2 Compost Jeffries Organic Compost As a soil improver/conditioner To add to existing soil If you have nutrient depleted soil If your soil struggles to retain moisture If you have sandy soil If you have clay soil Reg No 5125M AS 4454 LIC 2017 SAI Global Creates stronger, healthier root and plant growth, as it: Increases organic carbon in the soil Improves aeration and water infiltration Increases nutrient uptake by plant roots Provides micro-organisms vital for soil fertility Improves plant resilience against disease and during extreme conditions Helps keep soil temperatures more constant - cooler in summer and warmer at night Keeping your in the loop Only a decade ago, most compostable material from council collections would have gone straight to landfill. Today however, Jeffries is a leading innovator, sustainably recovering previously wasted organic resources and turning them into high quality and nutritious soil conditioners, soil products and mulch for your veggie patch and. We call it closing the loop - processing green organics into great quality products that you can apply to your soil and s to grow stronger and healthier plants, fruit and veg. The scraps and byproducts of growing can then be put in your green bins at home and will start the process again through our production facility. Using Jeffries products not only adds valuable organic matter to your soil, helping your resist the extremes of Adelaide summer and winter temperatures, it also helps your plants get the most from your soil by enhancing nutrient uptake, increasing soil water-holding capacity and reducing evaporation and run-off. Adding compost, applying mulch or using our premium soil products will set up your s for years of productive growth. We want to be the best at what we do, so that you know you are choosing the best for your. Proudly made from recycled organics
3 Applying compost new beds 1. Spread Jeffries Organic Compost over the existing soil surface 20-50mm deep 2. Dig through the soil with a fork or spade to a depth of mm 3. Water in thoroughly when finished 4. Plant as normal 5. Mulch the new surface to lock in moisture Handy hint: for clay soils, add gypsum at a rate of 1kg per m 2 at the time of application. existing beds Scrape away any existing mulch Remove some existing soil if necessary to ensure the total soil level remains the same Follow the first two steps above, being careful not to disturb existing plant roots Water in thoroughly when finished Replace and top up mulch as required on top of the soil as a mulch if it is not possible to dig Jeffries Organic Compost into the soil, your will still benefit from application on top of the soil. Spread Jeffries Organic Compost over the existing soil surface 20-50mm deep Leave a 50mm gap around existing plants Water in well allowing organic carbon and nutrients to filter down into the soil 1 spread 20-50mm 2 dig mm 3 water 4 plant 5 mulch mixing compost into your soil mimics the natural process of making soil compost is made up of decomposed organic materialthat plays a number of key roles in your soil organic matter is food for millions of bacteria & fungi which in turn are food for protozoa & nematodes - all important parts of healthy soil. the compost breaks down into the soil and releases nutrients that can be used immediately by plant roots. the resulting improved soil structure & organic matter hold more water in the soil. organic matter is also food for earth worms which creates air channels for water & air to reach plant roots & provide nutrients from their poop! when to apply Jeffries Organic Compost can be added at any time of year We recommend applying Jeffries Organic Compost at least once every year to condition your soil An ideal time is late Autumn/early Winter Compost is not recommended as a growing medium in itself. For maximum benefit we recommend mixing with your soil. Please take care, we recommend using gloves and a dust mask when handling compost. this complex web of life in the soil helps form structure which holds soil in place. the big tip: increasing biodiversity in your soil makes your soil healthier, releases plant available nutrients & holds more water. freecall 1800JEFFRIES
4 Soils Jeffries Special Soil As a topsoil to establish new beds To top up existing beds In new homes where topsoil has been depleted Underneath new instant lawn (not recommended as a lawn top dressing) In place of a standard sandy loam when you want added benefits from organic matter AS 4419 LIC 2016 SAI Global Rich in organic matter and free-draining Improved soil structure allowing better water infiltration and increased soil aeration Improved moisture holding capacity, reducing water consumption and cost A gradual release of nutrients Beneficial micro-organisms that support healthier, sustained growth Jeffries Veggie & Garden Soil For raised beds For veggie patches Light weight soil suitable for rooftop s For large tubs and planter boxes For courtyard s and ferneries Reg No 5125M Highest level of organic matter of all Jeffries soils, retaining moisture where it is needed most at the root zone Open structure, meaning it is a free draining mix and resists compaction (often a problem in raised s) Provides plants with vital organic nutrients Promotes healthy root establishment and growth Jeffries Hydrocell Soil (made to order) Where extra water retention and structure is needed, such as sandy soils Light-weight mix good for rooftop and vertical s Remediating/replanting trees AS 4419 LIC 2016 SAI Global Holds water, nutrients and air for plant roots to access as required Made with high quality ingredients including Jeffries Organic Compost Hydrocell lasts for up to 7 years in the soil profile Excellent for instant lawn and application (not suitable for top dressing of lawn) Half the water, twice the growth! 5 Spread your soil Adelaide s biggest rooftop Prepare the site properly before spreading a new topsoil 1. Loosen up the base soil first using a fork (approximately one spade depth). 1 loosen South Australia s largest rooftop is right above the queues of people waiting to get inside the Adelaide Zoo. Jeffries supplied 400 tonnes of Jeffries Special Soil, 240 cubic metres of Jeffries Forest Mulch, and 220 cubic metres of Jeffries Hydrocell Soil the ideal product for a rooftop. For a clay base, spread 1kg per m 2 of Gypsum, then work with the fork or a claybreaker spade and water the gypsum in. Leave the base soil rough after digging (this exposes more surface area and helps to avoid layering ). 2. Spread Jeffries Special Soil evenly over the base soil. 2 spread Designed to be a light-weight growing medium, Jeffries Hydrocell Soil is a blend including Jeffries Organic Compost and Hydrocell TM, an amazing product specifically designed to hold water, air and nutrients and will last up to 7 years in your soil. Perfect for establishing instant turf and rooftop s or for your most prized plants, Jeffries Hydrocell Soil is the perfect product for when rethinking how your grows. 3. Dampen the soil lightly. It should be damp, but not saturated so that it smears. 3 water 4. Top off with a layer of Jeffries mulch to protect your new topsoil from drying out and wind erosion. Avoid walking over the newly laid soil to minimise compaction. Create pathways or stepping stones for access where possible and kneel on timber boards when planting (to spread your weight). 4 mulch Please take care, we recommend using gloves and a dust mask when handling soil. freecall 1800JEFFRIES

9 Getting the most from your Mulch 1. Spread mulch over the soil surface to a depth of 50-75mm mm Why mulch? Peter Lehman Wines have been using Jeffries Dura Mulch on their vineyards for the last 5 years. The driving force behind this decision has been rising water costs throughout the Barossa region however the less expected longterm benefits have other grape growers excited with the prospect of using mulch. Using mulch in modern viticultural practices is a smart choice to reduce water losses and therefore reduce water inputs and costs, but the ongoing added benefits of improved soil health and structure, consistent soil conditions, improvement in fruit quality and the addition of nutirents is gaining respect in grape growing regions. 2. Keep a small space between mulch and base of plants 2 Mulch is used on 45 hectares of the Peter Lehmann vineyards and with rising water and electricity costs, improved soil health will be a key factor in keeping these costs down. Early benefits of applying mulch are well known, but vinyerons are now understanding that the longterm benefits from mulch continue up to 5 to 7 years after application. Flow-on effects of good soil health include: better soil structure 3. Water in thoroughly when finished, ensuring the water is penetrating the mulch and wetting the soil below 3 increased water holding capacity lower irrigation (and pumping) inputs increased earthworm and soil microbial activity Area may need fewer, heavier irrigations to ensure the plant root zone is wet each time Ensure any irrigation drip lines lie between the soil and mulch layers Please take care, we recommend using gloves and a dust mask when handling mulch. freecall 1800JEFFRIES

14 Growing in a raised bed A raised bed can often be a great way to grow herbs, fruit and veg at home, and terraced beds make a design interesting and functional. When filling your raised or backfilling a terrace, you will want to ensure you use a product that resists compaction and is free of weed seeds. Jeffries Veggie & Garden Soil is the perfect blend of organics and sand that resists compaction, retains moisture and adds nutrients for healthy soil (and healthy plants). It is also a good option if your veggie or plants are growing up the wall in a vertical Topped with Jeffries Forest Mulch or Recover Mulch (with added Blood and Bone), your will also resist drying out and keep adding nutrients throughout the season. Future-proofing your raised bed Made with enough organic matter, your raised bed should never need digging as they are generally not walked on and the soil should remain loose and friable so that if any weeds grow, they are easily pulled out and your plants will flourish. In following seasons do not turn over the soil, just add Organic Compost to the surface and another layer of mulch adding organic nutrients to your bed for your plants over the coming growing season. It is important to have adequate drainage to avoid the soil getting boggy below or near the root zone. Install a mm layer of gravel in the bottom of your raised bed prior to filling with Veggie & Garden Soil. This will allow any excess water to transition through and away from the bed. Adding a layer of geofabric over the gravel before filling with soil will stop the soil mixing with the gravel. Proudly made from recycled organics
15 Recycle Right When you see this symbol it means that your product has been produced by Jeffries from recycled green organics. Sources include household green organics (from your green bin), food leftovers, timber, branches and vegetation from s. nearly half of your household waste can be composted! Environmental benefits Recycling green organics minimises the impact of depleting raw natural resources. It also returns valuable carbon back to the soil and diverts the organics from landfill where they produce harmful methane gas. Benefits for your There are many benefits for your that are only acheivable by adding organic matter back into the soil. Composting on a large scale means that we can all enjoy the benefits of compost even if we do not have the space or the time to manage a compost heap in our own backyard. If it didn t grow, it doesn t go Sometimes inorganic materials such as plant pots/tags, string, plastic bags and even glass bottles end up in home green bins, and in turn, end up in the green organics that is delivered to Jeffries for recycling into compost, soil and mulch. Although Jeffries continues to invest in innovative screening and sorting systems to remove these non-compostable materials, the occasional piece of plastic, metal or glass may find its way through to the final product. Any such pieces will not affect the quality or performance of the product or the health of your plants, in any way. plastics are sucked out glass & cans are recycled The better we become at ensuring only organic materials go in our green bin at home, the purer the end product will be! To find out what can and can t go in your green organics bin at home please go to Thank you Thank you for supporting sustainability by using a quality recycled organic product from Jeffries. freecall 1800JEFFRIES
