DC Olson attended the City of Auburn Blue Ribbon Commission meeting on Tuesday, August 7 th at Auburn City Hall. AFM Rogers attended the Regional Fire Investigators meeting on Tuesday, August 7 th at South King Fire & Rescue. Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, August 7 th, at Headquarters Station 31. IT Manager Smith attended the Valley Communications Center (VCC) Technology Users Group meeting on Wednesday, August 8 th at VCC. EM Coordinator Yancey attended the Zone 3 Emergency Management meeting on Wednesday, August 8 th in Tukwila. Command Staff held their monthly meeting on Thursday, August 9 th, at Headquarters Station 31. DC Olson & Captain Kuzaro attended the King County EMS Levy BLS subcommittee meeting on Thursday, August 9 th in Renton. Fiscal Coordinator Boyle attended the GP Users Group training session on Friday, August 10 th in Tacoma. 1

2 VRFA personnel participated in the annual AuburnFest and Auburn Days parade on Saturday, August 11 th. This Week: Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, August 14 th, at Headquarters Station 31. The Civil Service Commission will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 14 th at Auburn City Hall. The Finance Committee and Board of Governance will hold their monthly meetings on Tuesday, August 14 th at Headquarters Station 31. Administrator Robertson will attend the South King County Leadership Forum, sponsored by King County Councilmember Peter von Reichbauer, on Wednesday, August 15 th in Auburn. The VRFA & Local 1352 Negotiations Teams will meet on Wednesday, August 15 th and Thursday, August 16 th to further the work on the Battalion Chiefs and Fire Marshal Collective Bargaining Agreement to begin January 1, VRFA staff will attend the City of Auburn Community Picnic on Thursday, August 16 th at Les Gove Park. DC Olson will attend the Summer Cruise-In at Les Gove Park on Thursday, August 16 th with the VRFA s 1938 antique Pirsch engine. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Brush Fire: (Lea Hill) On Monday, August 6 th at 4:30 p.m., firefighters from the VRFA and several local agencies made quick work of a 1 acre brush fire behind the baseball fields, in heavy brush and some large trees, at Rainier Middle School. Several homes were threatened, but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before any were damaged. Motor Vehicle Accident: (South Auburn) On Tuesday, August 7 th at 4:25 p.m., firefighters responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident. Firefighters arrived on location and found an adult male who had been struck by a vehicle. He had minor injuries to his arm. Firefighters bandaged his arm. The patient declined being transported to the hospital. All parties involved were left at the scene with Auburn Police. 2

3 Aid Call: (Auburn) On Wednesday, August 8 th at 9:33 a.m., firefighters responded to a teenage male patient that was bitten in the face by a dog. The patient was evaluated at the scene by firefighters and then transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) for further treatment. Fire/CPR: (Algona) On Thursday, August 9 th at 5:45 p.m., VRFA and South King Fire & Rescue firefighters, Algona Police and King County Medic units responded to a house fire with a collapsed adult male in the back yard. Upon arrival firefighters found Algona police performing CPR. VRFA firefighters continued CPR efforts while additional fire units extinguished the fire. King County Medics arrived and took over resuscitation efforts. The patient was transported to MAMC by King County Medics for further care. The fire cause is under investigation. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Friday, August 10 th at 7:19 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male patient that was having a diabetic issue. Firefighters found the patient unconscious on the floor. The patient was treated by VRFA firefighters and King County Medics and transported to MAMC by King County Medics. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Saturday, August 11 th at 9:54 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult female with her arm trapped in a cabinet. The cabinet was partially disassembled and the patient was freed with no injury. Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, August 12 th at 12:52 p.m., firefighters responded to an elderly male patient who had fallen and injured himself. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and then transported to Tacoma General Hospital via private automobile. Training Division Activities: Year Weekly Year to Date 16,862 18,879 Apprentice Training: VRFA apprentices who are currently enrolled in the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) began preparing for their upcoming step exams. These exams have both written and practical exam elements. They are designed to evaluate the apprentice s progress in becoming a journeyman firefighter. The apprentice should coordinate practicing and preparing for the exam with his/her crew and company officer. A VRFA JATC committee member in conjunction with the training division proctors the exam. Quarterly Training Objectives: This was a catch-up week where VRFA crews were able to catch up on on-line training requirements. Many of these assigned 3

4 training topics are required by governmental agencies and keep our organization compliant. The topics include: EMS training, HIPAA Compliance, Heat Related Emergencies, Asbestos Awareness, Operations Level HazMat, and Dealing with Electrical Hazards. Fire Marshal s Office Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections: Total Annual Fire & Life Safety Inspections completed this week: 17 Inspections completed by Certified Fire Inspectors this week: 12 Inspections completed by Company Level staff this week: 4 New Business Licenses entered into the system: 1 Pre-Application Meetings: Pre-Application meetings completed this week: 1 Construction Inspections: Construction Inspections completed this week: 10 Land Use & Plan Reviews: Land Use Plan Reviews completed this week: 3 Plan Reviews completed this week: 6 Fire Investigations: On Monday, August 6 th, an accidental wildland fire occurred in the block of 116 th Avenue SE in Auburn. The fire involved ground cover and trees in a heavily wooded area. The fire was quickly contained and involved no structures. Dollar loss was estimated at $0. On Wednesday, August 8 th, an incendiary passenger vehicle fire occurred in the 600 block of 7 th St. SE in Auburn. Fire did not involve anything beyond the vehicle. The fire remains under joint investigation with Auburn Police. Dollar loss is estimated at $10,000. On Thursday, August 9 th, a fire occurred in the 300 block of Broadway in Algona. The fire began on the exterior of a 2 story single family residence. It was quickly extinguished with little interior structural damage. CPR was performed at the scene for a medical incident related to the fire. Dollar loss and cause has not yet been determined. 4

5 Training: FMO Staff attended BATS Database Training given by Special Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Public Education PIEOs Terhune and Hawks participated in the 2019 Budget Presentation. PIEO staff assisted an expectant mom with the installation of an infant car seat. Coordination continued for the last of the summer events. Station 32 crews installed smoke alarms for a senior resident in South Auburn. Two smoke alarms were also provided for a North Auburn resident. Smoke alarms are provided through grants from the Auburn Area Fire Medic Campaign and World Vision/Costco. PIO duties were performed for a brush fire, story on wildland firefighter deployment and a residential fire in Algona. Posts were made to social media sites regarding a brush fire, a 25 years of service presentation and the wildland fire deployments. Planning and Logistics P&L received 4 apparatus and 5 facility/small tool maintenance requests. DC Olson and BC Larberg met with Puget Sound Fire Authority to discuss the maintenance contract for our interlocal agreement for fire apparatus service. Semi-annual inspection, cleaning and repairs of PPE (bunker gear) is being conducted. Plumbing repairs were made at Station 34 and 35. HVAC repairs were made at Station 38. 5
