By using a waste product from another industry we are collaborating to reduce waste, improve recycling and contribute to a better environment. By adding cocoa shells to the traditional Marmoleum ingredients we have created an innovation in construction aesthetics. The result is a new and exciting surface texture that is both natural looking and contemporary in feel. The inclusion of cocoa adds a rich look that is fresh, modern and yet uniquely Marmoleum. 5 Linseed oil Wood flour Rosin Limestone Pigments Jute Cocoa bean shells Linseed oil, the most important raw material used to make linoleum, is obtained by pressing the seeds of the flax plant. In the past linseed oil was used as cooking oil, as well as for lighting. We add to this Tall oil, a recycled post-industrial by-product of the paper industry, which optimises the oxidation process in the production of linoleum. Wood flour is used to bind the pigments and to ensure colourfastness. This is the reason why Marmoleum keeps its beautiful, vibrant colours throughout its lifespan. Another reason for using wood flour is that it helps to give an especially smooth surface. We have chosen not to use tropical hardwood flour but wood flour made from timber grown in controlled European forests, where every tree felled is replaced. Rosin, the key agent in the first steps of producing Marmoleum, is tapped from pine trees, without affecting growth. Together with linseed oil, rosin gives Marmoleum its strength and flexibility. Limestone is found all over the world in enormous quantities. Very finely ground, it is a valuable ingredient of Marmoleum. The most beautiful colours are created by using ecologically responsible pigments that do not contain heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. From the wide variety of materials available for making the floor covering s backing we prefer natural jute. The yarn for the webbing is spun from jute grown in India and Bangladesh. Cocoa shells are a waste product from chocolate production. Forbo uses cocoa shells from a traceable source that produces under ecological and socially responsible programmes.
