And, herein lies the challenge; to create spaces that allow the hospital staff to perform at its best, while allowing the children to just be kids.

That s why the new expansion was designed to provide the very best care in an atmosphere that would keep things as normal as possible for the young patients. And, herein lies the challenge; to create spaces that allow the hospital staff to perform at its best, while allowing the children to just be kids. The Design Plan Through benchmarking the best attributes of other children s hospitals around the U.S. and combining that with direct feedback and ideas from employees, physicians, patient families and the children themselves, the expansion at the Joe DiMaggio Children s Hospital became a reality. From the colorful wayfinding elements to the vibrant graphics of the themed floors of sports, arts, games and dreams, the Power of Play is at the heart of the facility s design. The Power of Play is important in any child s life, and even more so for one who is ill. The design provides comfort and inspiration for the children and their families. It provides patients and visitors a positive distraction from the medical equipment and procedures, and can also help alleviate pain. 3

After a thoughtful review period, the hospital determined that National Office Furniture offered the best products to furnish the resource centers, reception areas, lounges and the spaces outside the procedure and treatment rooms. Hospital personnel were drawn to the quality, appeal and practical nature of National s seating. They chose Eloquence, Swift and Reno and wrapped them in vibrant, durable fabrics to complement the fun-loving, relaxed atmosphere they strive to maintain. With Swift stretched along hallways, Reno in resource areas, and Eloquence welcoming visitors and families to take a seat, the hospital s main concerns were safety and durability which National delivered via plush, sturdy upholstered and wood seating. What s more, all the National products in the expansion are level 2 and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold certified which contributes to healthier indoor air. The furniture is very versatile, free flowing. We have already rearranged the furniture depending on the function of the room and are very pleased with the durability, said Chantal Leconte, Associate Administrator. 7 The Results The results are apparent by the pictures. From the vibrant crayon images to the oversized surf boards, the design team, patient families, employees and especially the children hit a home run for the Joe DiMaggio Children s Hospital. We are very happy with the way things came out. The furniture creates a child-friendly environment and we feel great about the design and selections we made, added Leconte.
