The Collector s Catalog Every few years, Disney has a policy of re-releasing some of their best films- the classics... Terra Nova has some classics too! In this, our first collector s catalog, we are not only rereleasing some of our best, most asked-for classics, but also some of our rarest varieties in limited quantities only. Terra Nova does not throw away our older varieties; we restart them, keep them fresh, and grow them in stock-blocks in our field. Here we can see that the plants are still vigorous and carry the same characteristics as the original plants. We are delighted to offer our customers some plants that are hot off the griddle, like Geum Eos and Begonia Silver Splendor, as well as garden-worthy plants from the recent past. Order soon, as some plants have limited quantities and short windows for these rare opportunities. As we venture in this new direction with our collector catalog we ll continue to add to the assortment. What you see in this brochure is just the tip of the iceberg! Visit for expanded cultural information, and for a complete list of our collector plants. 5 PP14847 EU16251 Brugmansia Snowbank Here s our Angel s Trumpet introduction with fragrant, peach colored blooms of immense proportions. Z 8-13 W 60/36-48/60 WOW! Just got to get one of these. PPAF PVR Campanula x pulloides Jelly Bells Decidedly delicious with large, deep blue-violet, nodding bells perched a top a bright green mat of foliage. It can be used in a small container or in a rock garden (where it will rebloom). Jelly Bells makes a vigorous and attractive low growing perennial, returning year after year. It prefers full sun and needs good drainage. Z 5-8 Å 3-8/14-18/6-11 Small container. Carex siderosticha Lemon Zest PP14463 The only gold C. siderosticha on the market that holds its gold all summer. Its bright lemon swords will illuminate the garden. These golden clumps glow in moderate shade with even moisture. Striking in borders and containers. This clumping, deciduous sedge combines well with Hosta and Heuchera. Z 6-9 9/12/18 Ensete Tandarra Red Can you say, BOLD? This is one dramatic foliage plant with huge, waxy fronds of reddish-purple tones superimposed over deep green Similar to Ensete Maurellii, but with more contrasting leaf and vein color. Use this bold banana for an exotic, tropical look. Z /80/110 4
Fatsia japonica Spider s Web A fantasy of brilliant white splashing and dotting. A beautiful Aralia given to Dan by variegated plant guru (sensei #1), Dr. Yokoi in Japan. This variable form is very rare - (even over there!) Wild variegation changes with the seasons and as the plant ages. Named by Dan s other sensei, Mr. Hirose of Iwakuni, Japan. Z /48/65 Geum coccineum Eos (Van Noort) One peek and you will see why this glowing plant was named after the goddess of the dawn. Bright orange flowers punctuate this golden statement. The compact habit makes this plant a natural for sunny containers and for the front of the border in the garden. Easy and carefree. Z 5-8 6/10-12/11 Hedychium Tahitian Flame PP19921 Make a Hawaiian splash with this boldly variegated hybrid ginger. Intoxicatingly fragrant apricot flowers emerge in midsummer and continue thru fall. The upright habit of Tahitian Flame creates a wonderful architectural accent for both containers and gardens. Z 4-9 W - 60/24/68 Very fragrant. Get one for patio planter. Helleborus x nigercors Honeyhill Joy (Metcalfe) This hybrid from Honeyhill Farms is exceptional for its quantities of large, outfacing, cream-centered, white flowers over vigorous, shiny, blue tinged foliage. Plant Honeyhill Joy at your entry to enjoy the exceptionally early 2-month long show of marvelous, late winter blooms. Foliage is exceptionally weather-resistant. Blooms early (after its first winter) in a 4 pot! Z Å J 18/24/28 What a show for winter. 5
Helleborus x sternii Hot Flash Sumptuously silvered and red veined, this outstanding evergreen Hellebore sports deeply serrate edges to create one HOT leaf. Blooms in late winter to early spring with pale green flowers blushed with pink. Wonderful in the front of the border for its clean good looks and winter interest. Requires good drainage to thrive. Z Å J 12/18/16 Cool leaves. Heuchera Amethyst Myst A cool fog of silver settles over the stunning amethyst foliage. This glossy-leafed, heat and humidity tolerant, vigorous clump can achieve an impressive 24 across. Both size and color make this Heuchera stand out in the spring garden. The more you grow this plant - the more you admire it. Americana breeding gives heat and humidity tolreance. Z 4-9 y J f 10/15-24/26 Sister to Plum Pudding. PP18922 EU25268 Heuchera Café Olé Frilly, ruffled leaves in milk chocolate form a tight mound on this unusual hybrid. Numerous branched spikes hold hundreds of white flowers kissed with purple. Create a cute border display with our best multi-crowned compact Heuchera! Great for edging a pathway or en masse. Z 4-9 y - J f 6-12/16/21 Cute! Heuchera Plum Pudding EU3330 Thriving in the heat and humidity of the South, this industry staple is still one of our finest plums. Tight, compact habit with beyond burgundy shiny foliage make this an excellent companion planting for a wide array of colors. Z 4-9 y J f 8/16/26 6
Heuchera Velvet Night Our darkest veiled form. 7 plush, slate black leaves, with complex metallic purple overlays. Great with gold Hosta. It has shimmering leaves that are actually velvety to the touch. These show best in partial shade. Americana breeding gives heat and humidity tolreance. Z 4-9 7/17/26 PP14825 EU20554 x Heucherella Sunspot Feast your eyes on this brilliant form of Dayglow Pink with electric yellow foliage and wine-red center patches. Blooms heavily with dozens of flamingo pink flowers adding to any spring color display. Foliage color softens to a pleasant buff for summer long interest. Z f 5/12/16 All Heucherella are heat and humidity tolerant. Ligularia dentata Britt-Marie Crawford PP16113 EU12794 (Crawford) Giant 12 leaves of glossy black create mirrors in the garden. This darkest Ligularia to date exhibits extreme vigor providing a dramatic backdrop for infinite color combinations. Daisy-like flowers of golden orange emerge in late summer. Create a tropical mood with this hardy must have perennial. Z Å 16-36/16-36/45-60 Big n black. Lobelia Grape Knee-Hi PP13264 By backcrossing to an extremely dwarf form of the very hardy native Lobelia siphilitica, we ve come up with a true dwarf cardinal flower with deep, purple flowers. Not only is this plant dwarf, it s also sterile. This prolongs the bloom time. Z 4-9 y W - Å 22/15/25 7
Petasites frigidus var. palmatus Golden Palms (Pavlich) A wild sport collected at 1500 in the Northwest by Chuck Pavlich. Shimmering metallic golden palms, which can grow to almost 3 feet wide arise in early spring preceded by cream colored male flower spikes from February to April. Thrives in moist conditions. Requires shade in southern climes and needs sun elsewhere for best color. This is a spreader. Offered as bare root only. Z 6-10 Å 12/36+/15 Northwest native. Philodendron Pink Princess An unusual black leaf Philodendron with hot pink variegation! We believe this wonderful foliage plant is an Australian hybrid. Good light is needed for the maximum variegation and pink shades. No special care is needed, except for moderate light and home conditions. Z i 48+/25/6-48+ Get this for mom. PP17361 EU24276 Podophyllum Spotty Dotty This brilliant hybrid of several Asian Mayapples boasts large, VIGOROUS, lobed umbrella shaped leaves. Leaves are chartreuse with dramatic chocolate-brown spotting throughout the spring. Like nothing you ve ever seen! In summer, the leaves are green with lightly spotted areas. Huge garnet-hued flowers are found under the leaves in clusters of 5 or more. This form was selected for its coloring, frost tolerance, vigor, and rhizomatous habit. All Podophyllum prefer shade and moist cool, well composted soil. Avoid drought stress. Protect from hard frosts in spring. Loves organic fertilizer or compost tea. Z /24+/17 To die for... do not let dry out. Polystichum sp. Shiny Holly (syn. Spiny Holly ) (Jones) This recently collected evergreen fern has wonderful, clean, shiny foliage, and a plastic-like texture. Deep green foliage year round looks great in the fall, winter and in spring with early bulbs. The emerging fronds are also a sight, with huge coppery scales. From Judith Jones at Fancy Fronds. Easy to grow and use in the woodland garden or containers for long lasting beauty. Z /12-18/NA Plastic! 8
Primula Green Lace Large clusters of yellow eyed, green frilled flowers that last for months on the plant. We ve brought this back because we can t believe how often and how long it blooms in the garden. You ask for the unusual hardy plants? You got em! The neat foliage is good in containers. Sandra Tuffin, who bred it, sent us this beauty years ago. Similar to Francisca ( Francesca ), but is longer blooming with a better habit and more profuse blooms. Z /3/9 Blooms from March to August in Oregon. Pulmonaria Cotton Cool This long-blooming English introduction sports attractive upright leaves that are entirely silvered. We looked at Majeste and Cotton Cool in our trials and of the two, Cotton Cool never mildewed. Nice clusters of small blue flowers appear in April. A cool addition to shady areas but will take morning sun. Z 4-9 y Å 12/19/14 Pulmonaria longifolia ssp. cevennensis This superb landscape Pulmonaria has the best of both worlds. Long, silver, spearshaped 26 leaves are highly mildew resistant and provide the perfect backdrop for an EXTENDED floral show. Large, midnight-blue flowers are wider than the typical longifolia species. The PPA gave this subspecies from the Cevennes (a region in France), the highest mildew resistance rating in their trials. Very vigorous. Z 4-9 y Å 18/24/12 Pulmonaria Milky Way This plant offers the stellar combination of lance-shaped, heavily spotted leaves and pink-wine blooms that fade to blue. Strong spotted leaves are of mildew resistant P. Margery Fish heritage. Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery feels it s the best form for the south. Z 4-9 y Å 12/15/15 9
PP11234 EU9811 Pulmonaria Victorian Brooch One of the longest blooming of all Pulmonaria with masses of outfacing magentacoral flowers that pop against the attractive, long, silver-spotted foliage. Victorian Brooch bloomed for over 10 weeks in our Oregon garden. Mildew resistant. Z 4-9 y Å 12/20/8 (HWJK 2401) NEW Roscoea purpurea Cinnamon Stick Plucked from the Himalayas, this zone 6 ginger relative is a stunner in a pot or in a shady woodland garden. Blood red stems ascend with bronzed leaves and the large, orchid-like lavender flowers emerge over a long period in late summer. While not recommended for the hot and humid south, it makes a superb addition to any garden. Z /20/20 Need to try this! PP17406 EU20562 Sedum Cloud Walker Cloud Walker beautifully combines large mauve blooms and dark tinted blue foliage. A Sedum spectabile hybrid with vase shaped, open branching habit that creates a new look in a flowering, hybrid Sedum. The 6-8 airy flower clusters are layered in cloud-like pattern. Z 4-9 J 15/16-24/17 Silene dioica Valley High PP16064 Strongly contrasting variegation with a large green center surrounded by cream to white margins. Profuse rose pink flowers in May and it will rebloom in the fall if it is cut back. Back by popular demand. A great garden performer. Needs good drainage and minimal fertilization. Z 4-9 W 10/8/13 10
NEW Thalictrum ichangense Evening Star strain A lovely woodland and shade container perennial with foliage like an Epimedium. Leaflets colored olive, tan, and copper to red-brown are held on wiry stems; each with a central silver star. Tufts of lavender flowers float over the foliage spring through summer. An exciting new perennial for some enchanted evening. Z 7-9, possibly to Z 5 8/12/14 Really cool. PP12396 EU9848 Tiarella Iron Butterfly Large, fragrant flowers sit atop, striking, contrasting, cut foliage. This is one of the most widely distributed Tiarella in the world. Dan saw this blooming in Chicago in mid-october! Z 4-9 W - Å 8/11/16 Ever blooming. Xanthosoma mafaffa Lime Zinger Wow! These leaves are stunning! Imagine huge lime green-colored elephant ears held upright. Use in containers as an accent. Grows to 4 feet or more. Z 10 i 48/36/12, Pond side Needs wet feet. Zantedeschia Edge of Night PP14926 (syn. Z. Dark Star ) (Sande) The dramatic richly colored 3 flowers resemble black velvet and add a new dimension to this popular group of plants. Black edges outline the glossy green, silver-flecked leaves and provide the perfect backdrop for the floral display. Edge of Night has a multitude of uses including mixed containers and garden plantings. In colder regions of the country, Edge of Night can also be moved indoors for winter-long enjoyment. One of Europe s most popular cut flowers comes to American gardeners via Terra Nova Nurseries. Z /12/30 This is SO cool! 11
