment from the electric power. Turn the rotary disconnect switch to the OFF, or O position. 3 Secure the device with an assigned lock or tag. Insert a lock or tag in the holes to prevent movement. 4 The equipment is now locked out. WARNING: Before removing lockout devices and returning switches to the ON position, make sure that all personnel are clear of the machine, tools have been removed, and all safety guards reinstalled. To restore power to the dryer, turn the rotary disconnect back to the ON position: 1 Remove the lock or tag. 2 Turn the rotary disconnect switch to the ON or I position. Introduction l 1-5

12 What is the Level Alarm Control? The Conair Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) is a simple-to-use early warning detection system for your blending equipment that is capable of monitoring up to six levels of material at one blender with an extra input for auxiliary needs, typically a surge bin or other material supply. Selector switches can be positioned to monitor high or low material levels depending on your preference or blender application. Audible and visual alarms indicate an excess or shortage of material within a blender. The alarm indicates exactly which material bin is alarming with an associated LED. Optional remote warning alarms can be connected to your control to alert you to alarm conditions from remote locations with audible and/or visual indicators. 2-2 l Description

16 Unpacking the Boxes The Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) comes in one box. Depending on the model and options ordered, the box could include: Level Alarm Control Capacitance Sensors Wiring Diagram User Guide 1 Carefully remove the LAC-1 and its components from their shipping container(s). 2 Remove all packing material, protective paper, tape, and plastic. 3 Carefully inspect all components to make sure no damage occurred during shipping, and that you have all the necessary hardware. 4 Take a moment to record serial numbers and electrical power specifications in the blanks provided on the back of the User Guide s title page. The information will be helpful if you ever need service or parts. 5 You are now ready to begin installation. Preparing for Installation The Level Alarm Sensor (LAC-1) is easy to install if you plan the location and prepare the mounting area properly. 1 Make sure the mounting area provides: r A grounded power source supplying the voltage and correct current for the LAC-1. Check the control s serial tag for the correct amps, voltage, phase, and cycles. Field wiring should be completed by a qualified personnel to the planned location for the control. All electrical wiring should comply with your region s electrical codes. 3-2 l Installation r Minimum clearance for safe operation and maintenance. You should maintain 12 in. {305 mm} clearance on all sides of the LAC-1.

17 Installation Mounting When installing the Level Alarm Sensor (LAC-1) locate the control on the left-side of the blender cabinet. This is to ensure adequate spacing and visibility. The Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) mounts to the blender cabinet using four (4) self-tapping ø0.31 inch {8 mm} screws. Mounting location of the LAC-1 will be dependent upon blender model. Refer to your installation diagram (# ) and Appendix B for model specific mounting location recommendations. WARNING: You are responsible for the structural integrity of this installation. 2 TIP: Install the LAC-1 to the blender cabinet before making any wire connections. 3 Installation Front Left-side as viewed from the front door To mount the LAC-1 control box: 1 Locate the proper mounting area on the left-side of the blender s cabinet. Refer to your installation diagram (# ) and Appendix B for model specific mounting location recommendations. 2 Use the four (4) supplied self-tapping screws to secure the control box to the blender s cabinet with an appropriately sized wrench or socket. 18 Installation Capacitance Sensors Individual capacitance sensors will need to be mounted to the blender s bin or sight glass to monitor material levels within the blender s material bin. To mount the capacitance sensor: 1 Locate the material bin(s) that are to be monitored (up to 6 with 1 additional sensor for auxiliary use). Sight glass Plastic washer (2) 2 Remove the blender s sight glass(es), if the sensors are to be mounted in the sight glass. Do this by removing the screws and internal retaining clip that secures the sight glass to the material bin or locate and drill a 1-3/16 inch {30.2 mm} hole as shown on the installation diagram # (shipped with your equipment). 3 Using the LAC-1 s supplied sight glass(es) or the 1-3/16 in. {30.2 mm} hole in the bin, mount the capacitance sensor, by inserting the sensor through the predrilled hole. 4 Use one (1) of the supplied plastic washers on the sensor to set the depth the sensor will protrude into the material bin (0.875 inch {22.2 mm} is recommended), by rotating the bolt clockwise or counterclockwise along the sensor s threaded section. 5 Use the second plastic washer on the opposite side of the sight glass or bin to secure the sensor into place, tighten. 6 Rotate the sight glass 180 to change the monitored level of material within the blender s material bin. Depending on the amount of material that is required, the sensor location can be changed to high or low by rotating the sight glass. 7 Reattach the new sight glass along with the capacitance sensor back to the blender s sight glass opening, using original hardware. Ensure that the internal retaining clip is in place and that all the hardware has been used in. 3-4 l Installation

19 Installation Connecting Capacitance Sensors to the Level Alarm Control Each capacitance sensor will need to be connected to the LAC-1 (1-7). Individual wires with connectors are used to make this connection. Ensure proper wiring by matching the material bin number with the correct connection terminal on the LAC-1. Connection Terminals Connector 3 Installation To connect the capacitance sensors: 1 Use the supplied wiring and connector that is attached to each sensor to plug into the corresponding terminal found on the LAC-1 (1-7). Screws (2) 2 Use the integrated screws (2) to the tighten the sensor s connector to the LAC-1. Use an appropriately sized screwdriver. Installation Detachable Capacitance Sensors Capacitance sensors are available with detachable cables to allow easy material bin removal on blender models with removable bins. The sensor s connectors attach to the LAC-1 using the same method described above. However, the detachable sensor will have an additional connector inline on the sensor cable. To connect the inline cable connector: 1 Connect the male and female connectors of the detachable sensor cable. 2 Tighten the the two (2) screws on the sensor s male connector to the female connector with an appropriately sized screwdriver. 20 Connecting Main Power 110V/60Hz CAUTION: Always disconnect and lock out the main power sources before making electrical connections. Electrical connections should be made only by qualified personnel. IMPORTANT: Always refer to the wiring diagrams that came with your equipment to locate specific electrical components. To connect the LAC-1 to power source: 1 Connect the LAC-1 s plug into a 110V power source. Connecting Main Power 220V/50Hz WARNING: Improper installation, operation, or ser vicing may result in equipment damage or personal injur y. This equipment should be installed, adjusted, and serviced by a qualified technical personnel who is familiar with the construction, operation and potential hazards of this type of machine. All wiring, disconnects, and fuses should be installed by a qualified electrical technician in accordance with electrical codes in your region. To connect the LAC-1 to power source: 1 Refer to the wiring diagrams that were shipped with your LAC-1 for the proper wiring procedures. It is necessary to add a plug to the supplied wiring harness for the 220 V LAC-1 model. (Brown wire is positive, blue is negative and green/yellow is ground.) 3-6 l Installation

22 Preparing the Level Alarm Control for Operation Before operation of the Level Alarm Control (LAC-1): 1 Turn the all High/Low monitoring switches to Off, by positioning the switch to its center. 2 Turn the main power On/Off toggle switch to On. A LED indicator light above the word Power will be illuminated to show that the LAC-1 is activated. 23 Level Alarm Control Operation The Level Alarm Control (LAC-1) can be configured to monitor high or low material levels within a blender or other material bins. For blenders with high throughputs the LAC-1 s capacitance sensors can be located higher on the blender s material sight glass or bin to provide earlier warning for material levels. Refer to LAC-1 mounting and wiring diagrams and Appendix B for capacitance sensor installation/wiring. See also, Installation Section in this manual entitled, Installation, Capacitance Sensors. For applications that require lower blender throughputs the capacitance sensor can be located lower on the blender s material sight glass or bin. Refer to LAC-1 mounting and wiring diagrams and Appendix B for capacitance sensor installation/wiring. 24 Level Alarm Control Operation (continued) The LAC-1 can be configured to monitor high or low levels of material with a blender s material hopper. By using the toggle switches located on the front of the control the capacitance sensor will trigger an alarm if the material falls below the sensor (Low) or rises above the sensor (High). Individual LED indicators on the LAC-1 s control will illuminate displaying the exact capacitance sensor and associated material bin hopper that has alarmed. 25 Level Alarm Control Operation (continued) To configure the monitoring method of each material bin (up to 6 and 1 auxiliary) on your blender: 1 Determine which material bin(s) on the blender require high or low material monitoring. 2 Select the position of the high or low toggle switch of the corresponding material bin hopper on the LAC-1 s front control. The LAC-1 has seven selectable material monitoring toggle switches. The seventh position can be used with an auxiliary source, such as a surge bin. The above procedure will still apply. Level Alarm Control Alarm Acknowledgement 4 Operation The LAC-1 will activate visual and audible alarm indicators when a material bin s material source is above or below its High or Low setting. To silence an alarm: 1 Press the Alarm Silence button located on the LAC-1 s control. 2 Determine which material bin(s) on the blender has alarmed by viewing the associated LED indicator located above the alarming material bin label. 26 Adjusting the Capacitance Sensor The LAC-1 s capacitance sensors will need to be adjusted to allow it to detect the material that you are blending or to detect different types of material. To adjust the capacitive sensor: 1 Locate the sensor adjustment screw that is positioned on the corded end of the sensor. 2 Adjustments should be made with no material in the bin. Adjust the sensor by rotating the screw clockwise for increased sensitivity until the sensor s LED is on, to decrease sensitivity rotate the screw counterclockwise to decrease sensitivity until the sensor s LED is off. In both cases, rotate the screw an additional 90 to allow for dust buildup and temperature changes. 0 NOTE: The sensors for this application are wired N.O. (normally open). The circuit will close and the sensor s LED will energize when material covers the sensor. Indication Light Adjustment Screw 4-6 l Operation

27 Dr y Contacts Connection The LAC-1 has one additional connection terminal that has one N.O. (normally open) and one N.C. (normally closed) dry contact that can be used to interface with other processing equipment or monitoring devices. Two dry contact voltages are available 8 amps or 10 amps). (i.e. an output used with an alarm connected to a PC monitoring system) See Installation Section entitled, Connecting Capacitance Sensors to the Level Alarm Control, for instructions to connect the Dry Contacts. Dry Contact Terminal (No. 8) Additional Warning Outputs Additional warning outputs are available to allow for additional blender material warning notification. Two outlets on the LAC-1 provide power for remote warning indicators. The top outlet will supply a line voltage of 110V or 220V power (depending on the LAC-1 model) until an alarm condition is activated. The bottom output will supply 2.5 amps or 1.3 amps power when an alarm condition has been activated. 4 Operation Satisfactory State Outlet Alarm State Outlet Operation l 4-7

30 Preventative Maintenance Checklist Routine maintenance will ensure optimum operation and performance of the Level Alarm Control (LAC-1). We recommend the following maintenance schedule and tasks. Ever y six months r Inspect all wiring connections Power and cable connections between the LAC-1 and the capacitance sensors may become loose or wires may become worn. Tighten any loose connections and replace any wire or cable that has become worn or damaged. r Inspect capacitance sensor mounting locations Check for loose or dirty capacitance sensors. Capacitance sensors that are dusty or dirty will trigger faults material level warning signals. r Inspect the installation Check installed LAC-1 hardware to make sure that the installation is secure. r Inspect the fuse Check LAC-1 s fuse, replace as necessary. 5-2 l Maintenance

31 Replacing the Fuse The Level Alarm Control requires a 5 amp fuse for the 110V model and a 2.5 amp fuse for the 220V model. To replace the fuse for either model: Replacement fuses are available from Conair. Contact Conair Parts (800) From outside of the United States, call: (814) Unscrew and remove the fuse cap at the bottom of the LAC-1. Fuse Cap CAUTION: Always disconnect and lock out the main power sources before making electrical connections. Electrical connections should be made only by qualified personnel. 2 Remove the old fuse. Ensure to replace the fuse with the same amperage rating as the fuse that is being removed. 3 Replace fuse cap. IMPORTANT: Always refer to the wiring diagrams that came with your equipment to locate specific electrical components. 34 Before Beginning You can avoid most problems by following the recommended installation and maintenance procedures outlined in this User Guide. If you do have a problem, this section will help you determine what caused it and how to fix it. Before you begin troubleshooting: o Find the wiring diagrams that were shipped with your equipment. These diagrams are the best reference for correcting a problem. The diagrams also will note any custom features, such as special wiring or control options, not covered in this User Guide. o Verify that you have manuals for other equipment in the process line. Solving problems may require troubleshooting malfunctions or incorrect operating procedures on other pieces of equipment. A Few Words of Caution WARNING: This machine should be adjusted and serviced only by qualified technical personnel who are familiar with construction and operation of this type of equipment. WARNING: Voltage hazard. Troubleshooting the electrical system of this equipment requires use of precision electronic measuring equipment, and may require access to the electrical enclosure while power is on. Exposure to potentially harmful voltage levels may be unavoidable. These troubleshooting procedures should be performed only by qualified electrical technicians who know how to use this precision electronic equipment and who understand the hazards involved. WARNING: Disconnect power and compressed air before servicing. Always disconnect and lock out power and compressed air supplied to this equipment before performing maintenance or repair. Failure to do so could result in personal injury caused by the unexpected energization of this equipment. CAUTION: Wear eye protection. If you use compressed air to clean the equipment, you must wear eye protection and observe all OSHA and other safety regulations pertaining to the use of compressed air. 6-2 l Troubleshooting

See Operation Section entitled, Preparing the Level Alarm Control for Operation. Ensure main fuse is operating. See Maintenance Section entitled, Replacing the Fuse. Ensure the LAC-1 has power, see Installation Section entitled, Connecting Main Power. Capacitance sensor s connection may be loose. Check all capacitance sensor connections, resecure if necessary. Capacitance sensor is not adjusted properly. Readjust capacitance sensor. See Operation Section entitled, Adjusting the Capacitance Level Sensor. Excessive alarm indications. Capacitance sensor is too low or too high in the blender s sight glass or bin. Adjust the capacitance sensor s height within the sight glass or bin. See Installation Section entitled, Installation, Capacitance Sensor. Capacitance sensor is not adjusted properly. Readjust capacitance sensor. See Operation Section entitled, Adjusting the Capacitance Level Sensor. LAC-1 does not alarm before the blender runs out of material. Capacitance sensor is too low in the blender s sight glass or bin. Adjust the capacitance sensor s height within the sight glass or bin. 37 Equipment Guarantee Conair guarantees the machinery and equipment on this order, for a period as defined in the quotation from date of shipment, against defects in material and workmanship under the normal use and service for which it was recommended (except for parts that are typically replaced after normal usage, such as filters, liner plates, etc.). Conair s guarantee is limited to replacing, at our option, the part or parts determined by us to be defective after examination. The customer assumes the cost of transportation of the part or parts to and from the factory. Performance Warranty Conair warrants that this equipment will perform at or above the ratings stated in specific quotations covering the equipment or as detailed in engineering specifications, provided the equipment is applied, installed, operated and maintained in the recommended manner as outlined in our quotation or specifications. Should performance not meet warranted levels, Conair at its discretion will exercise one of the following options: Inspect the equipment and perform alterations or adjustments to satisfy performance claims. (Charges for such inspections and corrections will be waived unless failure to meet warranty is due to misapplication, improper installation, poor maintenance practices or improper operation.) Replace the original equipment with other Conair equipment that will meet original performance claims at no extra cost to the customer. Refund the invoiced cost to the customer. Credit is subject to prior notice by the customer at which time a Return Goods Authorization Number (RGA) will be issued by Conair s Service Department. Returned equipment must be well crated and in proper operating condition, including all parts. Returns must be prepaid. Purchaser must notify Conair in writing of any claim and provide a customer receipt and other evidence that a claim is being made. Warranty Limitations Except for the Equipment Guarantee and Performance Warranty stated above, Conair disclaims all other warranties with respect to the equipment, express or implied, arising by operation of law, course of dealing, usage of trade or otherwise, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
