1 B October 2016 Volume 45 Number 10 illboard Newsletter of The Bonsai Society of Upstate New York Inc Broadleaf Evergreens Owen Reich his month we will have Owen Reich present a program on Broadleaf T Evergreens at our meeting on Tuesday, October 25th at 7 pm. From an early age, Owen Reich has been enchanted by the natural world around where he lived in southeastern US. While studying at the University of Georgia, a classmate introduced Owen to bonsai and the dream of having a bonsai nursery of his own began. After graduating, Owen worked at Samara Farms in Nashville, TN as the manager for the next 5 years. While there he refined his understanding of horticulture. Owen also studied under Keiichi Fujikawa, the owner of Kouka-en Nursery and gained experience with a wide variety of species. Studying bonsai in Japan has been a stepping stone to create bonsai using not only Asian species, but also to apply techniques and design principles to our American trees. Broadleaf evergreens and Deciduous trees have always held the most interest for him when it comes to bonsai, especially maples, fruit trees, and flowering species. Owen says that This area of bonsai is where I hope to have the greatest impact by sharing techniques for their creation and maintenance. He refers to his teaching style as laid back and practical, and says that the most important thing about bonsai is that this stuff should be fun!. Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 25, 7:00 pm Broadleaf Evergreens Owen Reich Brighton Town Lodge at Buckland Park 1341 Westfall Road, Rochester, New York near corner of Westfall and Clinton Be sure to attend. 2 2 September Highlights he September meeting featured a demonstration by master T bonsai artist Minoru Akiyama from Japan. It was well attended by 65 members and guests. Mr. Akiyama styled a Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper that originally came from Bill Valavanis front garden. He started with aggressive pruning to refine the foliage. This allowed him to see the branch structure and decide on the tree design. After that he wired and positioned the main branches. Mr. Akiyama with the help of his translator, Peter Warren produced a well-designed Literati cascade style bonsai after much pruning and some jin work. The presentation gave everyone from beginner to advanced bonsai fancier great insight on what to look for in good cascade bonsai. We all can use new ideas for our own trees. Members appreciated the bushel of Gala apples Bruce Kirby provided. Our thanks go to Mr. Akiyama for sharing his information and techniques with us! The Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper bonsai that Mr. Akiyama created was raffled off and won by Ron Maggio. Hope we ll see it in the future at a meeting or Spring show. Joe Moore won one of three pots donated by Bill Muldowney from New Jersey. Two other pots were won by Joe Lentner and Jerome Cushman The Society appreciates everyone who purchased tickets for the raffle.
3 Upstate New York Suiseki Study Group In collaboration with Les Allen his month the Suiseki Study Group will feature Taki-Ishi or Waterfall Stones. Taki-Ishi T (Waterfall stones) are those stones that resemble mountains with one or more waterfalls. The waterfalls are suggested by streak of white mineral at top of stone, coming down front. There are many varieties of Taki-Ishi like many different waterfalls are in nature: Thread-waterfall stones (Itodaki-ishi) Suggested by a thin line of quartz-like material running down the front of the stone. Sheet-waterfall stones (Nudodaki-ishi) Broader lines of light-colored material coming down the front side of the stone. Dry waterfall stones (Karedaki-ishi) Definite markings that suggest a dried waterfall. Mountain waterfall stones (Yamagata-taki-ishi) Mountain stones with one or more waterfalls appearing on their front surfaces. Mountain-stream stones (Keiryu-seki) Stream running through valley, often white mineral vein where the stream would be. Ideal if stream runs diagonally, vs. from front to back. Source: Suiseki.com - The Art of Stone Appreciation by Vincent T. Covello & Yuji Yoshimura 3 A B C Les Allen, long time member of the Bonsai Society of Upstate New York and avid Suiseki collector for more than 20 years, is sharing with us three of his favorite waterfall stones: The first stone (A) its a Waterfall stone that will be exhibited later this month at the Golden State Bonsai Convention in Sacramento. The stone was collected years ago with Felix Rivera during forest fires at the Salmon River. The second (B), a Ligurian waterfall stone, was the grand prize winner at the recent AIAS convention held in Bodeno Italy. Tom Elias was the judge. The third stone (C) its a Mountain Stream Stone that was exhibited at the recent 5th US National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester. It was on loan from the National Arboretum. This Mountain Stream Stone comes from the Kibune river, Kamogawa tributary, north of Kyoto (Kibnue keiryu-seki). This is a very famous stone in Japan. It incorporates several excellent features such as the high peak, large plateau and well formed dimensions from front to back. The dark color gives it a sense of timelessness. An additional feature is the white stone which is located in such an ideal position that one can almost hear the roar from the rugged, rocky river. It has appeared in Japanese monthly publications devoted to viewing stones and was exhibited at the bonsai and suiseki exhibition during EXPO '70. Donor was Mr. Kunizo Motoki. Below more Waterfall Stones from several Internet sites Special Bonsai Auction Long time bonsai hobbyist, Dr. Louis Albright from Ithaca, NY, donated all of his bonsai and supplies to our society. The 15 bonsai will be auctioned on Saturday, October 29th at 1 pm at the International Bonsai Arboretum, 1070 Martin Road, West Henrietta, NY. There are pines, Japanese maples, Japanese yews and junipers. The containers, wire, soil and turntables will be for sale at that time. Any items remaining will be sold at our spring bonsai exhibition next May. Proceeds will benefit the Society. Call if you have questions. See attached flyer for more information.
4 4 It s That Time of the Year Again... ll your indoor species should be protected in the A home. Do not be surprised if some of the leaves turn yellow and drop, it is natural to lose some foliage due to the reduced light. Plants tend to dry out a lot quicker indoors than they did outside for a while, then they will adapt to the dry conditions indoors. It is much too early to put your hardy outdoor specimens away for the winter. Wait until we have had a few good hard frosts, at least the end of November or early December. While you are waiting, now is the time to remove all the old needles on pines. Do not put them away for winter with old dead needles because they might harbor pests or diseases. Also, removing the old needles will provide good sun and air to the inner sections of the tree that will stimulate new buds from the old wood. After you remove the old dead needles, remove some of the new needles leaving a few clusters around the tips of each bud. New buds will grow more vigorously if you remove these needles. If the moss is lush, green and thick around your bonsai, you might want to remove some of it before winter to allow better air circulation to the roots and to prevent fungus from growing in the thick moss. Enjoy your bonsai during their bright autumnal colorfest. Remember, it will not last long because it s that time of year again...w.n.v. Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper he Dwarf Japanese Juniper Bonsai tree is suitable for those who are still T a beginner starting in the world of bonsai. Grown primarily for being used in a small bonsai pot, the Dwarf Japanese Juniper has turned out to be one of the most popular bonsai in America. Although there are more than 60 varieties of the Juniper bonsai, its features such as fine needles and exfoliating bark make it the perfect choice. Makes a fine bonsai if it is properly trained and cared for. Plant Description: This juniper has a low, spreading habit that makes it ideal for cascade and semi-cascade styles. Specimens grown in a nursery or specifically for bonsai can be used for many styles, but probably not for formal upright. In nature it grows as a small ground-cover shrub. The new foliage is bright green turning to bluish green as it matures. Winter color has a purple tint. Lighting: Full sun. Temperature: Tolerates a wide range of temperatures, including freezing, however, roots must be protected from excessive heat or cold. Pruning and wiring: To develop the foliage, pinch out the tender new shoots using your fingers. Do not use scissors, as the cut needles will turn brown. Pinching must be done continuously during the growing season. Prune undesirable branches (especially those growing straight down from their parent branch) when repotting or during the growing season. Wiring is best done in autumn or early winter, so that the branches can become accustomed to their new position while the tree is dormant. Pests and diseases: Junipers are a favorite victim of red spider mites. If the tree appears weak, with yellowing foliage, it may have spider mites. To check for spider mites, hold a sheet of white paper under a branch and gently shake the foliage. If the paper comes away with many small dots that move, it has spider mites. To combat spider mites, spray with insecticidal soap or a nicotine solution (which can be made by soaking tobacco in water overnight). The graceful canopy and impressive bark are good reasons why everyone should have at least one Juniper in their bonsai collection. Try one soon.
