DSPA-5 User Manual Product Information, Usage, Preperation and Deployment guidelines for users of the DSPA -5
Thank you for your purchase! We thank you for the purchase of the DSPA-5, the most efficient intervention tool against indoor fires for first responders and fire fighters. The DSPA-5 is a small, handheld and unpressurized device. It s developed as an intervention tool which can be used for to fight indoor fires. The DSPA-5 is suitable to fight class A, B, C and F fires (according to EN2) and class A, B, C and K fires (according to NFPA). After activation of the DSPA-5, a cloud of aerosol is generated which interrupts the chain reaction in the flames, knocking down the fire. This manual contains information and guidelines for the user with regards to usage, principles of operation, effect, storage etc. We strongly recommend that users of the DSPA-5 study this manual before using the device. Kind regards, Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 1

1. The Product The DSPA-5 The DSPA-5 consists of the DSPA-5 Generator ( generator ) and the DSPA-5 starter ( starter ). You will find both parts separately in the box. To make the device ready for operation, you will need to screw the starter into the opening of the generator. 1. Starter DSPA-5 2. DSPA-5 Generator The DSPA-5 (see below figure) consists of a body (1), which stores the aerosol forming compound (2). Into the opening on the side of the generator (4) the starter (5) can be installed. Use the bracket (6) to hold, move and throw the device while operating. Once activated the aerosol will be released through the slit (7) around the device (360 ) DSPA body 2 solid aerosol forming compound 3 protective layer 4 opening for starter 5 - starter 6 - bracket 7 nozzle / opening for aerosol release Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 3
2. Effect After the starter is activated, the non-pressurized solid aerosol forming compound will be transformed into the extinguishing agent: aerosol. The active substances of the DSPA aerosol are solid micro particles that fill the compartment completely and will stay there for a considerable amount of time. DSPA Aerosol works as an anti-catalytic and as a result the energy will be drained from the fire and flames will be extinguished within seconds. In general one DSPA-5 can be used to fight fires in rooms up to 150m 3 / 5300 ft 3 considering there are no big (ventilation) holes or openings. After activation, the aerosol will be released within approx.. 25 seconds. In a properly sealed room, the aerosol stays airborne for a considerable amount of time (up to 60 mins!). As time progresses the aerosol particles will slowly precipitate or disappear through small cracks and holes. The speed in which this happens, depends on the size and quantity of these openings. The result of deploying a DSPA-5 depends on the following factors: Pre-burning time A full extinguishment will be achieved when the DSPA-5 is used on a fire with a very short pre-burning time. When faced with a fully developed fire, the DSPA-5 will knock the flames down, the fire will not spread anymore. Fire fighters will have to extinguish possible remaining hot spots by conventional means. Only a very small amount of water (or other agent) is necessary to do this. Openings and ventilation If a room can be sealed completely, the aerosol will work longer and more effectively. If a room has many openings like broken windows or opened doors and/or a ventilation system that can cause the loss of aerosol, the aerosol will work shorter and less effective. After deployment, the aerosol will immediately interrupt the chemical reaction inside the flames. The flames will disappear and the fire will be extinguished or brought down to a minimum. The DSPA-5 will also lower the average temperature in the room. When fighting fully developed fires, flashovers or backdrafts, the temperature can be brought down several hundreds of degrees. For fire fighters this will increase their safety and give them an opportunity to prevent further fire spread to other rooms or buildings. All users should follow a training how to use the DSPA-5. Usage is recommended when the flames are visible and the user can activate and deploy the device safely from outside of the room or building. If you are not a trained fire fighter, you should never enter a burning building or room. Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 4
3. Operation & activation Situation analysis Trained fire fighters and first responders need to evaluate and judge the situation carefully before deciding if the DSPA-5 can be deployed. If a room is properly closed (preventing aerosol loss), the more effective the DSPA-5 will be. Do not use the DSPA-5 when: The room still needs to be used for evacuation purposes. Aerosol significantly reduces the visibility in the room. There is any risk involved for the user while deploying the DSPA-5 There are still people inside the room, who can be saved or evacuated in another way Activation using the DSPA-5 starter To activate the DSPA-5: Bend the far ends of the pins straight, like displayed down below: 3. Starter in safe mode 4. Starter ready for use Pull the pin sideways out of the starter: 5. Before activation 6. After activation Do not pull the pin in another direction out of the starter, this can cause damage to the DSPA-5. Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 5
After the pin is removed from the starter, the device will make a popping sound and at the same time the red cap will jump off the starter. Always aim this part of the device away from yourself. The DSPA-5 is now activated and will start producing aerosol after a delay of 6 to 10 seconds. The DSPA-5 will produce all its aerosol in seconds. Always throw the DSPA-5 directly inside the room without any hesitation! Keep a safe distance considering the temperature build up around the DSPA-5. Close the room immediately after deployment. WARNING Do not keep hold of the DSPA-5 after the pin is removed from the starter of the DSPA-5. After activation the DSPA-5 will temporarily be very hot. Always throw the DSPA-5 in the room immediately after pulling the pin without any hesitation. Cautions and guidelines during operation Never try to stop the activation of the DSPA-5 after the pin is pulled from the starter. Never try to pick up the DSPA-5 after this has been activated. Make sure you have a tight grip of the device and make sure you can deploy the DSPA-5 easily and accurately towards the desired location. It is to be recommended to deploy the DSPA-5 while standing. Never throw the DSPA-5 towards other people. Fire fighters and first responders always need to consider the local regulations and directives of their brigade or department. This manual is not meant to replace or overrule such regulations. People without prior experience in the field of firefighting should only use the DSPA-5 after following a proper training into the use of the DSPA-5. Special notice for fire fighters: certain techniques of (forced) ventilation will decrease the effectiveness of the aerosol. The DSPA-5 is at its best in closed rooms. Make sure there are enough DSPA-5 devices available and that they are easily accessible to trained personnel. This prevents unnecessary delays during an emergency situation. Do not store the DSPA-5 in places where non educated personnel can access the device. We recommend to wear protective clothing and face masks for everybody who comes into contact with fire and aerosol. Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 6
What to do after a deployment? For first responders: Upon arrival, inform fire fighters and other concerned parties about the deployment of the DSPA-5 For fire fighters: Possible hot spots can cause re-ignition once the aerosol is ventilated. Use a thermal imaging camera to identify possible hot spots and extinguish these with a suitable extinguishing agent. 4. Health & safety An independent test institute has conducted a toxicological study of the composition of the solid particles and gases that are released. From this it can be concluded that a normal extinguishing concentration of DSPA-5 aerosol is not hazardous to the health. Warning! The unknown and potentially harmful byproducts of a real fire do pose a health hazard. Although a normal concentration of aerosol particles can be considered as safe for the health, inhalation of the micro sized particles may cause short-term discomfort. Therefore, unnecessary exposure should be avoided. Aerosol significantly reduces the visibility in the room. Do not use a DSPA-5 in a room that still needs to be used for evacuation. The evacuation of the user and other people in the building should have the highest priority when making the decision to deploy the DSPA-5. Be aware that the temperature around the DSPA-5 increases during activation. In a circle of 360 at a distance of 60cm/24inch a temperature can be reached up to 200 C/392 F. Never throw a DSPA-5 in the direction of another person! Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 7
5. Environment DISPOSAL GUIDELINES A used DSPA-5 consists mainly of iron and plaster and can be removed according to standard disposal regulations. Do not throw away unused DSPA-5 s! Empty the DSPA-5 first by discharging it in an open area, away from buildings and traffic. IMPACT ON GLOBAL WARMING The DSPA-5 has no ozone depletion potential and poses no threat to global warming. For more information also see our SNAP-Listing: 6. Installation Make sure the DSPA-5 is securely fixed and is not exposed to impacts, destruction, vandalism, excessive wear and tear, exposure to harmful chemicals or extreme temperatures. Even after installation, storage guidelines with regards to temperature and humidity as described in chapter 8 (storage) should be followed. Choose the location where the DSPA-5 is installed carefully. Make sure that untrained personnel do not have unlimited access to the device. An instruction chart should be prepared together with your DSPA-5 supplier and should be placed next to the DSPA-5. Also make sure that this manual is easily accessible and available to anyone who is supposed to use the DSPA-5. Recommendations: When installing the DSPA-5 to a wall, we recommend to use the DSPA-5 wall bracket or DSPA-5 cabinet. 7. DSPA-5 Wall bracket 8. DSPA-5 Cabinet When the DSPA-5 is installed on a vehicle, we recommend to use a heavy duty suitcase. Revision No. 2.3/2014 Page 8
