2 Code no Installation manual detector and controller Page 2/30 INSTALLATION IN GENERAL Controller The controller shall preferable be installed at a central place, where personnel is present at all times, i.e. in the control room. The controller shall be protected from dirt and water coming along the wall or the mounting plate. The controller shall not be installed in the area under monitoring, e.g. in a refrigeration compressor room. In constraining situations, as minimum requirement gas alarming sound and/or flashing equipment shall be installed at the entrance of the room. Do not install any third-party components or devices on the gas detection controller. Use of uninterrupted power source is recommended to maintain monitoring during power outage. A map containing all gas detector and alarm device locations shall be available near the gas detection controller. It is also advisable to provide any site-specific instructions for alarm events. Gas detection controller and gas detectors require regular maintenance. The controller and detectors shall be maintained at the same time to ensure reliable operation of the system. It is recommended to test any external alarm functionality during the maintenance. Function of the Relays Ensure the compatibility of the load and relays beforehand. The relays in the AVACO SYSTEMS products are designed for resistive load. When connecting capacitive / inductive loads, e.g. flashes or contactors, the load must be adapted appropriate to the relays. In most cases this can be done by connecting a metal oxide varistor or an RC filter parallel to the relay tips. Apply relay controls only after successful system test. Gas Detectors The gas detectors need regular maintenance. The accessibility has to be taken into account when choosing the installation place, if necessary, maintenance platforms has to be arranged. Do not expose gas detectors to strong infrared radiation or steam clouds. Gas detectors are to be installed as late as possible during construction work to avoid any damage due to welding and painting. However, installation and stabilization must be carried out before using any gases or liquids the detectors are to measure. Stabilization time is 2 to 4 days or more depending on sensor type and temperature unless otherwise noted. Bypass all relay controls during the stabilization.
3 Installation manual detector and controller Code no Page 3/30 To protect the gas detector from dirt and moisture the casing has to be installed with the sensor protection cover directed downwards. Also, the cabling shall be done from below for the same reasons. When the cabling in constraining situations is done from above, the gland has to be sealed properly. During gas detector installation or when making electrical changes into the gas detection system, the power must be disconnected to prevent damage. The gas detector shall be assembled near to a presumptive leakage place to achieve a fast response, however, the density of the gas shall be taken into account when defining the assembly height. when monitoring gases, which are heavier than air the gas detectors shall be assembled at a height of cm from the floor level. Thus, there is enough space between the gas detector and the floor for the maintenance of the gas detector and for the cleaning of the floor. If there are possibilities of mechanical damage, a protection shield shall be assembled around the sensor. when monitoring gases, which are lighter than air the gas detectors shall be assembled at or near to the ceiling. when the density for the measured gas is approximately the same as for air the gas detectors shall be installed at the breathing height. Install splash protection in areas where detectors are exposed to water. (see page 7, consult manufacturer for more information) A heated enclosure may be required when using the detector outside of normal operating temperature and/or humidity. The detectors are meant for alarm limit based detection of gases and solvents. These devices require regular maintenance and testing to ensure correct operation. Full calibration must be done at least once a year and testing more often. On-site safety statement will define the correct test interval. Test gas pressure at detector gas inlet shall be within ±10% of nominal air pressure. Calibration and test gas concentration must not exceed the range of the detector. In case of flammable gas the concentration must be 0 50 %LEL. Excess gas concentration may damage the sensor element. Make sure the gas flow at the calibration adapter is unobstructed. Contact your dealer for most of calibration gases. In unclear situations regarding the installation of the gas detectors, kindly contact DETECTOR Oy, or the local authorities for occupational health and safety or the fire brigade.
4 Code no Installation manual detector and controller Page 4/30 Cabling The gas detectors are cabled to the controllers as own circuits, by e.g. JAMAK 2x(2+1)x0.5 mm 2 or by an equivalent cable. At ATEX sites standard EN will specify the cable type. The type of the gas detector defines the number of wires in the cable. If the cable is exposed for vandalism or mechanical stress, an armoured cable shall be used. Signal cable shields are grounded only from the controller to prevent ground current loops. If the gas detector casing is not earth connected, the signal cable shield shall be connected to the casing. When using other than recommended cable, correct operation of the system is not guaranteed. The type of the gas detector, the supply voltage and the cable cross-section area defines the maximum cable length. It is recommended to use the following formula for calculating the maximum cable length, when the distance is over 300 m. The formula is valid for AVACO SYSTEMS gas detectors, when the cable cross section area, the maximum allowed loss of voltage, the specific resistance of the used cable material and the power consumption of the gas detector are known. Wire area [mm 2 ] * Voltage Loss [V] Cable [m]= 2 * Detector Current [A] * Wire Resistance Factor [ Ω m * mm2 ] Formula 1, calculation of the maximum cable length. Voltage Loss: The minimum required voltage for the gas detector is subtracted from the supply voltage; the result is the biggest allowed loss of voltage in the cable, which is used in the formula as voltage loss. Detector Current: The current consumption in Ampere written on the equipment plate or in the inspection sheet for the equipment. Wire Area: The wire cross section area in square millimetres. Wire Resistance Factor: The specific resistance for the wire material, for copper Ω/m*mm 2. The result for cable length is expressed in meters. For example, a wire with a maximum voltage loss of 10V, cross section area of 0.8 mm 2 and with gas detector current consumption of 205 ma, the maximum cable length is calculated to be approximately m.

Mechanical Installation of the gas detectors All gas detectors are enclosed in IP54 metallic casing and delivered with insulating mounting base. The sensor, sensor cover and electronics inside the case varies according the model and features. Earth bonding connector is found at the bottom part of the casing. Install cable entry at downwards position to prevent water from entering the casing. Do not remove the instrument label. Stainless steel double skin weather enclosures are available (see page 7). The protector prevents, e.g. snow, rain, water from cleaning devices. The splash protector parts include the bottom plate, top plate, rain guard and pipe mount kit. The parts are separately available to suite the needs on-site. Figure 5, Gas detector casing dimensions and attachment holes.
