Dean Winesett says that when he drew up plans for this residence on Hilton Head Island, SC, one of his first decisions was to use brick. I ve seen a lot of wood on Hilton Head over the years. With this project, I wanted to show that just about anything made with wood can be made better with brick, says Winesett. Just like the background music in a film, the grounds surrounding a building should complement the structure without overpowering it. Outdoor spaces reflect the personality of those residing within. The ease of brick construction, combined with brick s ability to blend well in any environment, allows builders and homeowners to embellish yards, gardens and entrances that express their unique character and personality. Even the simplest brick design can transform a tract of land into a haven of relaxation and hospitality for all who visit. Because it s made of clay a natural substance its many colors, shapes and textures complement the natural beauty of the outdoors. 1b C Curved brick, topped with custom cap brick, form planters that welcome visitors at the home s entrance. PARADISE BY THE SEA CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The grounds surrounding the home, which overlook the Atlantic Ocean, are full of exquisite brick detailing, from the pool/hot tub area and garden and sea walls to the brick planters hugging the front entrance. All brick used which total about 80 different types were handmade, modular brick, specially sized and shaped to meet the project s many design specifications. Brick columns extend from the hot tub area to support the veranda above, and a trellis motif repeats itself throughout the landscaping. Winesett says the versatility of brick allows these details to create a natural, growing-out-of-the-ground look you can t get with wood or stucco. They are real artwork a feather in the cap of any mason who can pull them off. T To avoid snags on bathing suits, the two courses surrounding the pool and hot tub were glazed. A Herringbone Pattern on the pool deck adds geometric variety to the home s overall traditional design. Adding brick to any outdoor project is an easy way to add market value and visual appeal to landscaping projects. SPECIFICATIONS Mortarless brick paving should conform to the grade as shown on plans. The subgrade (earth) should be well compacted with an all-organic material, and soft soil should be removed and replaced with an approved soil. The paving brick should conform to ASTM C902, Class SX. Color and dimensions should be approved from sample. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Architect Roy Harrover has been fascinated with the Mississippi River for years. Mud Island Park, which overlooks the river and downtown Memphis, is the culmination of over a decade of research and construction. The park contains a scale model of the Mississippi River that stretches for five city blocks, and bronze markers denote areas 5a 5b of historical interest. Half a million modular brick pavers were used to surround the river model and pave the walkways and bridges. Brick borders provide color contrast and scale to the river model, says Harrover.
