3 CASE STUDY HOUSE BACKGROUND Who: By Charles and Ray Eames, a husband and wife that greatly influenced architecture. What: Developed for The Case Study House Program. A challenge to the architectural community by Arts and Architecture Magazine to design homes that express man s daily life in the modern world. Why: Meant to serve as a home that would not require demands, but rather be a place to recharge and reorient oneself with nature. Where: Pacific Palisades Los Angeles, California, USA When: Built in 1949
4 The EAMES The house must make no insistent demands for itself, but rather aid as background for life in work. - Charles Eames Designed for a married couple working in the design or graphic arts field with no children present. Charles and Ray Eames greatly influenced architecture, furniture and textile design, photography and corporate design.
5 CASE STUDY HOUSE PROGRAM This particular site, located at 203 North Chautauqua Boulevard, California, was chosen because it was quiet and surrounded by nature. The back of the house is tucked into the slope of a hill giving privacy while maintaing the natural surroundings. All views from the house are of a wooded setting in the front, and a beach setting in the back. The courtyard between the two structures serves as a subtle transition between the two spaces. 6 APPEARANCE AXONOMETRIC This axonometric shows the horizontality of the overall structure as well as the volumes of the two structures and the voided space between them where the courtyard sits. Both the studio and the living portion of the structures are similar in shape, but the living portion contains a larger volume to accomodate the program.
7 APPEARANCE PLANS The horizontal circulation contributes to the program of the spaces, whereas the vertical circulation divides the public and private spaces. Elevations First Floor Second Floor
8 APPEARANCE ELEVATIONS Designed with three types of functional spaces, a living space, a work space and open spaces designed for relaxation. Living Space Work Space Open Space
9 APPEARANCE SECTIONS Residence Studio Both the studio space and the living space were treated with equal importance creating no hierarchy between the two.
10 CASE STUDY HOUSE CONSTRUCTION Built with materials and techniques developed from the second world war mainly consisiting of glass, concrete and steel. New materials (plywood and plastics) were used by Charles and Ray Eames transforming interior design and making it affordable for middle class Americans.
11 CONCLUSION Formal aspects of the structure help to accommodate activities. The repition created by the structural grid allows for an open floor plan that assists in the social experience created within. The harmony between the studio and the living spaces allow for the experience of one space to transcend into another seamlessly. The new technology and materials used in the Eames house allow for an open floor plan that accomodates social activities. Steel, glass and concrete are durable materials that can resist deterioration due to climate as well as structurally reinforce the space for environmental factors such as earthquakes.
