4 Pet proof. When it comes to living with pets, you ll need more than a lint brush to keep your home looking as good as your pet. These 5 pet-proofing ticks will help you win the battle of fur, nails and hairballs. 1.Take a hard look at your floors. Wood, vinyl, stone, tiles and concrete all make easy cleanup of hair, hairballs, vomit and just about any stain a pet can dish out. They re toenail proof, too, though a big dog may scratch a wood floor. For softness underfoot, use area rugs. You ll be able to soak up fluids from both sides meaning faster drying time and fewer absorbed odors. Rugs can also hide dirt (especially patterned ones) and be replaced. if necessary. If you can t live without carpeted rooms, choose a low, dense pile without loops. 2. Choose easy-clean materials. If your pooch shares your bed, buy a machine washable duvet cover; it s easier to clean than a bedspread. Or lay a blanket or towel where Milo insists on sleeping. Walls and furniture are harder to clean so avoid white or light colors. You might even let your pet inspire your wall hue gold to complement your lab, or perhaps a tropical hue to keep your parrot at home. 3. Groom your pet regularly. Good rule of thumb: it s easier to deal with hair when it s still on your pet! Combing and brushing them regularly, especially duringpet-shedding season can keep the hair battle at bay. Bathing dogs can reduce their odor, and keeping nails trimmed short will save your furniture. Synthetic fabrics that are resistant to dirt, odor and stains. Opt for synthetics that are easily cleaned with a sponge, water and soap. Faux suede is especially popular; it s easy to clean and maintains a comfy temperature year round. Unfortunately some natural fabrics like wool will attract pet hair and even get embedded in the fabric itself. Tough-wearing and easy to clean, leather furniture is well suited to a life with pets. ( a fact that can be comforting and unsettling at the same time.) If you prefer suede, opt for a synthetic version. Faux suede (aka microfiber) makes an excellent choice. Slipcovers. A good choice but only if they re easy to get on and off the furniture! Another option? Cover the sofa with a blanket or throw; it s easily removed for cleaning or company.
