Fire Extinguishers Portable Hand and Wheeled At the heart of the Buckeye Fire Equipment product lines are the hand-portable dry chemical fire extinguishers. The performance reliability of these extinguishers is a direct result of the stringent controls under which each component is produced. We mill and blend our own dry chemical agents (monoammonium phosphate based [ABC], potassium bicarbonate based [Purple K], and sodium bicarbonate based [Standard]) on site where each batch is tested and verified to meet our in-house and UL quality requirements. In our machining centers we produce our cylinders and valve component parts to exacting standards that are quality-assured by a manufacturing and inspection system certified to the latest revision of the ISO 9001 Quality Standard. On one of the most modern automated process lines in the world, the extinguishers are filled, pressurized, and leak tested to assure that only the highest quality extinguishers reach our customers. 4 BuckeyeCOMPLETE:Layout 1 5/24/07 4:07 PM Page 4 Portable Extinguisher Selection Guide The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has established the requirements for the number, size, placement, performance, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. These requirements are contained in NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers. Within this Standard it is stated that the selection of fire extinguishers for a given situation is determined by the character of the fires anticipated to be encountered, the construction and occupancy of the property to be protected, the ambient temperature of the area where the extinguisher will be located, and other factors that may dictate the selection of a particular type of extinguisher. CLASSIFICATION Generally, fire extinguishers are selected based on the hazard(s) they are intended to protect. Classifications have been established to categorize what type of extinguishing agent is best suited for the fire hazard. These classifications are A, B, C, D, and K. A fire extinguisher assigned a Class A classification is suitable for use on ordinary combustibles; wood, paper, cloth, rubber, and many of the plastics. The B classification is intended for use on flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, alcohols, and flammable gases. Class C extinguishers are for use on fires involving energized electrical equipment. For fires involving combustible metals (magnesium, lithium, zirconium, etc.), Class D extinguishers are best to use. An extinguisher designated Class K best protects cooking appliances that utilize cooking media such as vegetable oils and animal fats. RATING Along with the classification, the numerical rating of an extinguisher is an important factor in the proper selection of an extinguisher. The rating is a measure of the extinguishing potential of the fire extinguisher and is developed on the basis of comparative fire tests (Reference UL 711, Standard for Rating and Testing of Fire Extinguishers). Only the Class A and Class B classifications carry numerical ratings. Basically, the higher the number associated with the classification letter, the larger the fire the extinguisher has the potential to put out. Please refer to NFPA 10 when determining the rating necessary for the floor area requiring protection. There are no numerical ratings associated with Class C, D, or K classifications. Comparative fire tests are not conducted. In the case of Class C, the electrical nonconducting characteristics of the agent are verified, not the extinguishing potential. For Class D, only the amount of agent and application method needed to control a metal fire of a certain size and type is tested. And for Class K, the fire extinguishing characteristics of the extinguisher have only been determined for a single size fire source. In the typical rating of an extinguisher, for example 3A-40B:C, the 3 and the 40 indicate the extinguishing potential of the unit for a Class A and Class B fire respectively. The C indicates that the extinguishing agent will not conduct electricity, preventing shock to the user if used on energized electrical equipment. On the following page is a reference chart with the basic rating parameters for extinguishers. SUMMARY To provide the best protection of life and property from the destructive force of fire, it is critical that the proper fire extinguisher selection be made. The Classification and Rating of an extinguisher are vital pieces of information for making that selection. Using NFPA 10 for guidance, matching the right fire extinguisher to the potential hazard, providing a sufficient number of extinguishers for the area to be protected, locating the extinguishers for maximum visibility and accessibility, and personnel trained in the use and maintenance of the extinguisher will significantly lessen the risk of loss.

Minimum rating required for low or ordinary hazard areas is 2A. Minimum rating for extra hazard areas is 4A. Maximum floor area that can be protected per unit of A is 3,000 sq. ft. for low hazard. Maximum floor area that can be protected per unit of A is 1,500 sq. ft. for ordinary hazard. Maximum floor area that can be protected per unit of A is 1,000 sq. ft. for extra hazard. To determine the rating necessary for proper protection, divide the total sq. ft. by the unit of A for the hazard. Example: An extinguisher is needed to protect an office area (low hazard) that measures 10,500 sq. ft. Total sq. ft. = 10,500. Unit of A for low hazard is 3,000. The rating necessary to protect the area is 10,500 3,000 = 3.5 units of A. Rounding up to the next numerical rating would mean that a 4A-rated extinguisher would be needed to protect the office. If the area were classified as extra hazard then the extinguisher would need to be rated 20A (10,500 1,000 = 10.5 units of A. Rounded up to the next numerical rating = 20A).

15 BuckeyeCOMPLETE:Layout 1 5/25/07 11:02 AM Page 15 SPECIALTY FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WATER MIST Uses deionized water as the extinguishing agent. The unique misting nozzle creates a fine water spray that improves the cooling and soaking characteristics of the agent and limits the scattering of burning material. This extinguisher is the right choice for Class A fires where there is a potential for Class C (electrical) safety hazards. Ideal for hospitals, clean rooms, and telecom facilities. The non-magnetic properties of the extinguisher make it perfect for use in proximity to MRI equipment. Manufactured to ANSI/UL 8 and ANSI/UL 711 Standards. Model WM250 Part # Agent Capacity 2.5 gallon (9.6 liters) UL Rating 2A:C Discharge Time 73 seconds Operating Pressure 100 psi (689 kpa) Bracket Wall Ship Wt lbs. (13.4 kg) Height 28 inches (71.1 cm) Width (including hose) 14 in (35.6 cm) Cylinder Diameter 7 inches (17.8 cm) Construction Stainless steel cylinder with plated brass valve COMBUSTIBLE METALS CLASS D Specially designed for use on combustible metals fires, this extinguisher features a discharge assembly that keeps the operator at a safe distance while providing accurate application of the agent on the fire. From the heat of the fire, the sodium chloride based agent forms a crust to exclude air from the burning material. Manufactured to Factory Mutual standards. Model 30D Part # Agent Capacity 30 lbs. (13.6 kg) FM Rating D Discharge Time 28 seconds Operating Pressure 195 psi (1344 kpa) Bracket Wall Ship Wt. 55 lbs. 16 BuckeyeCOMPLETE:Layout 1 5/24/07 4:08 PM Page 16 Buckeye Kitchen Mister UL 300 Restaurant Fire Suppression System Protect Your Business With The Best! Discharge Nozzles All five (5) Kitchen Mister nozzles come equipped with a color identification band, red, blue, green, white, and yellow. This allows for easy identification of the nozzle even when it s installed in difficult locations such as a duct or plenum area. The nozzle is also stamped with its Model Number. System Releasing Module Protecting the modern commercial kitchen from the ever present danger of fire is the reason Buckeye Fire Equipment designed the Kitchen Mister Fire System. Utilizing state of the art misting technology, the Kitchen Mister System extinguishes potentially deadly kitchen fires quicker and more effectively than any other kitchen system ever developed, period. The modern commercial kitchen, with its open flames, hot surfaces, and grease laden environment combine all the elements necessary for a fire. Extinguishing fires quickly, before they can spread, is the best way to limit fire damage and get your operation back in business. Don t Take Chances, Demand The Best! Simple is Better The constant changes and complicated requirements of most restaurant cooking systems have made design and installation errors a concern for Fire Equipment Distributors everywhere. Obviously, a simple system design reduces the possibility of design and installation errors. At Buckeye we ve listened to these concerns and understand that simple is better. One look at the Kitchen Mister and you can see what a difference common sense makes: System Cylinders The System Releasing Module has been designed with a viewing window to assure that the actuation cartridge has been properly installed and to see the date written on the cartridge. It also includes high quality ratchets that allow the gas valve to be opened and tested from the SRM. The unit can be mounted directly on a cylinder or can be mounted remotely. It can actuate up to five (5) agent cylinders and does not require a bracket for wall mounting. Buckeye Shielded Cable The Kitchen Mister Shielded Cable Interface is used to connect Buckeye Shielded Cable to any standard 1/2 conduit connection device. The use of Buckeye Shielded Cable (Patent Pending) instead of conduit and corner pulleys for connecting the gas valve, remote pull station, and fusible link line to the Systems Releasing Module reduces installation time by up to 50%. Advanced Automatic Detection The Models BFR-5, BFR-10, BFR-15, and BFR-20 cylinders are designated by flow point capacity (so the BFR- 5 supports five (5) flow points and so on) instead of the amount of agent they hold. Recharge is available in 5 and 10 flow point containers so there s never a chance of error. The Buckeye Kitchen Mister System uses reliable Globe ML style fusible links for automatic detection. However, with the Kitchen Mister System no conduit and only one bracket is required in the entire plenum area. Just bring the cable into the plenum through an approved hood penetration, install a terminal bracket on the far end of the hood, and attach the cable. The links are attached directly to the cable without using conduit or brackets, making them quick to install and easy to move. Fusible Link Holders are also available if a continuous fusible link line is desired.
