1 Flipper Fidelity Stern FF-STN-SPK-8-W Speaker Installation Instructions Thank you for purchasing the Flipper Fidelity speaker kit for a Stern Pinball machine. Your kit includes the following: (1) 8 Woofer with Crossover (2) 4 Speakers with wiring harness and integrated spacers (1) 4P to 2P adaptor (inset photo, not used on all machines) (1) Volume Control Assembly (2) ½ #6 Wood Screws (8) 1 #8 Wood Screws (2) Insulated crimp on spade connectors Please make sure all parts are present before starting your installation. Tools required for kit installation: 1/4 nut driver. 5/16 nut driver. Wire terminal crimping tool w/ wire cutter. Note: Use of a drill driver or powered screwdriver is not recommended. Avoid over-tightening. The fasteners used by Stern, and those included in this kit, need only be tightened enough to hold the component in place and prevent vibration when in use. Please allow approximately 30 minutes to install. This kit requires no permanent modification to the machine. You may want to take photos of your particular machine in the event you wish to accurately restore it to its original configuration. Step One Machine Preparation. Make sure you have adequate space available to access the front and both sides of the machine. Make sure the machine is turned off and unplugged from its power source. To install this kit you will need to remove the translite to access the back box speakers, speaker connections, and to mount the volume control. Woofer installation requires access to the inside of the base cabinet. If you are not familiar with the procedures to access these areas, i.e. removal of the translite, removal of the playfield glass, and raising the playfield to the service position; please refer to the Stern owners manual. Step Two Remove the back-box speakers. First, remove the translite. For safety, I would find a towel to drape across the machine for the speaker/display panel to rest on. This will protect both your speaker/display panel and the side rails from getting scratched. Lay the panel on its front, spanning across the side rails. See photo. Carefully examine the existing installation of the back box speakers. The flat wires going to the fasteners holding the existing back box speakers are ground straps which must be replaced when the new speakers are installed. There is a piece of tape holding the speaker wire connecting the two speakers together. Carefully remove this tape. I like to use it later, in the same manner, to secure the new wiring harness.

2 This system was designed with the parts and pieces to fit in all Stern machines with a wood speaker panel. Here is where machines can differ. Step Two.One for the following machines: 24, AC/DC Pro, Austin Powers, Avatar, Avatar LE, Batman, Big Buck Hunter, Black Spiderman, CSI, Elvis, Family Guy, Godzilla, Harley Davidson, High Roller Casino, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Lord of the Rings, Monopoly, NASCAR, NBA, Pirates of the Caribbean, Playboy, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones LE, Sharkey's Shootout, Shrek, Sopranos, South Park, Spiderman, Striker Extreme, Terminator 3, The Simpsons Pinball Party, Transformers, Transformers LE, Transformers LE (all), Transformers LE Autobot, Transformers LE Decepticon, TRON, TRON LE, Wheel of Fortune, World Poker Tour, Xmen Pro Locate the existing speaker connector which consists of two, two-wire Molex connectors held together with a z-clip. Disconnect the connector coming from the speakers leaving the z-clip attached to the connector coming from the audio board. Step Two.Two for the following machines: ACDC Back in Black LE, ACDC Let There Be Rock LE, ACDC Premium, Avengers Blue Team LE, Avengers Hulk LE, Avengers Pro, Metallica, Metallica LE, Metallica Premium, Xmen LE Locate the existing speaker connector which consists of a 4 pin AMP connector. Disconnect the connector coming from the speakers. This is a good time to install the supplied four pin to two pin adapter with attached two pin z-clip.

3 You will need a ¼ nut-driver for speaker removal. Both speakers are attached to each other so be careful not to let one fall. This could result in damage to the machine. Remove all hex screws from each speaker. I find it is easier to do the right one first, place this speaker in the back box, then remove the left speaker. Once all 8 screws are removed, carefully remove the speakers and set aside. There are two ground wires attached to the speakers and speaker grills. Don t lose track of them, as they will need to be reattached in the next step. Step Three Installation of the back-box speakers Included in this kit are (8) #8 1 screws. You will need them for this step. Attach the wiring harness to one of the 4 speakers, connecting the blue spade connectors; the wide connector to the wide terminal (also marked - ), the narrow connector to the narrow terminal (also marked + ). Then, place this speaker (with the wires attached) to the right of the display. The wires and speaker terminals will be closest to the back box. Attach to the panel using the new screws supplied. Be careful when lining this all up, and do not forget the ground wire. It is not hard to grab the wrong hole in the speaker grill. Take your time. Attach the remaining speaker, in the same manner, to the left of the display. Run the wires with the pink spade connectors from the right speaker to the left speaker and, following the same convention, carefully push them on to their corresponding speaker terminals.

4 Step Four Volume Control Installation. Mounting the Volume Control Several options exist for mounting the volume control. The volume control is attached to a metal L-bracket with two small holes on the side. You can mount the volume control using the two ½ #6 screws provided. The screws will fit snugly into the holes and can easily be driven in by hand with a ¼ nut driver. The volume control assembly can be screwed in anywhere on the right side of the back box. I like to attach it very low, just behind the speaker panel. This gives enough room to add a Flipper Fidelity LED Panel. Here you can see the volume control mounted to the back box speaker panel using one of the LED display panel mounting screws. The volume control can be conveniently mounted to the inside of the coindoor with the addition of the Flipper Fidelity Stern Volume Control Coindoor Relocation Kit. 5 Connecting the Volume Control. There are two wires coming off the volume control. One is 2 shorter than the other. The shorter wire has a z-clip attached to it. This shorter wire connects to the connector coming off your new back box speakers. The longer wire connects to the lead coming off the board. (This is where you disconnected the stock speakers and inserted the 4 pin to two pin adaptor.) Step Five Removal of the base cabinet speaker. Locate the speaker in the base of the cabinet by raising the playfield to the service position. Cut the wires going to the existing woofer. You will want to cut them as close to the speaker terminals as possible. Using a 5/16 nut driver, remove all four nuts holding the speaker in place and remove the speaker. Place the speaker aside as you no longer will be using this. Keep the nuts as you need these in the next step. Step Six Installing the woofer. Your new woofer will fit right on to the four studs to which the factory speaker was mounted. Proceed carefully. It is possible to damage the speaker cone or surround if not properly aligned when lowering the speaker over these studs. I like to have the x-over to the left of the speaker as shown below. Use the four factory nuts to secure the new woofer. Crimp the female spade terminals onto the existing speaker wire. The wire with the white stripe connects to the neg terminal on the woofer. Here is where you have a choice. The new woofer has two positive terminals. The high is the standard input. It in no way affects the output of the woofer. The low reduces the woofer output by about 4db, a minor reduction, but a reduction. This is a way to further tune the sound to your liking. Try the high setting first, then try the low. Leave it where you like it best.

6 Step Seven Adjust the volume control. This will be done to taste. Remember, the volume control you just installed affects only the back box speakers. The machine volume control affects all speakers, thus it can be thought of as a master volume control. I suggest setting the machine volume somewhere between 45 and 54, depending on desired impact.
