Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Meanwhile, in a skillet, cook sausage until no longer pink; drain and cool. Stir in mozzarella, 2 eggs and basil; set aside. Punch dough down; divide in half. Roll one portion into a 15 x10 rectangle on a greased baking sheet. Spoon half of the sausage mixture lengthwise down one side of rectangle to within 1 inch of edges. Fold dough over filling; pinch edges to seal. Cut four diagonal slits on top of stromboli. Repeat with remaining dough and filling. Beat remaining egg; brush over loaves. Sprinkle with Parmesan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake at for minutes or until golden brown. Just the other weekend, I awoke on Saturday, January 23, 2016, to the morning news on Channel 11 that the powerful winter storm churning its way up the East Coast had dumped up to 2 feet of snow in places and was affecting over 50 million people. Its effects reached into Southwestern PA as the westbound PA Turnpike had come to a complete standstill, due to the extremely poor road conditions between Breezewood and Somerset, stranding hundreds of cars, light trucks, buses, and tractortrailers along with their unfortunate motorists. Amongst those stalled by the snow storm was the Duquesne University men s basketball team and the morning news kept getting periodic cellphone updates, including photos, of their plight in the excessive snowfall. The news also reported the PA National Guard was responding to help assist those unprepared individuals caught out in the storm. That same storm had little to no impact here with measurable snowfalls remaining south of our area. Late that morning, I travelled out to Camp Agawam in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, to address the assembled Boy Scouts at their 2016 Klondike Derby. It was the third time local Scout Leader, Bruce Gibson, gave me the opportunity to talk to the young men, at least one young woman, and their leaders about the important subject: Dress for Winter Success: No Matter What the Cold Weather Brings. I recognized several familiar faces amongst the Scouts and their accompanying adults from my previous visit in January 2014, but with their highly relevant motto of Be Prepared!, everyone in attendance was very attentive and eager to implement the outdoor skills they were learning. I shared with my audience The Rule of 3 s when it comes to the outdoors: you can survive three weeks without food, three days without water, but only three hours without shelter in harsh inclement weather (what used to be called death from exposure). We covered how we lose body heat through: (1) radiation your warm body just gives off heat to a cold external environment, (2) convection think wind chill and the cooling effect of moving air, and (3) conduction your body losing heat to warm up a cold bleacher seat or a rock you are sitting on. Our discussion then turned to hypothermia: a potentially dangerous drop in body temperature caused by a prolonged exposure to cold without enough warm, dry clothing for protection. Hypothermia occurs when core body temperature, which is normally around 98.6 F, drops below 95.0 F resulting in involuntary shivering, confusion, loss of coordination, and many other debilitating symptoms. I stressed to the Scouts we can pursue our favorite outdoor activities and enjoy time afield all winter long, if we are prepared and dress for success. There is an old Norwegian saying, There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices. As the Scout motto stresses, when it comes to the cold, we must Be Prepared by dressing for the worst possible weather or at least have the cold weather clothing/gear with you. I shared my knowledge regarding cold weather and dressing properly comes from my experience at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska from There we would go to the field for several weeks when the temperature never rose above 40 below zero and I personally experienced cold down to -82 F (that was the temperature, not the wind chill) during Joint Field Training Exercise Brim Frost in January Next week, we re going to explore common sense practices you can follow to ensure you and your loved ones remain safe, and as comfortable as possible, in a future cold weather situation should you ever become a stranded motorist or otherwise caught out-in-the-cold. Luke 1:16 Many of America s 30 million white-tailed deer find themselves endangered not by guns, but by the cars of our expanding suburbs. I was reminded of their plight when a mature doe dashed through traffic just ahead of me. As I watched, I wondered what had driven her to take such a chance, and why she then stopped on the other side and looked back over her shoulder. As I drove by her, I turned to follow her gaze and saw two small fawns looking helplessly at their mother across the busy street. Instead of following, they turned and walked back into the woods. This family is not alone. We too can find ourselves in circumstances of separation and danger we did not anticipate. Reading Malachi and Matthew reminds us that we are troubled children of troubled parents who desperately need the help of our Father in heaven. Sometimes we need His help to see and avoid repeating the sins of our fathers (Neh. 9:2-3). Sometimes we need His help to turn back to the example and care of loving parents (Luke 15:18). Only from our heavenly Father can we find the perfect forgiveness, example, and inner grace we need. He knows we are all fallen children of fallen parents, and even now He offers us the help of His Spirit and the rescue of His Son.
