2 Magnolia 'Blushing Belle' We are proud to offer this Magnolia as a 1 year bud, heavy field transplant. Ready for a #5 or #7 pot. This cultivar shows flower buds in the first year. Wow! In a crowded field of magnolia varieties, this one is clearly a new national treasure. Precocious bloom character Many of our 1-year plants strut big fuzzy flower buds in the first autumn after we bud them. So all you have to do is pot them up in a #5 or #7 and sell them once they fill out the pot with new roots. Heavy root systems and vigorous straight stems mean you ll sell them quickly at a premium. Use them as a bit of a reward for your key customers - we have photos to support your promotional efforts. Incredible hardiness The flower buds have survived a low of 24 below zero, but that may not be its low temperature limit; experience will tell. Almost any gardener within Zones 5-9 can plant this beauty and have confidence it will emerge just fine from their worst cold snap. Diminutive size It will fit all but the most compact gardens, with mature size projected to be feet tall. WOW-effect flowers abundant on the vigorous stems, darker pink on the underside when the flowers emerge, and lighter soft pink shades on the upper side of the blooms when they open. Most flowers are fully open well ahead of the emergent leaves, giving an uncluttered appreciation of their amazing charm. Among the rich diversity of magnolia species and varieties, we ve always held Magnolia denudata and Magnolia Daybreak in the highest esteem for the purity of color and rich flowering character they bring to the garden annually. But this newcomer may bump Daybreak out of the top two spots to #3. We have not seen a new magnolia cultivar to beat this one in at least 10 years. 3 Acer shirasawanum Moonrise Munn 001 Distinctively different from any other Japanese maple due to its brilliant red emerging spring leaves that fade gradually to yellow. The effect is dazzling, and lingers for weeks until the weather really gets hot. This is a tree you will notice from across the field or down the street. Given that the species is small, this selection will earn a spot in almost any garden within Zones 5-9 where it can be planted in a large container or a well-drained acidic soil. It also tolerates heat well if afforded wind protection and is not left to languish in a salty or extremely dry site. Showy across the seasons, it will likely not exceed 12 feet tall by 8-10 feet wide, so it seems a perfect choice for a specimen tree. An exceptional replacement for traditional varieties of Japanese maples like Sango Kaku, Bloodgood, or Seiryu. Plant one in your own yard and your neighbors will all want one. In their words, Greensleves is one of the very best C. kousa varieties available. So trust their judgment and line-out a plentiful supply in your pot block or field. We see its merits here in Oregon, with glossy green foliage and consistently strong bud-set in the fall for a vigorous summer bloom. Its long-lasting flowers are reliably handsome year after year. In the nursery, it grows very vigorously, giving a quick turnover on your inventory. An excellent crop of 2-3 ft. bareroot liners are still available, so shipping expenses are modest. Withhold slow release fertilizer until they start growing strongly in your pots so you don t injure new roots with too much salt. Then top-dress. If you line them out in the field, timely weed control is about all they ask for. Due to the thin bark of young dogwoods, use caution when applying Roundup near them. Direct your spray crews to be extremely careful - use shielded nozzles, drift control agent, and spray on a day with no wind. This Chinese Dogwood may not have the name recognition of Satomi or Milky Way, but when your customers see it they will want it. 5 Corylus avellana Red Dragon From the hazelnut breeding program at Oregon State University, this new red-leaved, contorted variety is distinctively different by its resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Of modest stature to 8 feet in 10 years, it s adapted in Zones 4-8 and offers a disease-free alternative to Contorta with attractive red foliage fading to green as summer progresses. Contrast to Red Majestic which lacks disease resistance.
