1 Understanding Planting Tables Instructor: Terri Cummings Date: June 25, 2012 Course Title: Plants in Your Life Specific Topic: Reading a planting tables.. Using 3 2 1, Cornell Notes Reading Assignment: From Introductory Horticulture Section 3, Unit 6, page 70 Ball Redbook Understanding the Text Fall Planting Table using the Ball Redbook Performance Objectives: Standards: After completion of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Explain the items that should be in a planting table 2. Explain how to use the Ball Redbook 3. Complete a planting table Reading Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 2. Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text, trace the text s explanation or depiction or a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text. 7. Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form, and translate information expressed visually or mathematically into words. CTEK Assessment The completed Planting Table. Materials: Worksheet Reading the planting table Worksheet How to use the Ball Redbook Planting Table Ball Redbook
2 Procedure: Entire Class: Introduction and Method of activating prior knowledge Reflect back on the previous lesson reading Questions/Discussion: How do we know when to plant? Do all plants grow during the same time of year? When you go into the store, what do you notice about all the plants? Individual: 1. Pass out handout of planting table. Have students complete the assignment individually. Entire Class: Come back together. At this time we would go over the planting table with different students sharing their answers. Group: 1. At your tables there is a book Ball Redbook. 2. Give the students 5 minutes to look at the book. 3. Pass out Cornell notes on Ball Redbook everyone complete Entire Class: 1. Go through the book looking at what type of information is in the book and where they would find the information for the planting table. Application of Material: Will be creating a planting table for the seeds we use in class. Extension Questions: Accommodations needed: 1. What is the purpose of all this information? 2. How can I get all my plants to be blooming at the same time Students on IEP s etc, will have fewer plants to look up.
