5 Student Organic Farm The Michigan State University Student Organic Farm (SOF) is a 10-acre, four-season teaching farm with the mission to cultivate knowledge and human capacity in organic and sustainable agriculture for students, farmers and educators. SOF is committed to: Providing experiential educational programming for undergraduates Offering outreach in the use of season extension and organic methods for farmers and educators Conducting research on season extension and organic production methods Expanding partnerships to develop an international network of organic teaching farms Working with Michigan s urban centers to develop the infrastructure for increased access to healthy food and cultivating economic vitality and social equity With a variety of funding sources, the SOF team has spent the last eight years developing hoophouse production and education methods for extending the growing season and increasing winter vegetable production in the Midwest. SOF uses a unique 48-week-long community-supported agriculture program and a campus farm stand to provide students with real-world marketing experience and to fund the operation of the farm. In addition, an unheated passive solar greenhouse, or hoophouse, is dedicated to the production and sale of produce to MSU s Division of Residential and Hospitality Services for on-campus residential dining services and to cultivate connections between MSU and local farmers.
