Be sure to save your sales receipt. It is your best record of the date of purchase, which is required for warranty service. Read and follow all cautions, warnings and notes. cautions To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not remove any parts of the speaker. There are no user serviceable parts inside. If service is required have it performed by a qualified service professional. WARNING! To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the speakers to rain or submerge in water. The speakers should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or other heat sources. Be sure all the components in the system are turned off while making audio and power connections. WARNING! Mounting brackets must be attached to speaker cabinet exactly as shown. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in the bracket to cabinet attachment failing, and may result in injury or damage to property. CORRECT WRONG BRACKET 1

3 cabinet bracket installation Your HT300 or HT400LCR bookshelf speakers are provided with a unique cabinet bracket assembly that allows the speaker to be mounted using universal or custom-fabricated brackets. Because of the weight of the HT300/400LCR, these cabinet brackets must be installed carefully and according to the supplied instructions and diagrams in order prevent risk of personal injury or property damage. Please study the diagram showing the correct orientation for the cabinet brackets prior to beginning the assembly and mounting process. Note: the cabinet brackets only work correctly when installed as shown. Failure to install the cabinet bracket correctly may result in the speaker cabinet falling. Determine the correct location for the cabinet bracket on the rear cabinet surface that is required for the specific installation. Note: it is generally better to keep the bracket located more towards the center of the cabinet as the suspended weight is more evenly distributed. Insert the bolt or other mounting hardware that will be used to fasten the cabinet bracket to the mounting bracket or arm. Make sure the bolt or securing hardware is tightened prior to placing the cabinet bracket in place against the rear panel of the HT speaker cabinet. Secure the bracket to the cabinet as shown using the supplied set screws, making sure the bracket rotates completely under the slotted edge of the rear cabinet. Note: the set screws must line up and engage the small slot on either vertical side of the rear cabinet panel. Failure to properly locate the bracket and secure these screws correctly may cause the cabinet bracket assembly to separate from the cabinet, allowing it to fall. Once the bracket and set screws are properly positioned, tighten the set screws to lock the bracket in position. Make sure the set screws stay locked in the cabinet grooves as they are tightened. speaker placement Where you locate the speakers in the room plays a vital role in the sound quality you will enjoy. Since every room is a little different, you should experiment with various locations to see which gives the best sound in your particular application. Here are some general guidelines to help you select appropriate locations In general, your speakers will have the smoothest response and best imaging when located at least two to four feet from the back and side walls in the listening room. Moving a speaker closer to one or more of the boundaries will increase the bass output. In some rooms, the extra bass may sound good while in others it may cause the bass to sound too strong. Hard surfaces near a speaker can affect the distribution of high frequencies. Think of a hard wall as if it is a mirror. Just as a mirror will reflect a nearby object so that you see a second "virtual" object, a hard wall will reflect sound so that you hear a second "virtual" source of the sound. If the reflected sound is strong enough it will confuse the imaging of the system. If the speakers are placed near side walls, try toeing the speakers towards the center of the room. Drapes or cloth hangings on nearby walls will help to cut down undesired reflections. Drapes are particularly helpful if the speaker is adjacent to windows or glass doors. center channel The HT400LCR when positioned on its side, and placed in the optional HT base, functions as an accurate and exceptional center channel speaker. The HT400LCR may be placed either above or below the video monitor when using a direct view or rear projection set. The base of the HT series allows the speaker to be tilted up or down, simply place the speaker on the base in the desired orientation. The HT400LCR may also be used without the base by positioning it vertically, which is the recommended orientation for optimum horizontal dispersion. With front projection video monitors, the center channel is commonly placed below the screen. Alternatively, by using an acoustically transparent perforated screen it may be placed in a vertical orientation, directly behind the screen for optimum imaging. 2

4 main speaker separation A good rule of thumb is to start by arranging your preferred listening position and the left and right speakers positions, such that they represent the points of an equilateral triangle. You should then experiment by varying the separation and the horizontal angle of the speakers until you reach the sonic sound stage that you prefer. Although all of the HT series speakers are video shielded, placing them next to a TV monitor will not typically give adequate separation. When possible, move the speakers a few feet away from either side of the monitor. Also, when the center channel speaker is used, the left and right speakers should be located so they are approximately the same distance from the listening position as the center channel. If they are too far forward, you will lose integrity of the center image. If they are too far away, separation and image width will suffer. connections wire Use two-conductor stranded-type, insulated wire to connect the speakers to the amplifier. There are many types of high performance wire available for speaker connection. Your a/d/s/ retail dealer can recommend appropriate wire. If you want, standard "lamp" wire or "zip cord" can be used. Use 16 gauge for runs less than 50 feet, and use 14 gauge or larger, for longer runs. Using wire smaller than 16 gauge is not recommended. connecting the speakers The HT series have color-coded spring loaded input terminals. Pressing the spring loaded terminals expose holes in the post. Insert stripped or terminated wires into the exposed hole. Release the terminals to clamp the wire into place. polarity The polarity (the positive/negative orientation of the connections) for every speaker-to-wire and wire-to-amplifier connection must be the same so that the speakers will be "in phase". If the polarity of one connection is reversed, bass output is reduced and stereo imaging is degraded. High frequency level switch The high frequency level switch alters the amplitude of the frequency band from 2kHz to 20kHz. High (up) position on the frequency level switch gives a 3dB boost in the high frequency band. Low (down) position on the frequency level switch results in a flat frequency response. Although this switch allows you to adjust for personal preference, a/d/s/ recommends that the low position be utilized for systems that do not contain a subwoofer. 3

5 troubleshooting Most difficulties with high fidelity equipment result from loose connections, bad connecting cables or improperly set switches. No sound Dull or muted sound Distorted sound Noise or hum It is rare for a speaker to fail completely. When there is no sound, check all the speaker wire connections and electronic equipment settings. Operating the speakers at an unsafe power level can damage the speakers. Take the speakers to your retail dealer or an authorized service agency. Distortion at moderate levels can be caused by loose connections or stray wire strands shorting out an adjacent wire at the amplifier or speaker terminals. If you hear distortion or any type of buzzing or rattling sound from an individual driver, contact your a/d/s/ dealer. Continuous noise or hum are always from the electronic equipment and not from the speakers. 4

7 warranty information LIMITED TWO YEAR CONSUMER WARRANTY Directed Electronics, Inc. promises to the original purchaser, to replace this product should it prove to be defective in workmanship or material under normal use, for a period of two years from the date of purchase from the dealer as indicated by the date code marking of the product PROVIDED the product was installed by an authorized Directed dealer. During this two-year period, there will be no charge for this replacement PROVIDED the unit is returned to Directed, shipping pre-paid. If the unit is installed by anyone other than an authorized Directed dealer, the warranty period will be one year from the date of purchase by the dealer as indicated by the date code marking of the product. This warranty is nontransferable and does not apply to any unit that has been modified or used in a manner contrary to its intended purpose, and does not cover damage to the unit caused by installation or removal of the unit. During this one-year period, there will be no charge for this replacement PROVIDED the unit is returned to Directed, shipping pre-paid. This warranty is void if the product has been damaged by accident or unreasonable use, neglect, improper service or other causes not arising out of defects in materials or construction. Units which are found to be damaged by abuse resulting in thermally damaged voice coils are not covered by this warranty but may be replaced at the absolute/sole discretion of Directed.
