2 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWEST COURSE SYLLABUS LANDSCAPE GARDENING HALT 1095 Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge s and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Learn to plan and care for your landscaping project, and to give your garden the special attention required in the Gulf Coast area. GOALS: To help the student personalize the wealth of gardening information including: Students will learn basic landscape design Students will learn about soils and fertilizer Students will learn about bed preparation and planting Student will learn about shrubs, vines, groundcover and native plants LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will be able to design a landscaping project. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: List the 5 principle of Landscaping, and describe the outdoor room concept Analyze soils and fertilizers Describe how to properly install plants Describe how to choose the right tree and the right place for planting a tree Describe the characteristics of various types of shrubs Describe the characteristics of various types of vines and select carefree alternatives to high maintenance lawns. Describe techniques for dry-scaping and rockscape with native plants and Xeriscaping Design an individual landscape project PREREQUISITE: None REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: None 2
3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 16-hour instructor guided course. Students will participate in class assignments and discussions. ATTENDANCE: To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Complete the course lab, demonstrating 80% mastery of course concepts or equivalent skills demonstration to instructor. OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION: Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION: Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION: Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. SPEAKER FORUM: At the discretion of the instructor, speakers may be invited to address the class on pertinent topics. CELL PHONES AND PAGERS: Cell phones and pagers can be disruptive during class. 5 Landscape Gardening 1 Content Sheet Basic Landscape Design Learn the 5 principle of Landscaping, and discover the outdoor room concept. Soils and Fertilizers How to turn your hard, clay gumbo into a rich, workable soil, and learn why we don t really feed our plants (they make their own food!). Bring in a sample of your own garden soil for a ph test, and determine its structure by doing a squeeze test. Bed Preparation and Planting How to correctly prepare your soil for planting, and how to properly install plants to insure survival. Trees How to choose just the right tree for the right place, by learning mature heights, growth rates and habits, and any strengths and weaknesses as far as insects/diseases are concerned. Shrubs The Characteristics and selection of evergreen, deciduous, flowering, and ornamental shrubs, the backbones of our planting. Vines and Groundcovers Select fast growing vines to bring vertical dimension to a sometimes flat landscape, and choose carefree alternatives to high maintenance lawns. Native Plants and Xeriscaping Tired of spending all your spare time and money watering chronically thirsty plants? Discover dry-scaping, along with the many plants which take care of themselves once established. Then see what a colorful addition a rockscape can be to your yard! Landscape Slide Presentation Photographic slide presentation of beautifully landscaped homes, with emphasis on how each relates to the principles of landscape design. Student Evaluation Students will design a personal landscape plan using techniques presented in class. 5
