1 CENTRAL DAUPHIN SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Life Safety/Security (LSS) Technician Department: Buildings and Grounds FLSA: Non-exempt Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor SUMMARY Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or his designee, the Life Safety/Security Technician, (LSS) works to establish a safe environment for students and staff at every level in the school district. This Technician is responsible for developing, implementing, installing, repairing, and monitoring the school districts various life safety, burglar, and security systems under the Board approved policies and guidelines, for the purpose of providing a safe and secure environment. They will administer District-wide access control and building key coordinator programs and assure that proper procedures are being followed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Service, inspect, and test systems to the prescribed standards. Perform on-site emergency troubleshooting, programming, and repair of our fire alarm, burglar alarm, access control and video surveillance systems. Identify code and non-conformance issues, and prepare accurate and timely work orders and reports. Design, install and inspect fire, burglar, access control, and video surveillance systems to NFPA, OSHA and various local code standards. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications, software/systems, programs, schematics and operation/product manuals. Develop and maintain power and back-up systems for all current systems including fire, intercom/bell, burglary, access and surveillance, as well as on-going programming and changes. Assist the Safety and Security Department with the management of badges and access for employees. Research and recommend changes and modifications to existing systems. Keep As Built drawings and schematics up to date and secure. Plan, layout, install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
2 Test continuity of circuits to assure electrical compatibility and safety of components. Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and the national electrical code. Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender. Pull wiring through conduit. Splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and terminal caps. Connect power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and install grounding leads. Purchase replacement units and parts when necessary, following district guidelines for bidding. Coordinate and supervise subcontractors hired by the school district. Purchase of products necessary to complete tasks with approval from Supervisor. Troubleshoot and repair theatrical lighting control and audio systems. Snow removal as required. Perform other responsibilities within job classification as assigned by Supervisor. MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Establish and maintain open lines of communication with staff, public and outside vendors. Ability to read journals, manuals, etc.; to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in electrical drawing and layout work. Ability to document actions taken and results achieved for work accomplished. Ability to record and deliver information; to explain procedures to others; to follow verbal and written work orders. Making judgments and decisions, involving solving problems, making evaluations, or reaching conclusions. Ability to cut rough objects to desired shape; to read measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers. Ability to perceive identification numbers marked on material; to read and understand numbers and volumes. Ability to use hand tools and instruments.
3 Involves frequent changing of tasks involving different aptitudes, technologies, procedures, working conditions, physical demands, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure. Attaining precise set limits, tolerances and standards: Involves adhering to and achieving exact levels of performance, using precision measuring instruments, tools and machines to attain precise dimensions; preparing exact verbal and numerical records; and complying with precise instruments and specifications for materials, methods, procedures, and techniques to attain specified standards. Making judgments and decisions, involving solving problems, making evaluations, or reaching conclusions. Will be required to read and understand diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals and schematic diagrams. Responsible for ordering parts, supplies and equipment from industrial catalogs and suppliers. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute ratio and proportion, and percentage; to calculate surfaces, volume, weights, and measures. Ability to interpret setting requirements; adjusts work schedules or staffing to meet necessary District requirements using knowledge of capacity of machines and equipment. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: 2-year Associate s Degree in a technical field, such as electronics, electrical or equivalent desired. Diploma graduate of appropriate trade school or technical college in electrical engineering with additional courses in electronics and computers is acceptable. Five years experience as a technician/inspector for a Burglar/Fire Alarm/Engineered Systems Distributor including installation and maintenance of addressable Fire Alarm Systems is desirable. (Some experience may be waived by appropriate schooling along with demonstrated proficiency in completed courses.) Maintain current knowledge of National Electrical Codes. Possess or be willing to obtain appropriate licenses required by National, State and Local codes. Experience in Nurse Call, School Paging, Access Control, Burglar Alarm Systems and/or CCTV a plus. Requirements: Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver s License. Will be required to work a flexible work schedule including nights and weekends and be on-call in a rotation with other maintenance personnel. Will be required to provide standard hand tools to complete work within job classification. Must have a working knowledge of test equipment to include: multi-meters, digital analyzers, sensitivity meters and other communicating and testing devices. Must have proficient computer skills and the ability to handle
4 various software packages and perform programming and upgrades on fire alarm panels, door controllers, security systems, etc. Abilities: Ability to use tools ranging from common hand and power tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills and wrenches to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices. Ability to examine and evaluate data. Presenting alternative actions in relation to the evaluation is frequently involved. Ability to understand relatively complex principals and techniques of electrical trades. Must be able to acquire knowledge of topics related to work classification. Must present a professional demeanor that follows the District Code of Ethics. Physical Abilities: Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and move and lift heavy objects. Term of Employment: 12-month position
