From their headquarters in Hampshire, Linwood collaborates with the finest textile printers, weavers and dyers, in both Britain and across Europe. above left This seaside home takes on a very subtle coastal flavour, with muted blues and greys blended with neutral latte hues for a restful scheme. above right Contrasting multi-patterned cushions (Lagoon, Sail Blue, Latte and Sky Stripe) are all allied by the soothing scheme of soft blue and neutral coffee. This house is on the coast near a pebble beach. We wanted to create a look that had a softly maritime feel but that would also feel relevant in any interior. The blue used here is very washed-out to mute the colour and soften the intensity. As the blue is a soft tone, it works well with neutral colours such as the warm Latte colourway we have used in the blinds. The two colour families work so well together here, because they have the same depth of colour. We have also introduced hints of the coffee colour into the blue patterns on the checks and stripes. The Latte colourway is a lovely coffee tone. Rather than beige, which can be a bit yellowy, coffee colours have a touch of red, which warms them up. Although neutral tones such as this are quite versatile, there are certain colours they would not partner so well. We would steer clear of strong yellows, greens or purples, for example. Instead we would shape the collection around tones of brown, red, grey and of course the blue used here. The coffee colours lend themselves to natural fibres. When you think of latte colours you immediately think of linens and cotton. The natural colours of linen tone very well with coffee colours. I m not a fan of shiny or synthetic fibres in these muted, natural colours. In this collection we have used jute, which has a lovely chunky yarn and offers a great texture. We have tumbled and softened the fabric, as jute can be quite rough, but it still retains its coarser appearance. Visually it looks exciting and has weight and drama, but to the touch it is soft and it drapes well, which is very important. The overall feel we wanted in this room was to be light and fresh, but still have some warmth, which the Latte provides. I think the paint colour is very important in dictating the tone of the room. It s a subtle thing, but has a strong effect on the whole room. If you go for cleaner, whiter paint, as we have, you get a more modern, fresher feel. If you have a softer, more neutral colour perhaps echoing the coffee tones more you get a more traditional look. I would not advise using a yellowy cream, as that would make it feel rather old fashioned. Deciding what paint to use will depend also on the lighting of the room. There are lots of windows here and the paint is very light and fresh, so you get a fresh seaside feel, but it could have taken a darker paint, too, as there is enough light to carry that. In darker rooms you would definitely have needed a light paint. Finally, we have mixed a few patterns here. If you are mixing pattern, you need to unite with colour; if the patterns are plainer you can be more adventurous with colour. It s tricky to do both, as it becomes a complicated mixture. 3 Colour Masterclass kate forman Founder, Kate Forman Designs After a career in antiques and interior design, Forman launched her own company in 2004, featuring French-inspired designs with nineteenth-century influences. Farrow & Ball s Smoked Trout paint provides a warm backdrop to Kate Forman s fabric collection in her drawing room. This drawing room gets the sunshine in the morning, but it can be quite dark in the afternoon. I previously had it painted in Lamp Room Gray (Farrow & Ball) which looks so smart, but it just felt rather cold, so I went for a warm palette. I wanted something with pink tones, as pink is my favourite colour, and I wanted to use some of the pink fabrics from my collections. Smoked Trout, as the name suggests, has a lovely touch of pink, however it sits in the brown shades of the paint chart, so it doesn t feel too sugary; it has an earthy, mushroom feel and the brown pigments keep it appropriate for a drawing room. The warmth of the colour is fantastic with gilt, which I ve used a lot in here. The room feels very warm and it s wonderful in winter it s a beautiful cosy room at Christmas. The warmth of the pinky tones give the colour a soft edge I think a beige or brown can look a little flat. Smoked Trout provides a good blank canvas to layer up a warm palette of pinks and reds, and keeps everything feeling vintage and country, which is what I aim for. Although the fabrics used here are all in pale, soft colours, I have added some raspberry red and some black, as in the cushions, for a bit of depth as I feel you do need some blocks of colour. I ve also got a lovely molecoloured chair (unseen) which is gorgeous with these coffee colours. I use seagrass throughout the house as I find it works with all our fabrics. It keeps the room feeling very natural. emma sims hilditch Founder, Sims Hilditch With a background in set design, Sims Hilditch combined a love of design and architecture with a passion for art and entertaining. Founded in 1995, Sims Hilditch The feeling I wanted to achieve in this room was calm and restful. I wanted to use warm colours which were inviting. The colours are also complementary to the Bath stone outside, which has a very warm tone to it. I think there can be a feeling that using neutrals or beige can be off-putting, but perhaps there are better ways of describing the colour which are more appealing: latte, coffee, almond, raffia... all these tones can be layered to create something rich and interesting. In this apartment we had a very vibrant patterned, green wallpaper in the hallway, as I think you can have a bit more fun in a hallway, but coming into a room for relaxing, you want the mood to be more restful, which is a priority. I used a grass cloth on the walls, which not only has a warm tone, but the weight and texture makes any room feel cosy. I then used fabrics in slightly different tones for the curtains and upholstery. You don t want to get too matchy-matchy you need layers of colours to provide depth. The sofa is in a gorgeous soft chenille from Pierre Frey called Zag. This has a subtle zigzag pattern so it s really textural. The curtains are also from Pierre Frey; Atmosphere, in A La Creme. It features lovely spiral embroidery which catches the light wonderfully. I have ensured there is a lot of light in this room. It wasn t very big so although I wanted it to feel warm and cosy, I didn t want to close it down. The Perspex specialises in integrating architecture and interior design with traditional craftsmanship, elegant lighting and bespoke furniture design. The gentle background scheme in this drawing room allows beautiful textures and brighter colours to become focal points. curtain poles, mirror and glass coffee tables, and light oak floor all enhance the feeling of light and space without making the room cold. Of course, you do need some colour, and I wanted to use the fabulous William Yeoward glass lamps in this beautiful pink colour. There is often a thread which starts a design, and you can then pull this through into different elements in the scheme. We found the pink cushions and then the rug, also from William Yeoward, which had a fun multi coloured spot, in pink and green. We picked out the green in the lampshades. Just a few elements of colour really enrich the room so the result is cohesive, sophisticated and, most importantly, restful. 76 The English Home The English Home 77
