4 SPEAKERS Louis-Philippe Phil Gagnon is currently an Alarm Systems Auditor for Underwriters Laboratories (ULC). Prior to joining ULC in 2012, Phil began his career in the industry in 1988, working for various companies such as Simplex Time Equipment, Wells Fargo, ADT, SimplexGrinnell and Total Fire Protection. He studied Computer Science & Electronics at Outaouais College of Gatineau. He is a CFAA Registered Fire Alarm Technician for the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Al Bastien is a leader in the field of life safety education. Having started in the fire alarm industry over twenty years ago as a technician, he continued to expand his skills and knowledge in the industry taking on roles in the sales of preventative maintenance and service agreements, large systems sales, project management, senior technician, technical support, service branch management and life safety consulting. Throughout that time, he continued to be hands on in the field as a Canadian Fire Alarm Association Registered Technician and senior technical support role, ensuring he kept up to date on the industry and technology being used. He has been an active member of the Canadian Fire Alarm Association as both a Director at Large of the Ontario Chapter and serving on the National Education Committee. He has instructed the CFAA Fire Alarm Technician Program at St. Clair College of Applied Technology in the Continuing Education and continues to be a consult in the field. His main focus however is on the development and delivery of training seminars for the Canadian Fire Alarm Association. Traveling across Canada he instructs Fire Prevention Officers, Building Officials, Fire Fighters, Technicians and Building Owners on various aspects of life safety, life safety systems, applicable codes and standards and gives guidance on how to improve the life safety standards and lives of those they are responsible for. Drawing on his years of experience in the field, he is able to give insight to the inner workings of the industry and provide answers and solutions to concerns of those attending these interactive learning sessions.

5 Frank Faroni is currently the Manager of Fire Safety & Emergency Management at Western University. Western has over 9 million square feet spread over 80 buildings with a campus population of over 40,000. Frank s responsibilities include the oversight of the test / inspect and repair of fire safety systems, meeting the requirements of the Ontario Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Emergency Management Act and other related legislation. Frank Faroni is a licensed electrician; CFAA registered technician; NFPA 1031 Fire Prevention Inspector; has taught night school at the college and private level; has a certificate in public sector management and maintains a Professional Manager designation. Gary Laframboise has over 20 years of experience in the fire protection field and is currently the Chief Fire Prevention Officer with the Oakville Fire Department. Prior to joining the Oakville Fire Department in 1996 he was a Certified Fire Alarm Technician with a fire protection company and was involved with fire alarm, sprinkler and special extinguishing systems. He is a graduate of the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program from Seneca College. He is also an Associate Instructor with the Ontario Fire College and an Executive Member with the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association. John MacDonald is the CFAA Ontario Chapter President and the National Education Committee Chair, he owns his own business and is a CFAA registered fire alarm technician. John s background includes production electronics, electrical/mechanical training and computer software and development. Alan Cavers is the Engineering Manager for the Fire & Security Systems Group of Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). He has been with ULC for 33 years in various capacities with the past 20 years in the fire alarm and burglary protection area. The Fire and Security Systems Group are the main resource for AHJ, Police Dept., Fire Dept., and Insurance Companies to source out and provide interpretations for field problems. Alan is an active member of the Standing Committee on Use and Egress for the NBCC & NFCC for the next release of the NBC & NFC for He is a CFAA Registered Technician and a CFAA Director.

6 John Percy is currently the public education officer with Waterloo Fire Rescue. Mr. Percy has over 15 years of experience in the fire service and fire alarm system industries. As a certified public fire and life safety educator and fire prevention officer he provides presentations to all age categories in the city. In addition he is the public information officer in respect to media relations and performs Ontario Fire Code inspections. Mike Hugh is a Senior Field Sales Engineer at SimplexGrinnell in Mississauga, Ontario. During his 25+ years of experience in the fire alarm industry, Michael served as a Fire Alarm Technician, Technical Support Specialist, Technical Trainer and Product Manager. He holds an Electronic Engineering Technician diploma from Seneca College and currently serves on the CFAA National Executive Board as well as on multiple ULC Standards sub-committees. ** Please note the CFAA Ontario Chapter will be holding the Annual Ontario Chapter Elections immediately following the Symposium.
