In recent times we have seen an enormous wave of enthusiasm in the field of Industrial Automation promoting spread spectrum technology with serial data and Ethernet WLAN nodes, used to move large amounts of data. These solutions eliminate the need for cabling (Ethernet cables, serial data or Fieldbus cables) routed from node to node. But there still exists a large demand for solutions that eliminate the need for parallel Training is everything. wiring from field sensors or actuators back to the controller. 3 A message from your DVP Access to ISA standards When you ask an ISA member their reasons for being a member, each one will have their unique list. But somewhere on that list will be Access to ISA Standards. Have you ever wondered what an ISA standard is and what goes in its development and implementation? Let me indulge. Established in 1945, ISA has been a standards writing organization, developing consensus standards for manufacturing and control systems security, factory automation, power plants, computer technology, communication and more. ISA is accredited by ANSI- American National Standards Institute. There are more that 150 standards currently published and practiced around the world. Many governmental agencies have also endorsed or adopted ISA standards. As we know, ISA is a volunteer organization; hence, the standards are also developed by volunteer committees. There are currently over 2000 volunteers involved in various committees helping develop the standards of the future. If you attend ISA s national conference and exhibits, you will see the committees at work. Most of them meet several times a year via teleconference and typically one face-to-face meeting during the ISA conference. Each of the committees has different goals but following underlying commonality -- Promote safety, environmental issues, and technical excellence through standards Cover symbols, definitions, process measurement and control, signal transmission, and industry-specific applications provide practical guidance to engineers, designers, and technicians, enabling them to meet the mandates of increased competition and to work better, faster, and more economically The standards should be of global nature so that it can be implemented and adopted through out the world ISA has over 20 divisions that support committees in their areas of expertise. Over the years the standards committees have helped in developing ISA training and assisted in developing ISA conferences. Some of the recent ISA standards have involved multiple divisions to tap the skills and backgrounds of individual necessary to search and write such standards. You think you are ready to contribute or you think there is an opportunity to create a standard? One can start by contacting a division vice president and setting up a survey committee to explore the need for a standard. Survey committees can be formed to research related work in the industry, to establish the need for a standard, to identify committee members, and then, based on the results of their study, to recommend a scope and a purpose to the ISA s Standards and Practices Board. As an ISA member you have access to the ISA standards for viewing for annual fees of $25. Printed copies of ISA standards can be ordered from ISA. Let me know if you want to participate or see a need. I can certainly facilitate. Raj Adani, DVP- District 11, Raj.adani@member.isa.org Patten Systems, Inc. 6 Standards and Practices New committee to focus on wireless technology Research Triangle Park, NC (17 February 2005) - A new ISA standards committee, ISA-SP100, has been established to create standards, recommended practices, and/or technical reports to define procedures for implementing wireless systems in the automation and control environment at the field level. Committee Chair Wayne Manges of Oak Ridge National Laboratory expects their work to assure the confidence in and integrity of wireless technology, and provide criteria for implementing it in manufacturing automation and control systems. Technology covered will include: * Field sensors used for monitoring, control, alarm, and shutdown. * Wireless technology whose uses include real time field-to-business systems. * Fluid processing, material processing, and discrete parts manufacturing. The committee will address various aspects of wireless manufacturing and control systems technology, including the environment in which it is deployed, the technology life cycle, and applications. According to Manges, the new standards will assure successful system deployment, help identify and address any vulnerabilities, and improve overall system performance by eliminating failure modes. ISA recognizes that in order to exploit emerging wireless opportunities to improve industrial systems, collaboration among vendors, R&D communities, and end users is essential. Committee members include: 3e Technologies International Inc., Adaptive Instruments Corp., Apprion Inc., BP America Inc., CMC Associates, Emerson Process Management, Endress+Hauser, Exxonmobil Research & Engineering, Honeywell, Invensys I/A, Medida Inc., Motorola Labs, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oceana Sensor, Omnex Control Systems Inc., OPTI Canada Inc., Shell, and Syncrude Canada Ltd. 7 Industry News Moore Industries receives engineering award North Hills, Calif Moore Industries-International, Inc., a world leader in interface instruments for industrial process control, system integration, and factory automation has earned the San Fernando Valley Engineers Council Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award for exceptional commitment to safety and successful completion of IEC Certification. The Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award recognizes organizations that have completed engineering projects which, because of their scope or unique character, are outstanding and deserving of merit. Joseph Hage, vice president of engineering and Moore Industries IEC Safety Team leader accepted this award on behalf of the team at the Engineers Council 50th Anniversary National Engineers Week Honors & Awards Banquet on February 26, 2005 at the Sportsmen s Lodge in Studio City, Calif. IEC is a process based standard that applies to the entire life cycle of a product, from conception and design stages, through its manufacturing, application, maintenance, and ultimately final decommissioning. Moore Industries is the first US company to successfully obtain IEC certification to design and manufacture process instrumentation hardware for safety related applications and has used this achievement as a driving force to educate industry leaders, government bodies, manufacturers, end users, system integrators and other entities on the importance of safety. In addition, Moore Industries is a founding member of an IEC consortium in Europe. by Larry Flanagan, weber Sensors In the $3 billion dollar world market of flow metering, a little known jewel is gradually finding its way to acclaim, the calorimetric flow sensor. Pioneered by weber Sensors founder, Mr. Gunther Weber, the use of the calorimetric principle in flow is now a standard in the industry. Significant advances over the past decade have enabled the calorimetric sensor to assume a very active and respected role in flow switching and flow metering of both liquids and gaseous mediums. The most common use of these sensors is in flow-no flow applications for detecting the movement of air or liquids. Popular for their solid state construction with no moving parts, the calorimetric flow sensor is impervious to particulate matter that spells doom for mechanical type devices. Historically, the calorimetric switching devices have been costly in comparison to mechanical switches, but with new technological breakthroughs in both electronic and mechanical construction, there are, now available, units that compete directly with their primitive counterparts. Flow metering has also become a substantive part of the calorimetric sensor s function. The sensing technology, having no moving parts, allows measurement of flows so low as to be below the inertia threshold of turbine or paddlewheel sensors. This has made them very popular for chemical dosing, leak detection, etc. Also, extended range calorimetric sensors are now available that can enable measurements of much higher flow rates (up to 60 feet per second for some liquids) than Gus Elias (left), Fred Adt, Christine Whan, Deanna Esterwold, Joseph Hage (Project Leader), Jon Wexler, Mike Young, Kristina Balobeck and Shirley Lai. For more information, contact Moore Industries-International, Inc., Schoenborn St., North Hills, CA 91343, U.S.A.; Telephone: (818) ; FAX: (818) ; info@miinet.com; Web Site: Application notes What is this thing called calorimetric? Photo courtesy Moore Industries Int l previously thought possible with calorimetric technology. The traditional calorimetric technology utilizes two PTC Thermistors, one of which is heated a predetermined amount above the other, which monitors the medium temperature. Flow of the medium conducts heat away from the sensor probe and the corresponding change in the heated Thermistor s resistance value is then amplified, linearized and converted into an output (switching or analog depending upon sensor type) proportional to the rate of flow. The fact that calorimetric sensors do not require the medium to be electrically conductive (as would a mag meter for example) makes measurements of polymers, oil, grease, and numerous other mediums possible. The technology also is not based upon suspended particles for measurement accuracy (as would be the case with doppler type meters). The addition of optional specialty metals for use in the calorimetric construction (such as Hastelloy, Monel, Titanium etc.) allows measurements of innumerable aggressive medium such as chemicals and acids. Wireless Technologies in Industrial Applications The ease in deploying wireless technologies in our offices and homes has contributed to massive growth on a global basis that is not expected to slow down any time soon. Applying and installing wireless products in industrial environments, though, requires a little more thought and planning. The trick is determining which technology best fits a specific application requirement. This presentation will review the available technologies, current application successes, and future technology directions. We will compare proprietary spread spectrum, the emerging 802.xx standards, and other long standing technology implementations. Rob Henley is the president & founder of ioselect Incorporated, a San Diego-based company focused on industrial connectivity products and solutions (both wired and wireless) for the process control, factory automation, and test & measurement markets. Ethernet Basics & Considerations for the Plant Floor Ethernet has long been used as the de-facto network solution for front office environments all over the world. Its acceptance and popularity have slowly found its way to the plant floor and factory automation environments. Although considered a total solution, Ethernet is merely a small part of the overall network solution. This presentation will cover not only the physical components used with Ethernet but will look at the protocols that run over Ethernet and give you a broad perspective about what you should consider before implementing Ethernet at the plant floor level. Ethernet, when applied properly, can be a very efficient and powerful solution for process control and data acquisition.industries- International, Inc. 15 Book review Successful Instrumentation and Control Systems Design by Michael D Whitt Reviewed by Nick Sands, Nicholas.P.Sands@USA.dupont.com This book, by Raytheon project engineer and manager Michael Whitt, covers the basics of instrumentation and control (I&C) design for projects in a way unlike any other. Only a truly experienced project leader could reveal the secrets that Whitt shares. Even after a half dozen major DCS projects, I found new insights in Successful Instrumentation and Control Systems Design. If you want to excel in I&C project work, this is a must read. The book, like many projects, is divided into three parts, each more detailed than the one before. The first part gives an overview of the project process. In the second part, Whitt shares design basics, from background information to good design practices for instrumentation and control systems. Part three is about execution of design. Using an example problem, Whitt completes the engineering documentation for the project, highlighting the connections to good project management and good design covered in the earlier chapters. Projects 101 is the first part, giving an overview of the organization and process of a project. Whitt explains the different types of projects and why the old adage is true: a project can meet any two of three objectives; cheap, good, or fast. Project structure, flow, and deliverables are outlined. The roles and the responsibilities for the team are defined. The basics of project management, scope, estimate, and schedule, are discussed, along with why they are important to the project. Design 101 is the second part, giving many practical tips. Whitt starts with some background on ranges and scaling, then covers wiring practices, with some good information on electrical classification. A whole chapter is dedicated to control systems, including background on PLCs, typical system functionality, I/O count and arrangement, networking, and HMIs. While this is a very good section there is no comment about ensuring the right upstream and downstream diameters for flowmeters. Documentation 101 is the third part, using an example to apply the design practices in Part II and the management practices in part I. These chapters are full of the design documents generated as instruments are added, cables and conduits are selected and sized, I/O blocks are specified, and construction design package is assembled. Whitt uses the project tools to coordinate information and generate estimates and bill of materials. Its clearly a project design book since construction, checkout and startup are covered in less than three pages at the very end. Whitt filled a void in the library of control books by writing Successful Instrumentation and Control Systems Design. Too often designers, engineers, and project managers learn good project practices the hard way, by first doing it wrong. Whitt shows the project as a product in itself, and how the many parts are connected. Even project management is critical to the success of a project despite what you may read about project managers (see G K McMillan s early books). There is an optional CD of project tools. This is a book definitely worth buying, and it s available from ISA for $79 (member price) or with the toolkit CD for $89.
