FREE Book your FREE home design visit; our expert designer will visit you at the convenience and comfort of your own home at a time that suits you. Brief your designer about the look you are trying to achieve along with the functional features you would like to integrate in your new design; your designer will incorporate your ideas whilst giving you expert advice and design your dream kitchen in stunning 3d cad visuals for your approval. We will now produce a proposal incorporating details of your specification and total cost. Upon accepting our proposal, one of our experienced surveyors will conduct a pre-installation survey alongside your project manager to check the specification and measurements of your new kitchen. By identifying and resolving any potential issues before installation, we will ensure your project runs as smoothly as possible without any hiccups. On completion of the survey we will produce a detailed report which includes a full parts list and a fitters report. We deliver and install your new kitchen around your timescale, we usually require a four week lead time from Technical Survey however we can speed this up if required. Installation is generally 5-7 days depending on what the project involves. Your dedicated project manager will update you along the way right through to completion. 7 PLANNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN TOP TIPS TO FOLLOW TO ACCURATELY MEASURE YOUR KITCHEN SPACE 1. Measure in millimetres (mm) to provide the most accurate measurements 2. Measure the walls from floor to ceiling 3. Measure the walls from corner to corner 4. Measure doors and openings from the top of the opening to the ceiling 5. Pick one corner as your starting point. (A) Measure the wall from the corner to the window edge (B) Measure the window width from edge to edge (C) Measure the wall from the window edge to the far corner Repeat this process as you work round the room noting all individual measurements as you go. Once you have completed the measurements take an overall measurement of each wall from corner to corner. This measure should equate to the individual measurements taken. Note the height of the windows and doors as you work along the walls Remember to include the height of the room from the floor to the ceiling Note all existing services, sockets and lights on the plan *Each small square represents 100mm. 10 KITCHEN LAYOUTS The shape and size of your room directly influences the kitchen layout you will decide on. It s worth exploring the range of kitchen layouts that may suit your needs and lifestyle better than others. There are five common kitchen layouts, which are listed below.

11 ISLAND An effective island layout typically involves more space than is available in a small kitchen. This plan which is more suited to medium sized kitchens may still give you some ideas that you can incorporate into your final kitchen design. 11

12 L-SHAPE A practical and popular layout that offers good storage and ergonomics, and provides a very effective working triangle. It works efficiently in small kitchens and in a larger room allows space for a dining table, so it is good for families and entertaining. GALLEY A galley kitchen is a single line of cabinets. As the name suggests, a galley is normally long and narrow. With careful planning and resourcefulness, however, the design can function as an efficient and streamlined kitchen. It s best to separate the cooking and sink area with a run of work surface. This layout still gives plenty of storage space and it can suit busy cooks who like everything close to hand. Dining need not be compromised - if space allows do not take the units all the way to the end of the room, put a small table and chairs there instead. If possible, include either glazed wall units or open shelving to prevent the room from feeling hemmed in. It will create a sense of space and open up the design. 12

13 U-SHAPE An effective U-Shaped layout typically involves more space than is available in a small kitchen. This plan which is more suited to medium sized kitchens may still give you some ideas that you can incorporate into your final kitchen design. DOUBLE GALLEY With cabinets along two walls, a double galley kitchen offers more storage space and the opportunity to introduce more design features, such as staggered depths and cabinet heights. This can provide great options for for a variety of cooking activities and storage, as well as preventing your kitchen rom feelng like a corridor. A tall, floor-toceiling larder holds a surprising amount of provisions and is best located at the end of a run of base units so that when the door is opened it won t obstruct or restrict movement around the rest of the kitchen. Lighting can make or break both the aesthetics and functions of a double galley kitchen. Plinth lighting and illuminated, glazed wall cabinets will open up the scheme and create a spacious feel. 13

14 DESIGNING A SMALL KITCHEN A COMPACT KITCHEN CAN BE STYLISH & PRACTICAL WITH CAREFUL PLANNING Many of us do not have the luxury of a large kitchen, often because our properties dictate the size of the room. Whilst in recent years there has been an influx of appliances and gadgetry such as teppan yakis and cavernous wine coolers, many homeowners have had to design a small kitchen, to fit inside the architecture of older homes. In some cases it may be possible to make structural changes to achieve the space you want, but if you do have to stick with what you ve got, there are plenty of things you can do to make a difference.

15 LOVE YOUR LAYOUT U-shape designs work particularly well in small kitchens, as they are ergonomic and allow for plenty of hidden storage and potentially a seating area, too. Consider a split-level surface to accommodate a dedicated dining space. Kitchen storage can be maximised with tall wall units, which accentuate the height of the room, while the U-shape enables you to achieve the perfect working triangle with cooker, sink and fridge on opposite sides of the U. L-shaped layouts can also work in small spaces, with the appliances, such as the oven and hob, on one side of the worktop and a sink on the other. If space allows, you can extend the worktop on one side to create a handy breakfast bar - just add bar stools. Single and double galley kitchens are also popular in long, narrow rooms, especially those with a door or window at the end. In a double galley, place the sink on the opposite side to the oven and hob, so you can simply turn from one to the other while in a single galley, aim to have a good length of workspace between the two. Ideally you should have the oven and hob at one end of the worktop and the sink at the other. 15

16 DEFINE SPACES Function is one of the most important considerations when planning any kitchen and in a compact room it s more crucial than ever that the entire space works in the most efficient way. Try to define different zones for preparation, cooking and washing but if you can t, then you may need to double up some activities. The preparation area for instance could also be the place for informal dining while a glass or ceramic hob can double as a workspace when not in use. Think carefully about your choice of worktops to ensure that the material is suitable for a range of applications. MAKE A LIST Before you start, walk around your current kitchen and write down how you use it now and how you would like to use the new one. Where would you like everything to be? What works and what doesn t? Consider the appliances, the sink area, the storage and the amount of workspace. Ask yourself how many people will be using the space, what type of cooking you enjoy and how you would like things to be different. These are all good starting points and can help pin down your priorities. 16

17 CLEAR THE CLUTTER Lack of worktop space is often a problem in a small kitchen but by keeping it clutter-free and only placing essential and regularly used items on the surface, you will maximise the working area. Consider including an inset birch end grain timber block as an additional preparation space - this will also avoid having chopping boards scattered across the worktop. Flush-fit sinks and hobs will enhance the feeling of space as they make the room appear larger due to their seamless finish. A sink with a glass cover can even double as an extra prep space when not in use. KEEP IT SIMPLE Less is definitely more so don t try to cram too much in. Have a really good sort out and only keep what you regularly use or absolutely love. Be realistic about what your kitchen can accommodate and stick to it. Keeping the design consistent in terms of decor, furniture and flooring will also help create the illusion of space. High gloss handless cabinets, pale flooring and a neutral colour scheme will all help to make the room appear lighter, brighter and bigger. 17

18 SPACE-SAVING STORAGE Once you ve trimmed down your kitchen kit, it s time to find a home for it. Resist the temptation to pack as many units as possible into the room, as this will make the kitchen feel cramped and closed in. Instead, use clever storage solutions such aslarders and magic corners to make the most of every inch of cupboard space. Open shelving looks great in an alcove as an alternative to a wall unit and is the perfect spot for cookery books and your favourite pieces. Use splashbacks for hanging rails and tambour shutters to conceal small appliances. ILLUMINATING IDEAS Good lighting can make all the difference to a small kitchen, helping to illuminate dark spots while providing task lighting for worktops and cooking areas and a soft cosy glow for everyday use. Use feature lights to highlight open shelving or the interior of glass-fronted cabinets and plinth lights to make the floor space appear larger then team with light-reflecting materials such as high gloss units, glass splashbacks, polished porcelain flooring and stainless steel appliances. 18

19 CHOOSE APPLIANCES CAREFULLY There are many options for smaller kitchens when it comes to appliances. If you want a freestanding cooker, there are plenty of 50cm, 55cm and 60cm widths to choose from. Builtin ovens can be installed in a vertical column to save space while many manufacturers offer a compact range of ovens, microwaves, steam ovens, coffee machines and wine coolers in a 45cm height instead of the usual 60cm, enabling you to mix and match to suit your needs. Slimline dishwashers are ideal space-savers offering a decent nine place setting while hobs come in a linear design or domino configuration to save valuable worktop space. You may want to consider an undercounter larder fridge for the kitchen and a separate chest freezer for the garage, too. 19

20 BUILDING A KITCHEN EXTENSION CREATE EXTRA SPACE AND ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME AT THE SAME TIME Whilst there are plenty of ways in which you can make the most of a small kitchen, you may be considering building a kitchen extension to get the space you want. Opening up your new kitchen not only provides more options for cooking but it can also provide an area for dining, relaxing, working and entertaining. Some extensions will have doors opening onto the garden, creating that garden room feel which brings the outside in, while others simply create a more flexible space for the whole family to enjoy. Before you start submitting plans and choosing your cabinetry, take time to consider all the elements carefully, as any mistakes can be costly later on.

21 KNOCKING THROUGH There are a number of options to explore for achieving more kitchen space before building a kitchen extension. The simplest and cheapest is to knock down a stud partition wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a kitchen-diner or kitchen-living room. Many people prefer this open style ADDING ON If your property is a traditional Victorian terrace, filling in the side return can transform what was an awkward galley into a wider, brighter kitchen that could be large enough EXTENDING OUT If there is sufficient room on your plot and you have the budget, adding a large extension onto your home is possibly the best way to create sufficient space to plan your perfect kitchen. Adding features such as bi-fold doors leading onto the garden is a wonderful way to bring the outside in and in the summer, it will provide the perfect of living to having a separate formal dining room and you ll need to consult a structural engineer to ensure that the dividing wall isn t load bearing. These are all key questions, as your new space must deliver in terms of what is demanded from it. Don t just look at what s required right now, but also think PRACTICAL POINTS Start by setting yourself a realistic budget and make sure you have a contingency fund in place for any unforeseen costs. If you are knocking through or adding on, look at the services available within the room - these are the electrics, plumbing, drains and gas connections. If they need to be about future-proofing the interior and consider the changing dynamics of your family and whether your home life will be dramatically different in five or ten years time.
