10 a8 Chain Store Guide Details & Definitions CRITERIA FOR INCLUSION This directory contains companies operating two or more stores (or internet-only) with industry sales of at least $2,000,000 where the primary business is grocery retailing. Below are the types of business included in the directory: Combo Store - A supermarket whose product mix includes at least 40% non-food items. Convenience Store - Food retailer with limited product lines contained in a sales area of 1,000 to 3,000 sq. ft. concentrating on selected, fast-moving products. Gourmet Supermarket - A supermarket offering gourmet and high-end products, as well as standard grocery items. There is also an emphasis on customer service, fresh foods, take-out meals and catering. Supercenter - A full-line, self-service market, including specialty departments. Total sales area is greater than 30,000 sq. ft. Supermarket - A full-line, self-service market. Warehouse Store - A food retailer where the frills of a supermarket are eliminated and the focus of the store is low prices. Most warehouse stores concentrate on a core of dry grocery items and limit the amount of customer service available. FORMAT OF DIRECTORY Sample Company Profile - This is an example of a company profile listing including an explanation of layout. Explanation of Data Elements - Here you will find a glossary of data elements and their definitions listed in alphabetical order. Statistical Analysis of Contents - A statistical look at the industry, derived from the companies in this directory. Beginning each state is a breakdown showing the regional CBSA. The definition below is an abbreviated version of that which is issued by the US Government. A request for the full definition should be sent to: Statistical Policy Office, Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Office of the Management and Budget, Washington, DC CBSA - (Core Based Statistical Area) - CBSAs must contain at least one urban area of 10,000 or more population, either a metropolitan statistical area (one urbanized area of 50,000 or more inhabitants) or a micropolitan statistical area (at least one urban cluster of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000 population). The general concept of a metropolitan or micropolitan statistical area is that of a core area containing a substantial population nucleus, together with adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core. Metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas comprise one or more entire counties. Located at the end of the directory are several indexes for quick reference. The indexes included in this directory are: Trading Area Index - This index lists companies by the region in which they operate stores. Alphabetical Index - This index is a combined alphabetical index listing all companies, stores and ownership names within this directory. Exclusions Index - This is an index of all companies which appeared in the directory last year but are not included this year. This index is divided into two categories: Out-of- Business/NQ and Acquired/Merged Companies are arranged alphabetically.

The total number of units appears in the top right corner for all retail listings. Areas of Operation - This lists the US states and territories and Canadian provinces in which the company operates stores. Average Check-Outs - This is the average number of check-out points per location. Branded Foodservice - This lists the concepts names of the company s foodservice operations, with a store count for each concept (convenience store companies only). Company - This is the address at which the company receives electronic mail. Personal addresses are available online. Company-Owned Units This indicates the number of units owned and operated by the company and excludes franchised units. C-Store Sales - This is the revenue derived from convenience store sales. Distribution Center The indicator denotes a Distribution Center within the company s corporate hierarchy. Distribution Centers - This lists the locations in which the company operates distribution centers. Divisional Offices - This is the name and location of the company s divisional offices. Divisional/Regional Office - The indicator denotes a Divisional Office or Regional Office within a corporate hierarchy. Fax Number - This is the company s primary fax number. Foodservice Operations - This indicates whether the unit is operated by the C-store owner, by third-party operators or both. Foodservice Sales - This is the revenue derived from prepared food sales and includes revenue from institutional foodservice and restaurant foodservice. For chains that franchise, sales include franchise and/or license fees in addition to revenues from company-owned units. Foodservice Wholesalers - This lists the name and location of the wholesale distributor supplying the company with food, equipment and supplies. Franchise Affiliation This lists the name and location of the company s franchise headquarters. Gasoline Brands - This indicates the brands of gasoline sold through the company s retail outlets. Gasoline Sales - This is the percentage of revenue derived from gasoline sales. Grocery/Merchandise Sales - This is the percentage of revenue derived from grocery/general merchandise sales (Convenience store companies only). Grocery Sales - This is the revenue derived from retail grocery sales. Headquarter Offices - This is the name and location of subordinate headquarters offices for corporate listings. Headquarters - This is the name and location of the company s headquarters office to which a subordinate office reports. Internet Homepage - This is the company s Internet homepage address. Internet Order Processing - This indicates the company sells products and collects payment via an Internet homepage. Internet-Only Retailer - The indicator denotes a company that operates as an Internet-Only Retailer. Key Personnel - This lists executive, administrative and buying personnel with their titles as reported by the company. Loyalty Marketing Program - Company program administered through the stores that link membership rewards and discounts to consumer-buying habits. Mailing Address - This is the mailing address, city, state or province, and ZIP or postal code of the company, if it differs from the primary address. New Listing This indicates a company that was not included in the previous year s edition of this publication. Notes - This is any pertinent company information that does not appear in other data elements collected.

14 a12 Chain Store Guide Explanation of Data Elements Number of Employees - This is the total number of employees of this company. On-site Distribution Center - This indicates that the company operates a distribution center at the same address. Operates Convenience Stores - The indicator denotes a company that operates Convenience Stores in addition to supermarkets. Packaged Liquor - This lists the types of packaged alcoholic beverages sold. Parent Company - This is the name and location of the parent company. Preferred Square Footage - This indicates the standard or projected size of new or remodeled units for the company. Primary Wholesalers - This lists the type of wholesaler, name and location of the wholesale company which supplies merchandise to this store. Projected Openings - This is the number of units the company plans to open during the next 12 months. Projected Remodelings - This is the number of units the company plans to remodel during the next 12 months. Publicly Held - This indicates that company issues shares of unrestricted stock to the general public. Regional Offices - This is the name and location of the company s regional offices. Specialty Departments - This lists specific areas at each location featuring a group of related product categories or services. Subsidiaries - This is the name and location of the company s subsidiaries. Trade Names - This indicates the names the company uses to do business at the store level, and the number of units operating under each name. Total Sales - This is the most current sales figure available for the company and typically represents the company s most recent fiscal year end. Sources for sales figures are: 1) an estimated sales figure provided by the company; 2) an exact sales figure taken from the annual report of a public company; 3) an estimate derived by CSG through industry research. CSG estimates are noted with an (e). Total Selling Sq. Ft. - This is the total retail selling square footage of the company. Total Units - This is the total number of units the company currently operates and/or franchises to others. Units Franchised From - This indicates the number of units franchised from a franchise headquarters. Units Franchised To - This indicates the number of units franchised to other companies. Units Operated - This indicates the types and number of retail locations operated. Year Founded - This is the year in which the company was established. ALSO AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY Areas of Expansion - This lists the states and provinces in which the company anticipates opening new stores, when provided by the company. CBSA - This is the Core Base Statistical Area code of the company, assigned by the US Bureau of Census. Latitude - This is the latitude coordinate of the company, based on the primary address. Locations - This lists the trade name, address, phone number, and manager s name for company locations. Longitude - This is the longitude coordinate of the company, based on the primary address. Preferred Location Types - This indicates the real-estate types in which the company operates units. Projected Closings - This is the number of units the company plans to close during the next 12 months.
